Babies Latching On

It makes me nervous when I hear people tell me, or read on here, that some babies don't latch on to the br___t. Can anyone explain why this happens? Is this common? This is really upsetting to me because I have always wanted to br___tfeed and the prospect that it may not happen makes me worry.

Emily, my daughter didn't latch on very well, but I still nursed her. They have these devices called "nipple shields" It helps baby to latch on so that nursing is still possible..Worked for my girl until I got MAst_tis!!

I have to use a shield too. They didn't want me to because it's supposed to decrease your milk supply. I haven't seen an issue. The past few days I've been getting him to latch on but sometimes we both get so frustrated. My goal was to nurse for 6 weeks (he's 5 now) so I'm happy. Don't stress about it until you are in the situation. I read somewhere that there used to be a 99% success rate in b___st feeding in the old days (b4 formula). A lot of people give up prior to giving it a chance. It's a lot harder than I thought it'd be (even with the shield) but if it's what you really want you can do it!

I think a lot of those latch "problems" are inexperience on the part of and bad advice to the new mom. Mothering doesn't come naturally to most people. Especially here in the US where I know so many women who have never cared for a baby or small child until they have had their own. Successful b___stfeeding takes patience and acceptance - patience in learning how to nurse and acceptance of your new life circ_mstances. A new mom is not in control anymore and you save yourself a lot of frustration if you just accept and roll with the punches. I hope this makes sense because I'm really tired ;)
