Beer To Help Milk Supply

I have heard that beer can help milk supply while nursing. I'm not concerned about drinking a beer here and there, but I HATE alcohol!! Beer tastes NASTY to me, so.... what I'm wondering is.... has anyone else tried this, and has it worked? And is there any beer in particular that you're supposed to drink? Or will any do? I don't want to force one down, then find out it was the "wrong kind" or something! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Tara

I don't know if it works, but I began to drink nonalcoholic beer when I was pregnant and still do now. I don't drink it everyday and haven't noticed any difference in my milk supply when I do. I guess alcohol can inhibit supply. I found this on kellymom.com: http://www.kellymom.com/herbal/milksupply/herbal-rem_f.html#hops (there is a dash between herbal and rem)

I don't know if this is true but I asked my lactation consultant and she said it is not beer but malt liquor drinks. She said most wine coolers will do the trick.

I don't know if this works or not so i asked ny mom, she said it can work, she thinks it make you relax and can help with let down and there is yeast in beer which can help with your milk supplu. She said when i was born the nurses gave her beer in the hospital!!! She said the darker the beer the better!

i've read that alcohol can actually hurt your milk supply, though one beer isn't a big deal. more fluids, like water juice etc. will help in general with your supply..

Thanks Shannon- I've heard all that. That's not working either. I'm currently taking a whole bunch of things to TRY and help, but nothing seems to. I'm taking Nettle, Alfalfa, and fenugreek- 3 capsules, 3X a day, I'm taking domperidone- 40mg 4X a day, I'm eating 2 packets of oatmeal 2x a day, drinking about 70 oz of water a day, and I just read that gatorade is good too, so I try to get a bottle of that in there too to break up the water. I've also heard chocolate... I have that covered! I've heard sesemea (sp?) seeds work, but can't find those in bulk. I'd put them on my cereal if I could find them! LOL Nothing seems to be working. I'm getting very frustrated with it though! I know pumping is the key- and nursing often, but with a 2 1/2 year old, and no one else to help me, that gets pretty difficult! So... one more thing I wanted to try was the beer. Thought I'd give it a shot. Tried it last night, and didn't notice a thing. I think I read it was from the barley? Same as oatmeal that's supposed to help. I don't know. Wish there was a guaranteed thing to help that's for sure! This is getting old- doing all this stuff all the time!! Thanks for your replies. Tara

I think it is supposed to be the hops in beer that increases milk supply. Tara, do you think that you may have to drink a beer a day for like a week or something to notice an increase in your supply? Like it may take more than one? I'm not sure on that or anything, it is just a thought. Here is some useful info from kellymom: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/low-supply.html (there is only a dash between low and supply.)

It's actually the yeast in the beer that helps increase milk production. You can buy Brewers Yeast tablets from your health shop and take 1 3 times a day. Leaves the alcohol out of it.

I must say everytime I drink a couple beers over the weekend, I always leak on the bed sheets, I have heard it helps as well!!

My mom said that dark beer and wine help your milk supply. I hate beer as well, so every so often I have a gla__s of wine--it relaxes me, and I think that's what helps my supply...not really sure why it works though. EXESSIVE alcohol can inhibit letdown though... If you don't want to drink alcohol, try taking capsules of Blessed Thissle and Fenugreet (I think that's the name of it) or you could try Organic Mothers Milk tea. So, I wouldn't try to force a beer down until I try the other stuff if I were you. :-)

My son's doctor told me today to start drinking A (one a day) beer to help with my milk supply. I don't care for beer either, but I think I'm going to try it.
