Hi nm and livsmommy - I have a question. Do either of you smoke in front of the kids? I am not going to judge, and it is possible you don't want to say after all of the bashing that has occured. I am just wondering if you do, and if they ask you questions about it. My husband will not mind if our son smokes weed as a teen. I will mind if it makes him lazy and his grades suffer. If he can handle his responsibilites while smoking once in a while, I don't think it is such a big deal. Will you smoke with them when they are older? Again, no judging on my side, just an honest curiosity.

I agree with Cali-Girl. ES, livsmom, Julie, and NM and any others that I missed out on. Don't be soooo rude!!! Yes, it is a heated topic, one which none of us truly have the answer to, but it does not merit explicit and vulgar name calling! To those homeschoolers who have all those kids, NM, and whoever else, HOW do you have so much TIME to sit on the internet and shout at someone else's ignorance? Shouldn't you be schooling your kids?
To Angel, whom this question originally centered around. It is true, there is a lack of research in this area. Whoever said that it Marijuana kills brain cells, however, is inaccurate. The only three psychoactive substances proven to kill brain cells are Alcohol, PCP, and methamphetamines. It is hard to know about the safety of marijuana use in general because of the political context of this country and, as cali-girl said, the pharmaceutical greed.
What does appear to be known is that THC does pa__s into the b___stmilk. Since it stores in fat and b___stmilk draws on fat stores, the more you smoke, the more will build up in your fat stores. Of course, whether or not this is harmful, who knows. I tend to think that anything in excess can be harmful, not matter what it is. As far as a scientific answer, well I wish there was one too! Good luck to you and the rest of you CALM down and don't be so judgemental. Everyone reacts differently to substance and uses them for different reasons. Just because one person does it multiple times a day and will do anything to get high, doesn't mean that another person has this problem. Many smokers of marijuana use it to calm their nerves or relax stiff muscles. It has a number of medicinal properties. In fact, many users don't use it to get "HIGH". They don't smoke enough of it to be "HIGH". Doctors prescribe lots of drugs that in small amounts relieve pain, like vicodin, for example, which don't get you "HIGH" unless you take a whole bunch for the purposes of that effect. I think that some of you "haters" like ES don't have any reference by which to judge these other women as irresponsible. Many people can use marijuana and be perfectly responsible. I am not advocating it one way or the other, I just think that you should try to understand their circ_mstances rather than a__signing them a blanket label. Each individual is the only one who truly knows how what they do affects them and will have to dig deep inside of themselves to deteremine if they are doing what is right or being irresponsible.

Thanx for the back up. I don't think people nationwide understand what a huge part of our culture it is here in California. That's why we are more tollerant.

Well, it seems the subject had changed off of marijuana but i have to say it is so great to read about so many people being open about mj. i am currently torn on what to do. i stopped b___stfeeding at two weeks, my baby is now 7 weeks and i really regret that i stopped. i didnt realize there were so many nutrients in b___st milk that cant be found in any other species or duplicated. my baby has reflux and is colicky and i want to do whatever i can to help it get better. i wasn't sure because i like to smoke when i need to relax and i didnt know what to do. i am a little more open to what i may do now. plus it is just really nice to hear about other moms who like to smoke to relax. i felt like i was doing some huge sin and i feel better now. to those of you who are so against it. open up your mind. anyone who wants to give adivce about restarting b___stfeeding please do, i am still unsure what to do but i do really regret stopping. i feel like i have done wrong with my baby.

There should still be some milk let so if you start pumping or just let your baby nurse you should be able to fire those babies up again. If not it's not the worst thing in the world. Your baby will still be fat and healthy.

Wow, lots of tempers flying in here. I have Thank G-D 2 healthy children. I did not smoke while pregnant, I am currently nursing my 14 month old. I do occasionally smoke after they go to bed, 1-2 hits. I asked my obgyn if one were to smoke this amount would it hurt the baby.she did not even flinch. No, not any more then making him eat more or sleepy.(and 90% of the population gives their children Benadril, which has the same if not worse affects) she did warn me against drinking too much caffeine, allowing myself to get stressed and not eating or sleeping enough. ps.<ES: babies who are left without the proper affection can become homicidal maniacs, (note china) lets try not to jump the gun here and have the children of good loving mothers shipped off to orphanages because their mothers smoke a little pot? We have bigger fish to fry! like a stressed out parent or a home where intolerance and hurtful wishes are expressed and shared by the female role model. It sounds like you have some healing to do, weird that you would wish such terrible things to another woman and children.

Namby> thank you that was very informative. Unfortunately you answered a different question. The original question posed was concerning small amounts of marijuana used while the mother is still nursing, and whether the amounts that enter her milk have a negative effect on the baby, not pregnancy. But thank you for your information and the time you took to site all the stipulated facts.

The post did say it was advised to stay away because the b___stmilk has up to 8x the levels of THC then the mothers bloodstream. Points 15-18 cover this.

In my opinion if you smoke cigarretts, mar., use alcohol and subject your children to it, it is child abuse period!!!! You know these things are harmful to you they are even worse for your newborns and children. You should be ashamed of yourself for even thinking it is okay. If you love your child stop now or bottle feed it would be better for your baby.

well obviously you are no doctor kc. any pediatrician will advise b___stfeeding whether you are smoking cigs, weed, or drinking, or whatever over bottle feeding. and once again, no marijuana is not harmful...

I think it is very selfish for a mother to put her own drug addiction before her child's health. Your child should come first not your cigarrettes, joint or booze. Enough said this is my point and I am sticking to it. Your children do what they see and are most impressionable in their first three years of life. If you want your children to pick up these habits continue to expose them to your habbits.

I smoke mj while I was pregnant with my first son. I had a friend who had smoked while pregnant with her daughters and they seemed perfectly fine. Now at three, my son does have behavioral problems, a short attention span, and has been slow to talk. Was it the mj? who knows. But I ask myself that question alot. While pregnant the second time, I wouldn't even risk it. The not knowing is the worst part.

There are tons of kids who have behavior problems with non smoking parents. And most psycologists solution to adhd IS a powerful drug called ritalin. What say you?
