Breathing Problems With C Section Baby

Hi. I had a long labor and delivery with my first baby in '03. One month ago I had an elective c-section. I did not have a very good recovery and my baby boy did not do well at all with the c-section delivery. I do not recall them telling me how bad the breathing problems could be for a c-section baby. Right after he was born they said he was having a really hard time breathing and then they whisked him away to the NICU! I found out later that he didn't like being born 12 days early even though he was 7 pounds and that respiratory problems are fairly common for c/s babies. Why didn't they tell me how sick the babies can get from this type of delivery. He is home now, but after 3 weeks in NICU and step-down.

yes it can be common because unlike a baby delivered v____ally the fluids are not forced out of the baby. when a mother pushes the baby out of the birth ca___l fluid is pushed out of the babys mouth and nose. however, when the baby is delivered via c-s that does not happen and usually the amniotic fluid is still intact meaning a gush of fluid before delivery. so it is more common but i delivered my boys c-s and they both did fine breathing so it may just be a freak thing and the next would be fine?

Well that is what I thought as well. My first baby was a lot more vigorous with the v____al birth even though both of us were tired. My friends all said have a c-section even though none of them had ever had one, so I did, I am not going to have another one. I did not like my v____al birth, but this one is taking a lot longer to feel better and my baby got soooooo sick. I just think mothers out there should know that about c-section babies. When I got talked into my c-section they said sometimes a baby may breathe more rapdily for a couple of hours, NO ONE said it would be REAL respiratory distress. I also don't recommend them taking your baby so early, he didn't like that either! Thanks for the answer Amy P.

why did you have an elective c? also, 12 days is early, my first c i was 42.5 weeks (my baby did not want to come out) after being induced they took him c cause he would not fit through my hips. when i got pg with #2 i was scheduled for the c and i made them wait. i was due may 3rd and they took him on april 29. i made them wait until i was well over 38 weeks. luckily my babies had no problems and i am very sorry yours did i hope all is well now...and if you get pg again can you VBAC?

Hi. I had a scheduled c-section for the stupidest reasons! I had a long labor with my first baby and a lot of people convinced me a c-section is easier...problem is they NEVER had one! I feel guilty, I thought it would be less painful and it wasn't and my baby was hurt because of my decision. I found a doctor who thinks a woman should be able to choose

I hit the wrong b___ton...to continue, there were two dates available, 5 days before my due date and 12. Of course, like any 9 month pregnant woman, I had had enough and chose the earlier date. It was all a big mistake anyway, my pain was worse after my c-section and still is and of course, my baby did not tolerate the c-section very well with the RDS. My doctor thought he was mature enough but I guess some babies need every single day they are supposed to have. I am DEFINATELY going VBAC next time, no matter what anyone says.

Shannon, don't beat yourself up! After a long labor many of us thought a c-section was going to be great! You had a lot of people who meant well, but didn't know what the advice they gave you actually entailed. No one wants to take a baby too soon and that is the problem with some elective c/s's. No one really knows which baby needs all the baking time and which one doesn't. L/S ratios will determine with a fair degree of accuracy if a baby's lungs are ready, but wouldn't be offered for a non-medical c/s unless asked for. Don't feel guilty anymore, we all make mistakes and you truly thought you were going to have a better birth. It is silly and sometimes dangerous the myths we women will perpetuate regarding childbirth. There just is no easy way. How is baby today? How are you today? Are you feeling a little less sore and is your incision looking nice and dry and not red or hot? Keep us posted.

djh is so right shannon dont beat yourself up, you know it happened and it is over regardless he is here and things will be okay now..my thought is it really dosent matter how they get here it is just a miracle they do!!!! good luck

thanks Amy and djh! I can't talk about this guilt to others because they all say "well you asked for a c-section so take the consequences" I didn't mean for this to happen and I am in so much pain at my scar and inside. When does it stop being so sore? With my first v____al I was sore, but I had energy and could go shopping and hold my baby, now if my oldest son climbs on me (he's 2 1/2) I wince and kind of push him off. I hate this, I wish I had just had my new baby the way I had my first one. Oh well, if I have another one it will not be by c-section. The baby is okay, he is a little congested and coughs alot, but the nurse said some babies with RDS have lingering junk for awhile and I just have to keep up on his temp and how he is acting and nursing. Thanks ladies, you are great.

I had the same experience with my first baby. I had a c-section and she spent 10 days in NICU. She had breathing problems and a heart murmur. I had her 4 weeks early because of hypertension. When I was pregnant with my second baby, I was really dreading having another one in NICU. I had her at 37 weeks 3 days (the longest the doctor would wait with my blood pressure) and I was suprised when she didn't have any breathing trouble. They wrapped her in blankets in the operating room and stuck her in my husband's arms. So it doesn't happen every time. It's really scary to see your baby hooked up to so many machines, but my oldest daughter is three and a half now and she's the healthiest kid I know, so don't worry that your son will be fragile for life (I worried about that with my daughter). You really can't blame yourself for the c-section. For all you know, you could have ended up with one anyhow, and an emergency c-section is rougher than a planned one (in my experience, anyhow). You'll start feeling better soon, I'm sure. Get some control panties to provide support to the incision, and take ibuprofen...I had my daughter Aug 17 and I'm completely recovered. It took about four weeks for it to really stop hurting.

Thanks, jbear, the panties work!!! I feel better with them on and it doesn't seem like my stomach muscles are as achy today. Wow, what good advice. I still think I am going to go VABAC with my next one...my v____al birth was long and hard, but I did it and it wouldn't be a first delivery that way. I just think this c-section stuff was WAY over-rated...I liked my v____al recovery much better.
