HI, try to get as close to your due date as possible. 40 weeks is just a rough science guess of full-term. Ask them to do an L/S ratio on you if it is scheduled more than 1-2 weeks before term. Definately don't let them take the baby sooner than a week early...some babies are born prematurely (or IMMATURELY) because of this practice of scheduling c-sections. Good luck.

The Dr wants to schedule my C the 13th or 14th of Nov I am due the 20th. I wanted it done on the 10th so my husband could be there he is working out of town and he gets no vacation time and his boss is really being a b___t about it saying he may not be there the 10th is a Thurs this is 3 days earlier than she wants I will be 38 wks and 4 days I have had a bunch of ultrasounds and they said the baby which is a little girl was 4lbs last week and they said everything looked great I am not keen on an amnio test I know that normal pregnancies are considered 2 wks early or late she said if I went into labor they wouldn't stop it but the thing is if that happened then they would have to do an emergency C and that would be dangerous for me and Abby

I see your dilemma. I had amnios and they really aren't that bad, if you can do a c-section these are nothing in comparison. If you do go into labor (which is always a risk...right?) you just get your bottom (and Abby's) to the hospital ASAP. Ruptures are very very rare and usually are after laboring for awhile. I had 4 c-sects in 4 years due to immature pelvis and I went into labor with each baby (two were preemies) and even though my scar was paper thin I didn't rupture so don't worry about the "emergency" part. I hope your husband's boss will relent, but if not, think of it this way, Abby will have more precious time in utero to develop her lungs, lay down some fat and mature a bit. Every day does matter in the womb and this sounds like it may be a beneficial trade-off for your little girl. Not so great for you if you have to do it without hubby, but Abby is priority one, right? Good luck and keep me posted. Deb

Katrena-This will be my 4th c-sect, in March. My 1st one was an unplanned c-due to pelvis shape. My 2nd, I was given my choice of 2 dates (one was 5days before due date and the other was 12 days before due date)-I went with the 12 days before one and all was fine. With my 3rd one, doctor told me to pick a date anywhere from 10-14 days before my due date, so picked one 10 days before-all fine again. With my 4th one, I am picking my date again and it is 12 days before due date.

Renae I don't know why they are being such a b___t about this my cousin had her kids one 9 wks early the other 5 wks early and both of them were fine their lungs were perfectly developed one of the teachers at my daughters school her grandbaby was early as well 5 wks and her lungs were fine too I have never had any problems with any of my kids and the development of their lungs I don't smoke and am not around anyone who does I take good care of myself and have had all healthy pregnancies and I am not a high risk patient I am 33 my son has a Growth Hormone Deficiency but that was due to his Pituitary Gland not developing and I have went to their specialist to have the baby checked out and they said everything was fine the sonogram specialist said the baby was 4lbs as of last month and she is very active the baby lol I just don't get what the deal is they wanted to take her on the 13th of Nov I asked that they do it on the 10th so my husband could be here and my kids wouldn't have to stay somehwere other than home for 4 days not too mention trying to find a way home from the hospital when I got released

I really don't know why they are giving you a hard time either. Have they said what an amnio 3 days earlier will detect? Why not just do an ultrasound instead-less evasive of a procedure and still gives them idea of how baby is developing. I don't think scheduling a c 10 days earlier is too early.

Female babies usually fare better with early births than boys, due to hormonal influences on lung development. It is not just a lung maturity issue...it is a neurological issue as well as a homeostatic issue. In other words, each individual baby has it's own time frame for when it's wiring is "finished" for things such as remembering to breathe, intestinal synchronicity, enough brown fat laid down to maintain body temp....hypothalamus maturity, etc. One baby may survive with little or no problems at 28 weeks, another can be considered "immature" at 40. Why gamble? The NICU is a nasty place to visit your baby especially lugging IV poles with you. There are also NICU ifections that can be picked up by your baby, imagine that, sick babies next to yours!!! Just some food for thought, no two babies are alike and I would never gamble with immaturity and SIDS risks for convenience. The amnio is a much more accurate measure of lung development than an ultra-sound as it stands for lecithin and surfactant levels-these are the substances in the lungs that keep them from collapsing and keep the alveoli inflated. Good luck!
