I had an emergency c-section with my first child, now I'm 31 weeks and will have a planned c-section at 38 weeks. I'm wondering how they differ from eachother - as far as recovery and pain and such. I hear planned ones are allot easier, and my dr. said I'll get a spinal this time instead of an epidural (which I wonder pain wise and feeling wise what is the difference?) he told me that with the spinal - the drug they use doesnt last very long and your back on your feet allot sooner. What was your experience with both?

My first was an emergency C and my next two were scheduled Cs. I did find that the scheduled ones were much easier to recover from!!! Not having a 24 hour, horrible labor first made life a lot easier afterward. I had an epi with my first, since I had been in labor. I don't remember feeling it at all. So I was nervous about the spinal, but it was just a little pinch and then done... also, I don't think they put a catheter in my back with the spinal like they did with the epi. I honestly can't remember when I gained feeling back after the emergency C... I was too exhausted, plus it was the middle of the night, so no-one was expecting me to walk around anyway. But, with Leah (2nd baby) she was born at 1:37 in the afternoon and was a NICU baby, so I had to get down there ASAP and as soon as I could feel my legs again they had me get out of bed, get cleaned up a little and get into a wheelchair to go down to see her. It was seriously only b/w 2-3 hours after the surgery! My third C was also scheduled, but I had to be under general anesthesia. The first day was not good (not even b/c of the surgery itself.... just because I don't react well to G.A.), but after that recovery wasn't too bad!

My 2nd was an emergency and I have 3 planned csections as well and I have to say my 2nd (the emergency) was the best section when it came to healing and pain. I had spinals with all so I would not know first hand the difference but my ex SIL had an epidural with her first section and says when they cut into her she felt it so they had to give her another one? im not sure if its true or not but thats what she claims. I have heard from many people that the 2nd csection is usually the best one when it comes to pain and healing. take care
