Incision Opening Fluid And Blood Pouring Out

Same thing happened to me, almost exactly, but it was 7 days after the surgery, and I had sutures.(Never had any staples on the outside). I went to the ER when it happened, as there was so much yellow fluid coming from the wound it seemed like I was peeing out of my abdomen!! The ER doctor thought so too, and I had a series of tests to see if my bladder was openand leaking on the inside(called a fissure). Luckily, it was not that, but a very bad infection. Apparently I had some sort of allergic reaction to the stiches(the kind that dissolve) and they had to re-open the incision. It had to be sc___ped out and packed with this weird packing material made of some kind of metal(?). A week later, it still wasn't healing, so they had to hook up this thing called a wound vac and it had a tube leading out into this canister, it drained all the infected fluid. It had to be hooked up 23 hours a day. Thank goodness it worked fast, and I only had to use it for a week. I was in and out of a special wound care clinic three times a week for almost 5 weeks. Not to scare the c___p out of you, honey(though I'm sure you're already pretty scared) but you need to get to see your doctorASAP, if not sooner. If I had known sooner that something wasn't right, it probably would never have gotten so bad. Good Luck!

well this is month 7 for me and on thursday i will be having surgery to fix the wound hopefully i was never tested to see if it was infection they said it was a blood clot...well and that i would be healed in 3 months well hhmmm its been 7 and still no answers i have been to several doctors ranging from obs plastic surgeon and even a oncologist that deal with wound repair from cancer the plastic surgeon wanted to do a tummy tuck my insurance wouldnt cover it then wanted to do a skin graft i didnt want another wound on my body never mind months down the road another hideous scar and now my ob wants to cut the wound out and sew it back up my insurance company wants me to pay more money so the dr has decided to do it in his office lovey eh? i just wish there was a way to warn women about this and i think that if this is so common then maybe they should use a drain to pull all the fluid out of our wound so that this doesnt happen they expect us to deal with this and care for a newborn well we all arent rich and can afford full time nannys i dont know about everyone else i cant....well wish me luck on thursday and hopefully i will be all done with this situation

Poor Lauren, I wish you well. I don't understand inurance companies, I really don't. I see a few patient choice c-sections and the companies argue but then pay for those totally unecessary surgeries and longer hospital stays for both mom AND baby, but they won't pay for NECESSARY surgeries for you to get some bit of healing from your (most likely) required cesarean...just b__ws my mind sometimes. Good luck on Thursday!

I had an emergency c section oct 26. I woke up covered in blood and pus about a week later. I developed an infection. Nurses came everyday for 5 weeks to pack it. 2 rounds of antibiotics and finally they said it healed and closed. I felt better for about 10 days, then woke up again covered in blood and pus. The doc said the infection is back. More nurses and more antibiotics. The pain is awful and I am so frustrated. Has anyone else had it open TWICE?? Can anybody tell me when it will be better? Or if something else is going on? Or why it is back? The docs treat me like its no big deal. but it is a big deal to have your life run by nurses for 7 weekls. Please help. thanks

See response from MAISY awhile back, she discusses MRSA infections. If you have that, most antibiotics WON'T WORK. Clindimycin and IV-Vancomycin work on it. Sometimes quadruple dose Septra works but none of the regular antibiotics ESPECIALLY the "cillins" this Staph is resistant to the -cillin meds like ampicillin, penicillin, methacillin (actually in the name) Insist they culture it like Maisy said and it takes 3 days for it to grow. Good luck

My daughter is now almost 13 months old and I still haven't healed completely. Anyone else out there, besides Lauren and myself, that have had this problem this long and have some advice? Anything would be appreciated.

Hi everybody! This site is very conforting. I thought I was the only one with this kind of problem. I just had a beautiful baby on August 2, 2006. My staples were removed on the 5th day and on 6th day I got up to check on the baby and my incision opened. It was blood everywhere. It didn't hurt but I was so scared. I saw my OB the next day and he told me to change gauze 3 times a day. I decided to go to a wound care center and the nurse told me that I needed to change the dressing only once a day. One doctor told me that it would take 3 weeks for me to heal and the nurse at the wound care told me it would take a couple of months. I don't know who to believe now. I just want to feel a little better and take carre of my baby. Does anyone know how long it really takes for this kind of thing to get better? The nurse says I will be ok and the good news is that is not infected.. I hope to hear from somebody soon!

Mine took 7 weeks to heal. There are a lot of posts on here about this. Let me try to find them....

Look at the "is it an infection" thread posted by Gracie. I just bumped it up for you.

My incision was oozing fluid too a week after my c-section. Now it looks like a blister. Does it happen to anybody? will the blister go away? TIA.

I had my 3rd daughter by C-section like my first and 2nd daughter, but the Doctor did cut me in the same scare tissue, instead he cut me hip-2-hip and told me we have more modern meds to help you heal faster, I did not want this doctor and my cervix was fully dilate and I had to delver now or both of us die. The day I left my icision came open and I was back in the ER with my other OB doctor and had to be packed for 9 months and stapled because the packing was not closing the incision fast enough and finally stiched. If anyone else has had a problem like this, please let me know. My youngest is 4 years old and the scar tissue still hurt to this day. I have seen 4 other doctors and they tell me nothing is wrong. any advise?

Hi! I have had 3 C-sections. And all went really well. The only incident I had was the 3rd section had a little pus. My doctor told me to put polysporin on it. I did and I healed fine. However, recently, I had a bowel resection done, and now have an incision down my tummy. I had my staples taken out, and the next day noticed a lump. It was not red, i had no fever, but it was really sore to touch. I went to bed thinking that "a lump was normal" and when I got up the next morning, I sneezed, and a bunch of brown/yellow bloody fluid came out landed on the floor. I was so freaked out. I went to see my doctor, and he looked at it, and said that it was only a small opening in my incision and that my incision did not come apart, he wanted me to let it drain for a day or two. I am going to see him in 2 days, and he thinks that by then it will be just about done draining and starting to heal. He did not seem very concerned. Sent me home with some gauze and tape. But it was REALLY scary. I feel fine. The site is not hurting, in fact in feels better, and I can get around the house better than I did when it was swollen and sore. I'll let you know in 2 days what the doc says, but for now, I am just going to let in drain in the gauze, and keep it clean. Sorry this is not directly linked to a c-section. But I did have 3, and this is the only site where i found someone eles went through the same experience I did with my incision.

I am having the same problem...i had my second csection on 1/5/07..and my incision came opened and got infected. now I have to go into the office every other day to have the incision cleaned and packed...a nurse comes out the on the other days to clean and pack it also.. I will b so glad when this is cleared up and I am no longer leaking fluids...Mayb u should get a second opinion from another dr..I thought about going to c another dr myself...

MuzikGurl - January 19

omg, ur experience sounds like mine...i had my c-section a month ago and a few days after i came home from the hospital i woke up in bed and there was a huge puddle of blood and yellowish fuild all over the sheets..i freaked out called the dr. came in the same day and he told me that it was normal no infection just some slight opening came undone but, just to put some padding on it and clean it with proxide...so, i did but, when i after a few days it was so bad i was soaking through my clothes and everything in fact when i stood up naked it was dripping down my legs...the only thing i could think of that was thick enough to soak it up was to use a thick long maxi pad and fold it long ways and since i am overweight i just tucked it under my stomach and it stayed there and what do u know it worked and all i did was remember to change it out every few hours...after about 3-4 weeks of this it started to slow up and eventually it stopped leaking and now i'm ok...in fact i'm going for my 6 week check up on tuesday to see if everything is healed up good. but, s_x wasn't an issue with it i mean yes i was really sore and all but, we did it very carefully and in fact it was nice and felt better than before i got pregnant..lol. But, yes what u r going through is normal the hospital was supossed to tell you that drainage is normal but unfortunately some hospitals fail to do so...but i understand how scared u were...i was too, still to this day i check onm y incision and make sure i'm not leaking or anything...but, it has healed up and in fact i think it looks very good and because i am overweight u can't tell i even had a c-section scar there...wel, good luck and take care of yourself.

Hi Again! It has been about 10 weeks since my surgery, by about the 8th week, I was ready to open the dam thing myself and clean it out. I was putting peroxide on it, and letting it go in the hole, it never hurt, just fizzed alot. The other night, I was pleased to see that it had hardly leaked all day, so, when I went to shower that night, I saw a lime green plug (all this time it had been green and full of pus, I had two bacteria swabs sent away, and they came back negative, I was very upset) anyway, the green 'hard' plug I thought was pus that had just hardened and got in the way of letting it drain, so, dissapointed again, I pressed on it, and the 'plug' started to come out, and then it got 'stuck' so I grabbed a piece of toilet paper and pulled. It was long and kind of hard and was covered with green pus. I was scared it was like something from 'alien'. Turns out, it was a st_tch! It had been festering in there all this time causing me grief! I swear, the next day, my 'hole' healed over, and now, it is making a scab. There is no more pus, I AM SO HAPPY!! The drs kept telling me to hang in there and I did (had no other choice), but I wanted to share my story for all of you going through this too, Since I've found so little information on this. I still keep checking it all the time for leakage, I think I will for weeks yet to come. Hang in there, I think a bacteria swab is best, that way you aren't guessing if it is infected or not, Peroxide and lots of low adhesive bandages, cause, my belly is a mess from all the pulling the first few weeks of bandages did. :) Janie2
