I was also told to wear gloves and try not to breath in the dust when scooping or emptying the cat box. The danger is from a bacteria that developes in cat feces after about 12 hours of sitting in the cat box. If your cats are strickly indoors... your chance of exposure is less likely than if your cats go outside and eat dead (yuck!) things. One idea my midwife told me was to clean the cat box often (several times a day or immediately after your kitty has done its "business" in there). Because the bacteria takes several hours to develope, the quicker your scoop the poop... the less likely you are to get exposed. Another thing to remember... cats poop in flower beds, etc... outside. Always wear gloves when weeding and gardening because you can get exposed that way without even realizing the danger.
