Insect Bite

I have an insect bite on the back of my knee that has developed a red streak about two inches long. I've never had one do that before, and I wondered if anyone else had experienced strange reactions to insect bites during pregnancy.

Hi JBear - Is the bug bite itself swollen? I would definitely try putting some alcohol or something antiseptic on it for now, but the streak would make me a little nervous. That can be a sign of infection. I would just keep an eye on it, but go to the doctor if the line doesn't go away or you start to feel a little sick (you would feel sick if you had a blood infection like that). Then again, I have found that the pregnant body does weird things....

I put neosporin on it when I first noticed it, which was Saturday. It's Wednesday now, and the streak hasn't gotten any bigger, but my thigh has started feeling tingly and a little cold, so I'm going to call the doctor tomorrow.

I would love to know what happened. I have an insect bite on my shoulder that went from the size of a dot to the size of a half dollar coin. It is red and swollen, and itchy. I am almost 5 mos pregnant. What did your doctor say? (my email is mikeandholly224@aol.com)

I think I'd call my dr's office to ask a triage nurse if i needed to come in to be looked at.

When you're pregnant you're immune system is decreased, so your reaction would be different. How ever, it sounds like you scratched it a whole lot, especially where it is cold. If you scratch you deaden the nerves. If it was infected it'd be warm. That said, if your body is saying "this isn't right" get it checked out!

I never did call the doctor about my bug bite. I've asked him so many dumb questions that I was almost afraid to ask another. I decided I must have been scratching it in my sleep, so I slept with pants on for a couple of days so I couldn't scratch, and it pretty much went away. The reason it was scaring me was that the circle around the bug bite was looking purplish, and my sister has a strange bleeding disorder where she gets huge purple spots under her skin, so I was worried that might be happening to me.

I have not called the doc either, because it seems to be getting better. The swelling has gone down, and so has the redness. It has actually changed to a blue/brown/purple color. It looks like a bruise now. Thanks for the info though. Good luck with your pregnancy!

I also had a bite on Saturday night to Sunday night. I got also very scared, because it was swollen and red/pink. Now it is getting better, but i think i will better call the doc's office. Does anybody have an idea what kind of insect they are? Thanks !

The bite I had was probably a mosquito bite. I didn't see the bug, but you feel an ant bite when it happens, and usually don't feel a mosquito bite until later. I've been bitten by a spider before and that's an entirely different level of pain.
