Back And Rib Pain

i have had this also, It started about 2 months ago, I am now 32 wks. I finally went to a chiropractor that works on pregnant women, she said about 1/3 of her preg patients have this and it is nerve pain. It affects the same nerve that is often affected with shingles. She has helped me so much. It has not went away by any means, but I am able to be up all day and not be in a total misery. My bra gives me fits, I finally found that is huge on me and I can kind of stand it. When it starts hurting I push on that area and hold it for a while and try to stretch out. It also helps to sit and stand as straight as possible. Driving is sometimes pretty uncomfortable. But I am MUCH better than I was...... So hang in there and try to find a chiropractor that is gentle and knows something about this strange pain.

I am having the same problem. I am 39 wks along and suffer intensely from this rib pain on my right side under my b___st. My dr. tells me to watch my posture but that doesn't help either. I'm not sure what to do short of medicine..which I am trying to avoid.

I am almost 8 weeks pregnant and am having this pain under my braline and ribs. It feels like when I eat bananas and my whole stomach is so full of gas but it can't get out. Is this normal?

I have the same pain. I'm glad to know I'm not alone! I had it with my last pregnancy, but it was on the left side. It lasted for the entire last 2 months of my pregnancy. Now with this pregnancy I cried when it came back, this time in my right side, Iknew it was the same thing and wasn't going to go away. I am only 20 weeks and have SO much pregnancy left to go. I found that not wearing a bra, tylenol and a BIG heating pad that wraps from the middle of your chest to the middle of your back helps alot. When I can't be attached to a heating pad those thermacare heat patches work well.

I just started to get this right sided rib pain at 23 weeks. It is not constant however, feel it when I cough, sneeze, breathe deeply, burp, laugh. Sounds like your guy's pain is more in front, where mine is definately more on my side and yours sounds like it's constant. It's really annoying. Sounds like we just have to put up with it.

I am 28 weeks pregnant and i also feel this really sharp annoying pain in my right ribcage following through towards my back. I hate it. It is very unbearable at times and i just want to scream. It does help though when i lay on my left side to sleep, but it definantely does not go away. I had just went to the doctors today and tomorrow i go for an ultrasound to find out if it is gall stones. Hopefully not. It also gives me hope that i have read so many of your entries and alot of you have had ultrasounds and it has came back normal. Plus, i know that it isn't a foot because my baby is still in breech! Gosh i hope it goes away!

I don't believe I am pregnant, but I am having the exact same pain as you have described, first starting at the rib under my b___st on the right side and eventually traveling to my back. I was laughing one night with my boyfriend and heard something pop in my back. Anyone have the same experience?

I am 15 weeks and have the same sharp rib pain as you all describe. The sharp painfulness started only 2 days ago and I started to panic. I have always felt uncomfortable pressure in that area , but sharp pain where I need to stop what I am doing and breathe deeply -no. So hope we find a solution or way to soothe the pain at least...I thought it was the baby at first but think it is too soon!?

I just want to say thank you. I have been absolutely miserable with pain under my right rib. It hurts when I walk, sit and even while in bed lying on the opposite side. I find walking more slowly helps, trying to be conscious of how I breath during the day (deeper breaths) and after reading your entries I am on my way to buy both hot and cold packs & will alternate use. Tylenol has not helped. It's been very difficult and I literally pray to God that this pain will subside so I can try to enjoy life more until due date. My husband feels helpless and I try not to talk about it much, but I simply can't help sighs of pain from sharp pain on my right side. I will check with doctor, but so happy to learn that I am not alone. God bless you all. Hang in there!

I am so glad that I found this site!! I am currently 32 weeks but have been suffering with this same pain since week 28. The pain is always on my right side, and is concentrated on the front and back. My doctor has given me Tylenol with codine and just gave me some Vicodin, but trust me, nothing makes this pain go away. It also feels like the muscles in my back are clamped in a vice so I take a lot of baths and the heating pad has become my best friend. I agree with you all, you just have to hang in there because the pain is persistant. Even the chiropractor or physical therapy couldn't help me. I have found that laying on my left side to the baby rolls that direction take a lot of the pressure away. Ladies if you suffer this pain at work don't hesitate to lay on the floor in your office to take a little break. Everyone around me is supportive and they don't ask twice when they see me taking a break on the floor. Why is it that no doctor can figure this out? I am convinced that the baby is just irritating nerves in my back that make everything clamp up. I sometimes get relief too by just pushing the baby over myself. Best of luck to you all! I am counting the weeks until my baby is born.

I had to write one more time because I wanted to share something that has helped me since my entry only two days ago. I am 30 weeks pregnant and like you, was seriously suffering with the right rib pain...to the point of being unbearable, frightening and literally brought me to tears many times. After reading your entries it helped so much so that night I got a heating pad and ice packs to alternate use. I think it helped some...but to be honest, and at the risk of sounding "strange", I will say that what I really believe helped me the most was a very, very sincere prayer to God and Jesus Christ asking for healing relief...at least to allow me to move around because lying, sitting, and walking all were difficult. Believe it or not, the next day, the pain has subsided...not completely, but a HUGE difference. I had tried heating pads before but didn't really get relief. I only write again to offer the suggestion of a prayer request, if you haven't done so already, it may help you tremendously. It's certainly worth a try!! (Lastly, I don't know if all this pain is coming from the baby kicking the ribs simply because many of you have mentioned this type of pain in early pregnancy when the baby hasn't developed enough to kick or to push utereus as far as late pregnancy...all I know is it's real and be it hormonal changes, bone structure loosening, expanding utereus, etc.., I do hope we all can find some relief. Thanks for the opportunity to share and thank you God & Jesus for your healing energy.

I have pain under my right rib. It can be sharp and sudden or dull and deep. Sometimes it feels like a bulge. I thought it might be a hernia. My GYN saw me today and said that she has the same condition herself. It is a floating rib. Many women have it, but doctors don't think of it or pay attention to it. She didn't even know she had it until a radiologist friend of hers was reviewing her chest x-ray. He told her everything was normal. She commented on the pain she was having and he said, "Oh,that is probably just your floating rib." He said that it is so common that radiologists don't even note it unless that is what the issue in question is about. Of course, if you are preganant, there is a lot going on in that area and it can inflame the rib joint causing even more discomfort. She told me to take motrin (as anti-inflammatory) 2x per day for 2-3 weeks. When it hurts, she suggests leaning back, stretching, and pushing down on the rib to put it back in place. I'm not pregnant, so if you are, check with your doctor before taking motrin. Hope this helps someone! Mary

I wanted to respond to Yvonne's entry from yesterday. I agree one hundred percent with you. The day I had my biggest break down from the pain I prayed for relief of any kind, and right when I did the baby kicked twice as if to say he/she was sorry. The next two days I was pain free and it made a world of difference. Never underestimate the power of prayer.

I am 28 weeks now, and I have been experiencing pain on my left side under my ribs. The pains moves to the middle of my back. I can't stand for long, or sit for long. It is very uncomfortable. The only time I feel any relief is when I'm reclined or laying completely flat. I still have 12 weeks to go. I work by a computer, so it is very uncomfortable for me. I will tell my OB/GYN when I see him next week.
