Emmie, it is probably your siatica nerve near your but, the baby is probably hitting the nerve, it happens all the time try a heating pad, I am 19 weeks and still have alot of discomfort in my back and ribs, but it is perfectly normal.

I've had this pain & it's getting worse. I had the u/s done for my gall bladder. Nothing! Now it seems to go around my back & feels like my kidney. Only lying down helps. There has to be something we can do.
My doc put me on Pepcid...what's that gonna do???!!!??? Ugh!
My ribs hurt so bad I don't wanna do anything....now my back too? There MUST be something!

I'm 32 weeks and have the same pain on my right side wrapping around from my b___st to my spine. Dr thinks baby is kicking my ribs and also the muscles between my ribs are stretching to accomodate him and my organs. its very painful sometimes but I find a warm bath helps and gently ma__saging the area. Its good to know its not just me - I thought I was a freak!

It's such a relief to read that so many women are going through the same thing! I'm at 30 weeks now and I've had a dull ache under my right b___st for about 2 months - it seemed like a muscle cramp though that I got when slouched over my computer or on the couch, and it went away when I stretched backwards. For the past week though it's been a much sharper pain, more in my ribs, and it feels almost more superficial, like the skin itself is sensitive to the touch. My midwife was concerned it might be a preeclampsia-related symptom, but blood tests (liver etc) all came back negative, as did urine tests. Reading everyone's posts I might ask for an ultrasound to rule out gallbladder problems - but other than that it sounds like it might just be par for the course. Thanks everyone for sharing!

These symptoms began for me around 10-12 weeks with pain in the right ribs of my back, and (more consistently) as discomfort under my right ribs - feeling as if I constantly needed to stretch out. For a week or two it seemed to fade, but over the last few days it has returned with more extreme pain and soreness. Here's what I have learned: (1) during pregnancy, our ribs soften and expand, and our uterus stretches upward - both of which can be painful; (2) pregnancy stresses our gall bladders and kidneys, and it is not uncommon to experience gallstones or kidney stones. Therefore, you should get an abdomenal ultrasound to rule out organ issues (mine showed no problems) (3) depending on your baby's size and position, he/she can push against your organs and "use your gall bladder as a punching bag". As early as 10 weeks, my 2nd twin was stacked on the right side on top of the other one and his head/feet seem to be very close to that sore area. So, as I understand it ... once you rule out gall bladder/kidney problems, we will just have to "grin and bear it", lay down if it makes you feel better and I a__sume if it gets too extreme you can ask your OB about pain management. Hope this helps!

Doc did blood work and all is fine. So, it's just muscles. I do feel better since he's checked EVERYTHING though.
I just can't believe muscles can hurt this bad.

I am 28 weeks and I have the same pain on the right side just underneath of my ribs. I have had this pain for about 2 months. I told the doctor and she said that it was probably just that my rib cage was inflammed and to apply heat and use Tylenol. The Tylenol doesn't even touch the pain. The heat seems to give me some temporary relief, but this pain is a killer! I would be open to any suggestions that anyone has to help me get through the next 12 weeks. I feel like I am not enjoying my pregnancy because I am constantly miserable with this pain!!!!!

My doc said he'd prescribe pain killers cause Tylenol won't do a thing! I don't really wanna take those so I think I'll just deal w/it. He said it may stop as she gets lower. That's not soon enough!

Michelle,
I have had this same pain since I was 17 weeks along. My doctor ran blood tests, did and ultra sound of my gall bladder and everything has come back fine. He says that it is the muscle stretching and that there really is not much that you can do for it. He gave my Tylenol 2 and this did not touch the pain so I am not taking it. I find that the pain is the worst when I am sitting (however I have no choice since I work on a computer all day). I find the most relief when I get up and walk and stretch or lie down. I can understand the being miserable part and not feeling like you are enjoying the prenancy but if your case is anything like mine the pain will subside. On the plus side, I am 31 weeks along and the pain has finally started to dull. I have not dropped yet so I am a__suming that your body just adapts. Hope this helps!

Erin,
I'm in the same boat...just waiting for it to subside!!
Sitting kills me. I'd much rather be walking or laying down. Do crunches help?

I am 24 wks with twins. I am having pain on my left side right below my bra line, which recently extended to my back. The pain gets worst whan I eat even a small amount. I feel pressure and burning like inflammation. I asked my doctor and he told me it is normal. I could not find a solution yet. It is a relief to find out that other preganant women experience the same.

I had intense sharp pain, like a knife stabbing, on the left side of my lower ribcage. It was so painful I couldn't sleep well and if I took a normal or deep breath I would scream out in pain. The advise nurse said it was just my expanding womb pressing against organs and my ribcage. (I was 26 weeks) I decided to go for long walks to try and get gravity to move everything down away from my ribs and after 2 days of long 2 hour walks, the pain was gone and is still gone. I am now 28 weeks.
