Marijuana And Pregnancy

Why is anyone trying to justify this? Do you realize that smoking pot is ILLEGAL??? What would the doctor do if you went into labour just after you smoked a joint? I would hope that he would be calling social services immediatly. Having the ability to have children is one of the greatest gifts in the world and you have the nerve and audacity to jepordize the health of your baby just because you cannot face your life without being high!! How could you, really I am curious, and to "your freind" there are millions of women who suffer with morning sickness that do not use it as an excuse to justify smoking pot. Nice try, and "Darla" as if- anyone with half a brain knows that smoking anything during pregnancy harms you child, think about it, what does it do to your brain when you smoke pot?? And you don't think it would have an effect on a DEVELOPING brain. If crystal didn't know it was harmful then she has obviously smoked a bit too much pot. I am appaulled that anyone would ever try to justify that. What next?? Drinking calms peoples nerves so should I have a drink when I'm upset? Or do some coke when I have a long night ahead of me. Come on.

my sister in law just gave birth, throught her whole pregnancy she smoked weed, not a heavy smoker but she was a smoker, well the baby was born with a hole in his heart, has to sleep sitting up or he will stop breathing in his sleep, take it from me smoking weed isnt ur best bet when u are pregnant, and personaly if ur dumb enough to do something that stupid while ur caring for another life, i personaly dont think that u have any right being a parent, being a parent means to take responsibilty and in this case for those of u who do smoke have no responsibilty and no love for ur child! give u child the gift of life stop playing god and taking away his/her oxygen!

Studies show that smoking marijuana is more harmful in the third trimester then the first and second. This is not true with most drugs. I also have smoked pot, I have 2 kids and choose not to smoke when pregnant, why take the chance. I am not one of these people who are against marijuana, in fact I am for it, but I beleive your baby has every right to have the best start in life you can give it. I mean come on, you don't have withdrawls with pot why not stop atleast until baby is born??

Dear Crystal, I have smoked my share of pot in my days. But when I became pregant with my son I stop the day I found out. It was not a study that made me stop or a doctor, it was myself and my own responsible descions. I was also sick a the begginging of my pregancy and thought weed my be the cure. But the guilt was way to heavy. You said you where seven months so you must not be to far from your due date now. Just look down at your belly when you want to hit some weed. If that isn't enough for you then I guess whatever happens with you and your baby is in gods hands.

jesse - July 16

i know alot of people who smoked weed and had healthy kids, but one lady who did had a mentally retarted child.

Natalie - July 18

Crystal, You should have had your baby by now. How is the baby?

Amie - July 18

I cant believe anyone would think it wouldnt harm your baby. Just the smoke alone would affect the babys lungs...duh. But my doctor says it leads to ADD ADHD and many other learning disabilities that may not appear in the child until it is older. But why would anyone even think it was okay if your not suppose to take certain medicine while pregnant why the hell would you smoke weed.

J - July 18

Would you smoke weed around the baby and b__w it in his/her face after it was born, so why would you do it while pregnant..thats is what i call selfish on your part.

Pam - July 18

I think those that do not wish to see everyones point of view are the ones with "half a brain". When you go for your next check up at your doctor please do ask them what any of the known effects of smoking MJ are to an unborn child. hmmm they can't answer that can they, nobody can, so maybe you all should stop thinking your so d__n right about everything when nobody is really right or wrong regarding this.

ASA - July 19

It's so not worth the risk. Learning disabilities, ADHD, low birth weight. I hope your baby is ok, but I wouldn't take that type of chance. Anything can happen if you do or don't, but I would be careful. I would feel guilty just if things happened to turn out differently. You can't listen to everyone. Talk to your doctor. I am sure he/she told you that was a no-no. Hopefully the baby is fine.

Im not really sure im a pot smoker and i try to slow down some now that im pregnant, but it is so very hard, i dont eat when i dont smoke and i know thats really bad, and when i do stop smoking a get really sick to where im vomiting up nothing cause i haven't had any pot, i dont know what that means but, i know throwing up nothing really puts a strain on my stomach, and deprives my child of nutrients, whats a girl to do, but it is a secret that i do when i smoke, i eat something very good for the baby, like yogurt, uhm oj, eat an apple something that will give my child something more than thc, oh yeah always smoke in zig zags or pipe, so your not gettting anything other than weed, believe me people that dont think its right us pot smokers are feeling very guilty for what we are doing, but just cant controll it like others......

mel - July 20

I think rene summed it up...it's an addiction and you've become dependent on weed to eat. I worked in pediatrics so I know first hand they drug test babies and your new pediatrican gets a copy of all blood work (negative and positive). I guess the question is would you let your baby suck on a joint while they're in their crib? Thats exactly what you're doing. Everything we eat, drink, and breathe our baby eats, drinks and breathes it. Save the drugs after the birth, its only fair. Your baby isnt here to make the decision for itself so you have to make that decision for them and I think if they were born I dont think they'd ask for a joint!

Marjuana has been coorelated with some learning problems later in life..but a bigger issue here is how do you want to raise your child? more damage will be done to your child by saying the behavior is OK and by hanging out with people who say the behavior is OK... because it is ILLEGAL!! That is substance abuse...so you really want your child to be a substance abuser? Because chances are he/she will be..get some new friends..and if you think your child will ONLY do pot and nothing else guess again...how much do you drink?

N - July 20

It's so hard to say what will happen one way or the other. There are some that say it causes learning dissabilities, deformities, retardation ect, other say it is perfectly fine. The fact is, there is no proof one way or the other. Some studies have infact shown it causes problems, but they are invalid because they are uncontrolled studies on women who may or may not also be consuming cigerettes, alcohol, cocaine ect.. Marijuana is a controlled substance, and is not something they are willing to test pregnant women with, so no specific studies have been done. They can use statistics, but again this is unreliable because a very high percentage of women will not be completely honest in disclosing their habits for general knowledge. I have even read conflicting reports as to how much marijuana will cross the placenta, not to mention whether or not it even does. As for marijuana itself.. WELL, it is illigal because a woman who prided herself on her 'observation' skills in the 1930's (Emily Murphy) wrote a book called 'the black candle' who described marijuana users as 'raving lunatics', and 'hopeless addicts who would kill their own families for a fix'. This is just plain silly, and knowing what we know now, this is clearly untrue, and sounding more like a crack or meth addict than a marijuana user. Actually, they have found that marijuana can be used for medicinal purposes, and poses little to no risk for occasional users over a long period of time. I think alot of people have been watching too much tv, and have seen the HORRIBLE commercials a few years ago like the one about the two boys in the dad's office smoking pot and playing with the gun they found in the drawer, and one boy shoots the other (which i think says alot more about gun control than anything) or the kids in the drivethru that run over the little girl (which should be common sense, if you wouldn't drink and drive, would you smoke pot and drive, i mean really? They don't tell you 'don't drink AT ALL because you might run someone over with your car). These commercails where used as 'scare tactics' to stop teenagers from using mary jane, but were pulled off air because they were unfounded and biased. Personally, i don't think that scare tactics, or attacking people for occasional use is worth the time or effort. I think it's very sad that uniformed people are giving personal opinion as 'fact' rather than what it truely is (eg: Amie wrote "smoke alone would affect the babys lungs...duh. " which is ridiculous because unborn babies do not inhail air of any kind). Like another very smart woman put it, if you are that concerned about the substances women are using, go down to your local woman's shelter and help pregnant women who have serious addicton problems and could use the help your willing to offer.

N - July 20

i am truely sorry, i would like to correct what i said about Emly Murphy in my previous post. Her EXACT words were "they become raving maniacs and are liable to kill or indulge in any form of violence." I would also like to add, her book was published in 1922, and contains a quote from Charles A jones, the chief of police for Los Angeles saying " Persons using this narcotic smoke the dried leaves of the plant, which has the effect of driving them completely insane. The addict loses all sense of moral responsibility. Addicts to this drug, while under its influence, are immune to pain, and could be severely injured without having any realization of their condition. While in this condition they become raving maniacs and are liable to kill or indulge in any form of violence, using the most savage methods of cruelty without, as said before, any sense of moral responsibility. When coming from under the influence of this narcotic these victims present the most horrible condition imaginable. They are dispossessed of their natural and normal will power, and their mentality is that of idiots. If this drug is indulged in to any great extent, it ends in the untimely death of it's addict." Now if this is coming from a highly respected police officer in the 1920's, it is taken as truth, but the fact is, we all know now that this is very untrue, and only speculation. The sad truth is that some still believe this...

Thank you, N, for managing to write something here based on common sense and fact, instead of the witchhunt-like, panicky reactions of some of the people on this thread. Not to mention the few people to the other extreme who say they will continue to smoke every day because there is no evidence it will do any harm. I agree with the woman earlier in the thread who said she is glad to live in Europe where laws are more sensible, I think if I lived in America I would kill myself, with the extremely narrow views a lot of people seem to have, hardly anyone seems to be able to think for themselves, or question anything their government tells them.
