Hi! My son will be 4 months on Friday! Today I put him in his crib came downstairs and noticed on the monitor he flipped on to his tummy! He HATES being on his stomach...so I went upstairs flipped him again and he flipped agin. So each time he does it he has a fit and he keeps crying! This baby is an awesome sleeper too. He has slept through the night since he was 2 months old. I put him down at 9 pm and he wakes between 7-8am. So I am very concerned tonight that we are not going to sleep. Any suggestions would be great. Or do I just have to wait till he learns to flip from his belly to his back? I'm also concerned about SIDS as well, but with him hating being on his back so much I'm sure he will learn quick to flip. Thanks :O)

Hi Barbara - October 19

Try one of those wedge pillow things. He fits in between the wedges and they prevent him from rolling over. I would only use it if he kept rolling over and it was disturbing is sleep. He has to get used to being on his tummy eventually.

Usually, babies can flip from belly to back before back to belly. Their arms flip them over because they dont have muscle tone and cant hold themselves up for long periods of time, usually one arm gives out and the flip over accidentally!

i was in the same boat a few weeks ago my baby will flip onto her belly and start crying because she hated it. she would even wake herself up when she rolled in her sleep, i tried one of those wedges and it worked for a week then she found out a way to rolled onto her belly in between the pillow!!! so i just decided to let her roll over eventhough i was also afraid of SIDS but i figured if she was strong enough to roll over then she might not have a high risk for it. but i did spent some sleepless nights worrying and checking up on her. the best thing you can do is just wait until he outgrows this phase it should only last 3 weeks or so my daughter rolls over from her back to her belly and vise versa with no difficulty. and she doesnt seemed to be bothered when she's on her belly :) good luck! she's 6 months now

Tahlia now does the same thing. I go in to check on her and she is on her tummy with her legs hanging out one side and her arms reaching for the toys on the floor. I'm sorry but there's not much you can do! Just flip them back and hope they'll fall asleep before rolling again. Actually, try giving him a toy to cuddle to distract him from rolling. That works sometimes.

Hi! Thanks everyone who wrote in! Just as I suspected last night was pretty tough...I flipped him over at 1:00 am,then he awoke again on his tummy at 5:00am screaming! My husband got up with him so that was nice. I hope he learns how to flip unto his back,if not we are going to have many sleepless nights! Of course right now he is asleep in his swing :O) Thanks again for writing in,have a good day!

my daughter will be 3 months on the 28th and on the 17th she stared rolling over everytime she was on her back it is quite worrysome she hates being on her tummy I am not sure how I can stop her from rolling over, when she rolls over her tounge comes out and she starts licking the blanket, I knew she liked to lick soft satiny blankets but come on rolling over to do so, what am I in for next. Take care Love it though they only are small once.
