Could Baby Be Allergic To Rice Cereal

Trying to make a long story short...I also am awaiting a call back from my dd's pediatrician. So a week or so ago I fed my dd rice cereal at night (1 TBSP mixed with br___tmilk to a runny consistency). We'd done this before at least 5 times. When we'd give her the rice cereal we just do the 1 tablespoon at night, so only once a day. She was fine with it the first several times. Well, last week when I gave it to her we hadn't done it for a week or so because she got kind of fussy/excited the last time and was knocking the spoon everywhere, etc. So about 4 hours later she woke up from a nap and I was going to put her in bed and she started vomiting. I was so freaked out because she sounded like she was choking! She did this until nothing was coming up and we went to the ER because she was acting listless and wouldn't smile or respond, etc. We were there for hours and she slept in my arms. By the time the dr. saw her she was back to herself and all checked out well (no temp when we first got there or anything else wrong with her). She br___tfed and kept it down, etc. So I didn't give her any again until last night and we did the rice cereal (I tossed the old in case and bought a new box -- Gerbers both times though). Then about 4 hours later (again) her dad woke up and heard her making those choking noises and woke me up and she was laying in a puddle of spit up/vomit. I was freaking out and we changed her and patted her back and she threw up one more time but this time it was like stomach bile. Then she slept in my arms the rest of the night I stayed up all night long so scared to put her back to bed. After sleeping a while she woke and br___tfed and was fine. Still fine today. SORRY SO LONG! Anyways, is there a chance she's allergic to rice cereal even though she was fine with it the first 5-7 times she had it??? The last 2 times she ate it she's vomited about 4 hours after. The first episode she had Gerber DHA rice cereal and then the 2nd and last time she had plain GErber rice cereal.

just to note also the two times she got sick it was not from the same cannister of rice cereal, so no chance really of it being bad.

From what I hear, it's very rare for a baby in the US to be allergic to rice grain....but it's definitely possible. After 5-7 times you would think that it would have shown up sooner, though. Maybe she's developing reflux and it's manifesting itself at a strange time? I don't think the brand would make a difference since it's just single grain rice. How soon before bed are you giving it to her? Maybe it's too close to her bed time and it's hard for her to digest before she sleeps. I hope you figure it out soon!

I wonder...I was never told not to do before bed, but maybe I DID do it too late? The first vomiting episode I fed it to her around 6 or 7 and by 10:30 or 11 she started vomiting. The second episode I fed her late like 9 or 10pm )she had been sleeping for a couple of hours prior) and the vomiting started around 2am or a little before. Do you think it might have been the time? I think I'm going to wait about 3 weeks and try again but this time I'll do it in the morning.

Hmm...I have never heard or read of a baby being allergic to rice cereal. Why don't you try another cereal like barley or oat. My ds gets cereal 2x a day (6 months old). Once at about 9:30-10am and then again at about 5-5:30pm. He goes to bed at 7-7:30pm. When you are starting solids its always a good idea to try new foods for breakfast. That way if there is a reaction then baby won't have to sleep with a sore tummy. Try out another cereal but in the morning. Hopefully there isn't anymore puking. Poor baby!

How old is your is your daughter? It's possible that her digestive system just isn't ready to handle solids just yet

Another thing to consider: Since you are mixing with b___st milk...what did YOU eat prior to mixing the cereal and/or feeding her? Maybe it's not the cereal at all, but something from what you ate that's not agreeing with her. Try to think back.

My dd is 5 months old, so I'm wondering if she's just not ready yet. That still doesn't explain to me why she was ok with it the first few times we gave her the cereal though. I can't remember exactly what I ate, but I do remember thinking about that the last time. I think I had Subway, which I eat a LOT. She is exclusively b___stfed and I've read now that sometimes b___stfed babies take a bit longer to adjust to solids. I don't know? I will just wait a couple of weeks and try the rice cereal again in the morning. After a week of that I think I'll start a vegetable. At that point she'll be 6 months so hopefully all will be well :)

stefkay, may I ask what ended up happening/how your wee one progressed with cereal? I had a very similar story - my baby ate rice cereal at night for a month, we moved countries, I fed him a rice cereal from the new country, he vomited, same with oatmeal and when I had a friend bring me the original (Gerber) rice cereal he had been fine with, he vomited again. I have read about a protein intolerance called FPIES which apparently can last until age 3 - is your child now eating grains or does she still have problems with them? My baby is 7months old and I'm wondering if I'll ever be able to feed him cereal or bread in the future or if we'll be sticking to fruits and veges from here on out! Thanks.

My baby is 7 months old and is experiencing the exact same thing as your baby. If you are still on this site I would love to hear from you and see what happened.
If I wrote down what happens to my baby it would be your post word for word..

littlenikah, my little boy is now over 2 and I am glad to report that he's been eating rice, oats (and pretty much everything!) for over a year - he seemed to have outgrown the FPIES (a protein intolerance - there are helpful facebook pages about it) at around a year, which was a huge relief. Based on our experience, I would just give it a while and be very careful about the ingredients in the food you give your baby as the slightest bit of rice, rice starch or oats set my baby off - read every ingredient list and make sure everyone around him/her knows about the problem. My pediatrician had never heard of FPIES and was very ignorant about the whole thing (I changed doctors right after) but it's definitely worth discussing with yours when you get the chance. When you do try with rice again, make sure it's a very tiny amount and keep an eye on what happens (the vomiting always started exactly 90 minutes after eating for us). Until then, try millet as a subst_tute. Also, wheat was never a problem, but whenever you try any grains, use them in a very tiny amount in case you get a reaction. FPIES isn't limited to grains though - do a google search and you'll find much more now than what was out there when I looked nearly 2 years ago! It's a terrifying experience but once you understand it and when you're careful, you can avoid the reactions. Rice and oats are now among my little boys favourites :) Good luck!

My daughter also grew out of it at about a year. She is over 2 now and eats food containing rice flour and is ok with all grains. A Dr. Never confirmed it was an intolerance to rice, but I know it was. Sounds like it goes away on its own. Those trips to the ER are scary and there was a time I was really worried. Just stay away from rice and grains for awhile.
