Hand Sucking

I have two questions really... My son is 15 weeks. He sucks his hands so much I think they are going to be raw... Does anyone else's baby do that? Also, he still scratches his face at night while he is sleeping. I thought that should be gone by now. We resorted to putting those little mittens on him again. Does anyone's baby still do that? He made his forehead bleed so badly in the mall last week I was horrified!

My baby sucked on her hands and still does. It's a way for them to soothe themselves. Plus she was teething. She has 2 teeth coming in so she chews on her fingers more now. About him scratching his face, do you keep his nails trimmed? My daughter still scratches her face from time to time and she's 4 months. She does it when she gets really mad but it doesn't bleed.

my son is over 4 months and he has scratched his face...he does it when he gets mad. I cut his nails but he still seems to be able to scratch his face. he also puts his hands in his mouth but its because they are teething ....they need to bite on something. I still put mittens on him sometimes but because its so cold I feel bad that his hands get so cold.

My baby sucks his two fingers constantly as well. I don't mind it too much, I think it's nice that he has figured out how to soothe himself. I sucked my thumb as a child, no harm done. No buck teeth either.

sometimes they suck their hands if they have oral thrush, that might be why he scratches his face so bad out of frustraition, you can get him swab checked for it, check tounge for white, just a thought, or its they are hungry

Are you talking about my son? LOL.Jesse is 19 weeks old (today) and he does that a lot.Now he is lifting his b___t a lot so i think soon he will be busy with his toes.I also clip his nails about twice a week, but he always seem to find a way to scratch himself. He woke up this morning with a scratch above his eyebrow. And i don't want to put mittens on him at night b/c he is so busy with his hands, aespecially in the morning when he wakes up.He don't cry,i just wake up b/c i can hear him cooing and playing. He even gives me enough time to make his bottle and make coffee for me.

Asjani sucks her index and middle fingers together and she is 7 months old. I agree with CEM...I also think it's awesome that she knows how to soothe herself. I also sucked my thumb as a child, no bucked teeth.

My son sucks on his hands non stop. I have to put vasoline on his cheeks because he drags his spit all over his face. He drools and sucks and chews on those hands! And anything else he can get into his mouth. I cut his nails constantly and he still scratches himself endlessly! It never ends.

My son loves to suck on anything. He puts his hands in his mouth when he can't get to his paci. The problem, though, is that he has such big hands and a extremely large thumb that he makes himself spit up. When he is sleepy he scratches his eyes, which is very cute. The problem with this is coordination is not always the best (3 1/2mos) and he scratches his face. I cut his nails pretty low but he still is able to scratch himself. Go figure.

My babygirl does the same thing. Whenever she drops her paci she puts her hand in instead. the other day she was sucking on her wrist and it look like a big bruse(sp?) it went away fast thank god I didn't want people asking me if i had hurt her wrist or something. She also still manages to scratch, i sometimes cut her nails and then file(sp?) them.

Dylan sucks on his hands all the time. We tried a binky for the soothing, but he won't take one at all. He still scratches himself too, but only when he's really mad, which is if I'm late with the food!

Thanks Guys... The "book" mention nothing about the scratching and hand sucking. I feel like I do clip his nails constantly, but he still manages to scratch! I thought it was just a real newborn thing. Seems sort of primitive to me, but glad to know he isn't the only one. Guess I'm just paranoid!
