I was wondering (besides the doctor) how does one figure out if thier babies have eczema or just a rash. I have seen children with eczema but I'm guessing that I never saw a bad case bc it looked like a normal rash to me. What are the signs of eczema?

Rash is more of a generic name for dermat_tis but what we think of as "just a rash" will come and go, where eczema is persistent and recurring..... but it's hard to tell, you are correct. The causes for the two are usually different too, but they are both forms of atopic dermat_tis. What you need to know, is that normally you don't treat anything inside the diaper with steroids if you self medicate, and normally those are rashes not eczema. For other parts of the body excluding the face, eczema responds well to steroids.

Most eczema is caused by allergic reactions. The most common are dairy products, eggs, wool, and citrus.

Eczema usually occurs in the creases. It is also accompanied by dry skin patches and itchiness. Sometimes the skin can weep if it is severly scratched. Eczema does not usually occur in the diaper area from what I've experienced. Asjani has it and hers triggers if the air is really dry or if she is on carpet.

Toya what exactly do you mean by "weep"?

The irritated skin leaks a clear fluid that crusts over. (It is NOT pretty!) When Asjani was first diagnosed with eczema at 2 months she had a little weeping behind her ears.

It can also be caused by environmental toxins. Outga__sing of new items in the home such as furniture or carpet and things made of soft plastic. Also pesticides and cleaning products.
