Bassinet Vs Crib

Ladies, for those of you who have experienced this before - I am debating on whether we should get a bassinet. We live in a small Manhattan apt and will be moving by the time baby is a few months old (i am due in April). Did your infant sleep in the crib right away?? Is it simpler to keep him closer to you? I am having a c-section. thank u.

I have a ba__sinet and a crib, but I co-sleep. :-) You will probably really like the convenience of a ba__sinet in your room, at least until the baby starts to sleep through the night.

I think the convenience of a ba__sinette might be the best, especially if that is what your space allows for the first few months. We co sleep as well, it never worked for my son. He needs to be touching me while we sleep!

Jamie, thank you. The crib would be in the same room anyway... but i was just wondering whether having the baby right next to u at night (for feedings??) is an advantage. thanks!

RAchel, thank you. By co-sleep, do you mean you keep your son in bed with you? In a basket or does he just sleep with you? thanks

Rachael mommy2lucas - December 12

Yes, he sleeps in my bed. My kid wants to make sure I don't escape. LOL! That is the only way he will sleep at night. I gave up at 5 weeks old trying to get him to sleep in his own bed. I needed a night's rest.

I co-slept all night for the first 3 months...then there was an accident involving baby girl kicking in her sleep, and encountering bits of Dad that Dad didn't liked having kicked...lol...so now she's in the crib until 5 am, when he goes to work; she comes to bed with me then, and we co-sleep til we get up at 8.

Klava~ I live in a small Brooklyn apt. and we opted to get a crib. We decided against the ba__sinet bc they tend to grow out of them very quickly. The crib is not in our room but my son's room is very close to ours. It is easier to have him (are you having a boy?) closer to you bc of the pain from the c-section and for the night time feedings. I, on the other hand couldn't sleep in my bed after I came home (had a c-section) bc it was too high and I had a hard time getting on and off of it (too much pain). I had to sleep on the couch for a few days.

I co-sleep after my dh leaves for work as well bc I want to give my son as much room as possible.

TC, thanks for such an elaborate answer. Wow, you must have been in a lot of pain. Was your tissue healing properly? Do you regret having to have a c-section? Sorry for so many questions, i am a bit anxious. :) naturally.

TC - December 12

Klava ,I have no problems answering questions. Yes, the tissue was healing properly I just could not get on and off my bed. My bed is really high and the pain was too much for me to bear. I didn't have an elective c-section, I had an emergency one. My son was too big to fit (9lbs 9oz ). I tried and tried but got to 8cm and he was stuck. Do I regret having a c-section? No. I just wish that I was a bit more prepared for it. I labored for 22hrs and then had to have one and was scared out of my mind. I kept on thinking that I was going to die.

TC, oh my.. so sorry you had to go through that! I am glad you're well. :) My bed is regular height so should be okay. I think i may hire a baby nurse for the first week or two to help. Did you have help?

TC - December 12

My dh was able use his vacation days so he was home with me for about a wk and a half. That was cool, bc he was able to screen the calls and monitor the family visits. He was like my personal a__sistant. LOL! By time he went back to work I felt much better and was able to sleep in the bed again. I declined a baby nurse bc I had my dh, but if he was not home, I would have gotten one.

Klava - Here's what i LOVE and wish i had purchased instead of wasting money on the crib, pack-n-play and cradle: a MINI CRIB. Just do a search on Google for mini crib and you can see some that Target and BabyCenter.com sells. They are perfect for a little bedroom or apartment - and baby can grow into it. They are so cute and I regret not buying one - it would have been perfect for our cramped little bedroom. Here's a link to one color choice (as always, remove dashes (-) in the link in order to view the webpage): http://mii.babyuniverse.com/product_images/pic/215/l215-83901.jpg

Kate, thanks for the input! This looks just like a regular crib... is it a mini crib? :) Thanks.

kate - December 12

yeah, it is a mini crib. dimensions are 38Hx28Wx40.5L. Regular cribs are around 60 inches long by about 45 inches wide. I'm guessing (haven't seen one in person) that it's a bit bigger than a pack-n-play. And the ones I've read about have four height levels for the mattress. there are no moveable parts - the sides don't come down - but JEEPERS i wish i had bought one! Maybe with this baby we will.

to Kate - December 12

Kate thanks for pointing this out to me! So if you do buy one (or if I do) :), how long would you say you could use something like this? Up to a year or less?
