Nadya Had Her Vaccinations Today

It was horrible. She was in a lovely, peaceful sleep and I couldn't wake her up, so the nurse had to carry on and stick the needle in anyway. She woke up with a scream and started crying inconsolably. She was staring at me the whole time, wondering what the h__l was going on, and I felt like the wickedest mother in the world, because I had to hold her down. She hadn't even got over that, when the nurse stuck a needle in the other leg, informing me, that this would hurt her even more. At this point, I was crying too! HORRIBLE! She slept for a few hours then woke up screaming again. She screamed for two hours, and just couldn't calm down. She wouldn't even feed. I gave her calpol for the pain, and she's sleeping again now, but she keeps sqealing in pain, whilst she sleeps. We have to do it all over again in a month's time. I don't want to go! :(

Lissi I am so sorry. Poor Nadya...how is she feeling right now. I hate it when they have to get vaccinations. But I hate to be the bearer of bad news....it gets harder the older they get. (not sure if you have anymore children)Caleb has to go in a week or so to get his 4 month shots...I hate it and I too want to cry.

Lissi - November 17

She's my first baby, so everything's a new experience for me. I'll be so glad when this course of jabs is over and done with! I din't expect her to be that upset. How is Caleb today? Better?

Oh, poor Nadya!!! I also hate those stupid vaccinations! Although I'm sure not as much as babies do! Hopefully she'll be feeling better tomorrow! The injection site might be a bit sore for her right now! Gabriel also has to go for his 4 month shots next week! Then he starts a monthy routine of immunizations next month! (For atleast 5 months!!!)

We have to go on Sat. for round 2, and I'm hoping for the best. Last time it was not too bad, but not great either. Lissi in a month again? So soon! I thought it's every 2 months.

chelsey - November 17

They must be different in the UK. I think as long as there is a month between shots, then its okay to have them so soon. I have to wait until Gabe is over 4 months for his next series of immunizations, b/c the flu season has hit here in full force, and everyone is now scrambling to get their flu shots! So Gabriel has been bumped!

Lissi - November 17

Fortunately, she only has these ones at 2 months, then 3 months, then 4 months, and that's it until she's a year old. Will these be Gabriel's first vaccinations? Poor thing! I hate to do it for 5 months running! I felt really evil for putting Nadya through that. I'm glad she's had a whooping cough jab though. I suppose a day's worth of feeling c___p is better than that.

chelsey - November 17

No, Gabriel has had his 2 month shots already. Then next week is 4 months. I know, the poor little gaffer is just going to hate this winter b/c of all the needles! The monthly shot is for RSV. I'll probably chicken out after the second or third time, and say "NO MORE!"

Lissi - November 17

Hmmm...I'm not sure what RSV is. What does it stand for? These jabs are for diptheria, teta__s, whooping cough and polio. She had a BCG on the day she was born, but she had so many drugs in her system, that it didn't bother her. She only cried, because I had the nerve to dress her again afterwards! Wicked mother! Lol! She still hates getting dressed. I put some new pics of her on our site. She's a reall little smiler now. She won't smile today though :( Anyway, the site is http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/alimax/

I have to add, that in one photo, she's wearing an awful pink hat, that her Russian grandmother sent her. She sent a few ugly things, but I had to put a picture of her wearing it on the site, just to please her. Actually, Russians are usually brutally honest when they don't like a present, but I just can't overcome my Englishness, and told her they were gorgeous. Hehe!

chelsey - November 17

Nadya is sooo cute! She has such sweet smiles! Actually, I think she looks like Gabriel when he smiles! She's definately camera friendly! RSV can cause respiratory illness, and pneumonia in preemie babies. It affects like 2/3 of preemies. Apparently everyone gets RSV in the winter, but can cause serious illness in babies that were born premature and with low birthweight. Gabe had the same shots as Nadya, plus for Meningitis and HIB... can't remember, but there was a lot! Someone on this board even tried to tell me I was poisening Gabriel with all the immunizations!

When my son got his first needle he cried so much as if someone was killing him and eyes were looking at mine as if he was saying" HOw can you let this happen to me and please help!" By heart was so broken that me and my husband were crying too. Next time I bought Emla patches. Thier pricy but its worth it. I put one patch on each thigh and he never felt a thing. But when he saw the doctor he grunted at him. A bit off topic but on the first visit I gave him Tempera before he went for shots. He never developed a fever. But was cranky the whole day because he was upset from the shot. On the second shot I forgot to give Tempera before I went and he developed a fever afterwards.

Lissi - November 17

Oh yeah! HIB too. I forgot about that one. You'd never guess that Gabe was a preemie, by looking at him now! He's doing so well! I don't care what other people think about Vaccinations. I've have 4 elderly relatives in my family, who contracted Polio when they were kids. They've all had problems walking and one of them lost a leg! I never want to see my daughter suffer with whooping cough. It really is distressing! d- I've never heard of Emla patches or Tempera, but I'm going to find out if they're available here. Thanks for the info. :)

Heartbreaking isn't it Lissi? I always make my hubby go to the vaccination appointments. I stay in the room until the wicked shot lady comes in, then I go out to the waiting room. Once she's done, she comes to get me and I run back in to comfort my little one. Just a pointer (may have already been mentioned, but I don't have time to read all the replies) give Nadya some pain reliever (I give Tylenol) about 20 minutes before her shots, and again about 6 hours after to help relieve the discomfort. :o)

d - November 17

Tempera is similar to Tylenol its what babies take for fever. Emla is a patch that numbs the skin. Even some teenagers who are scared of needles use them before they get a needle so they don't feel it. But a nurse I know that takes blood in a clinic, says it shrinks the blood vessels and its harder for her to find a good vein for her to draw and get blood from the teenagers. Nevertheless, it does a great job in dumbing the skin and babies don't feel a thing when its time to get shots.

Lissi - November 17

Tiffani! Long time no see! How are you? How's your new little man?

CEM - November 17

Oh Lissi, I feel your pain!! It's terrible to see your baby in pain, let alone when you're an accomplice to it! Just remember that you've got your baby's best interests at heart. Definitely a good idea to keep some pain relief on hand, and of course, lots of TLC! Hi Tiffani - welcome to the infant care forum, finally! We've all been waiting for you! How is Dylan doing? How are YOU?
