Propping Bottles Bad

choking - December 9

means anything that partially or completely obstructs the airway, so yes, you can choke (though temporarily) on liquid. if liquid is in your airway, it is obstructed till you cough it out.

I think that one can get caught on the word "choking". When discussing choking, one must be clear on the exact meaning of the word. ----------------------------------------------- Oxford American Dictionary- choke- (1)to cause to stop breathing by squeezing or blocking the windpipe or by being unfit to breathe. (2) to be unable to breathe from such causes.------------------------------------- When you cannot breathe you cannot cough. Why? Because you need air in order to cough. You are not choking while coughing to clear your throat. You are just coughing to clear your throat. If something is partially blocking the airway, that means that there is still some air (even if it is very little) that is able to flow. That is where the coughing comes into play. There is a difference. ONE CANNOT COUGH IF THERE IS NO AIR! It is impossible! Try to cough without using any air whatsoever. That means pushing air out as well as inhaling it.

Your points are well taken, TC. So to clear up the semantic debate and to be on the same page, what do you call the coughing a__sociated with getting liquid in one's windpipe?

TC - December 9

Coughing.

Christy - December 9

TC- LOL! Yeah, I guess that covers it. :)

TC- BTW- what do you do for a living? Are you in healthcare as well?

TC - December 9

No, I am a early childhood teacher. NYC is really vigilant about childcare workers knowing about choking and all of that stuff. I am cpr certified. If I don't get it renewed I won't be allowed to work at my job.

Christy - December 9

TC- Cool. I am a physical therapist and most of my employers have required CPR certification as well.

You can totally prop if, for example, you are doing the dishes and she is in a carrier on the counter where you can see and hear her. I did it when I got totally behind and my little booger didn't want to do anything but eat. Good luck!

lisa - December 10

in my opinion, you should really feed your child yourself, a baby needs to feel you there, for me feeding is a special time, I b___stfeed though, i understand we never have time to do anything but if you have a child the least thing you can do is make tme to feed it, what about when it wants to play, will you just shove it infront of the tv???

TC - December 10

I agree with you Lisa about the bonding part. However, the original poster was not talking about doing it all of the. She was just talking about when she is getting dressed or needs to get something done. I think every once in awhile we Mommies need to multi-task.

momma - December 10

i have only propped bottles for a few seconds like to grab the phone when it rings stuff like that in the summer when it was really warm in the house i propped my dd in a boppy but held the bottle and still burped her as much as i do holding her

Narcissus - December 10

lisa, you need to take it so far to say we don't play with our kids, either? You must have 4 arms...I only have two. Sometimes, I need to prop!

karine - December 11

i think propping is ok, as long as your right beside, especially when you also have other children in the house. tha aslo need your attention. Its not robing time from your child. Espcially if your a fulltime mommy, and your ALWAYS with your child. If i were a working mom, then i wouldnt prop. as i would want to give my child all the time he needs. thats my two cents

Narcissus - December 11

Why do I talk about propping in the present tense?? My son has been holding his bottle since 4 months of age.

April - December 11

We NEED to get things done. We HAVE to do this or that. Give me a break. How often does a baby drink a bottle? Every three to four hours? I'm am b___stfeeding and when my guy is hungry everything stops, he gets fed and then the world continues. I have 2 children, a dog, laundry, no dishwasher and a husband. TC - We could call it drowning. Definition - To die by suffocation as a result of inhaling liquid, especially water, into the lungs.
