I am almost 35 wks w/my second baby. Have had some really painful contractions this weekend. Are Braxton Hicks supposed to be painful or just uncomfortable? One of my contractions was so painful it almost had me doubled over. It lasted about 5 seconds and then was gone.

contraction will last for at least 30seconds---5 is extreme. Could you be having tummy cramps? Is it shooting pains?

Smilefull,
The contraction lasted about 5 seconds. Not so much a shooting pain but more like a bad, menstrual cramp. I've had some more tonight. Are BH supposed to be painful?

i'm 40w tomorrow and most of my bh have just been the tightening. sometimes i get the bad cramp like pain like that real short & sweet but i've been told its just ligaments adjusting and everything 'settling into place' however i have also had what they call irritable uterus contractions, that are small frequent contractions. i only noticed them when i was hooked up to a NST, i never felt them. maybe that could be what these are and you are just a little more sensitive. i've heard that bh can be painful sometimes but mine always lasted longer too.

BH's are usually not painful but they can be. You could be in "prodromal" labour---that's what the nurses say I'm in---constant, regular painful contractions but NOTHING happening down there. It's caused by an irritable uterus. The short stabbing pains are most likely round ligament pains--as jules said, ligaments stretching to make pelvis open up for babe.
