I'm 38 wks, 2cm (as of a week ago) and half effaced. WHAT is a contraction? A cramp? A tight feeling? A burning feeling? I'm clueless. I've had all the above, and i'm afraid I won't know when labor is here! Also, where are they most likly to hit? Lower or upper abdomen? Please help!

well if you feel a sorta burning in your abdomen its prolly your ligments stretching (i had to ask someone about that cause i was feeling it near by belly b___ton) a contraction is when your whole abdomen tightens and gets hard they are mostly braxton hicks and some DO hurt a lil the REAL contractions (the ones that are actually doing somthing ) hurt so bad you can't talk or move when your having one. when your going into labor they will get closer and stronger, i'd suggest timing them, write down when they start and how long they last. they say if you have 10 within an hour that are consistent to call your doc and they will tell you if they think you should come in, seeing as how your 38wks they'll prolly send you in to be checked. though you can stay at 2cm for a while. last week i was check and i was 4cm and 90% effaced and i still havent had my baby, i'm 39weeks today. just try walking and having s_x...it will get things moving, and if your like me your tired of hear people tell you that you look like your about to explode. hope this helps and good luck

Hi, Labor to me was cramping just like when you are on your period with cramping I did not have any burning. And don't let anyone scare you because every person is different my labor pains and actual labor was not all that bad everyone always said oh it hurts like hell. Myself i did not think so labor to me was nothing it was all the after effects that i hated such as being sore and having st_tches but labor was breeze. don't get me wrong some people do have really bad labor but not everyone is the same. But your instincts will tell you when you are in labor. And if your not sure then go to the hospital anyway your better safe than sorry because when i actaully went into my third stage of labor it was minutes before i delivered. approx 15min pretty fast. good luck and enjoy your bundle of joy

Tara, were your contractions cramps up until you delivered?

Tara - January 5

Lissa, well i had cramping right up until i went into third stage labor then it was a little more painful, not that bad not like everyone makes it seem. Then i knew the baby was coming because it was pressure that you feel at that point. And alot of people state that it is like you need to have a bowel movement and honestly that is what it feels like. I only had to push 4 times and he was out and it was only 15min in labor actually delivering.. hope this helps and don;t let anyone scare you. People always make it sound worse.

Bethany, does your lower back hurt? I thought I was having gas pains but then my lower back started hurting when I had a cramp. Turns out I was in premature labor at 30 weeks because I was dehydrated. Drink lots of water!
