Dilation And Effacement

My doctor told me that I was 75% effaced (my cervix) and 1 cm dilated. What happens when I'm 100% effaced? Will I go into labor?

i don't know

Not sure...I am 75% effaced and 3.5 cm dilated...so I guess I have the same question...when is this baby coming out???

one thing i've learned is that dilation and effecament mean zilch unless you're in labor. with my last baby i walked around for over a month 75% effaced and 2 cm dilated. this time i'm not even going to be checked untill i'm in active labor.

Can you differentiate between dilation and effacement for me. Thanks

If you are 100% effaced the cervix is completely thinned out. If you are 1 cm dilated then your cervix opening is about the size of a cheerio. Whether you would have to go into labor, I doubt it. Maleficent is right, it really doens't mean anything until you are in active labor.

My doctor told me the same thing, but my question is if I get 100% effaced before dilating any further, does effacing make the dilation of the cervix quicker?

keyli - September 22

the cervix dialtes much faster when its thin.

MY doctor told me that my cervix was very soft and slightly open what does that mean?

I am 100% effaced and 1 cm dialated. So the answer to your question asking if you will go into labor would all depend on you. every pregnancy is different. I haven't yet but only time will tell when i do.. :)

first-time mom here...i am 1 cm dilated and have been for almost 2 weeks now. 39 weeks today and still counting...when is she coming out?

Lynn - October 23

For first time moms, you have to be completely effaced before your cervix will dilate to 10 cm. So you may be 3.5 cm and 75% and then 80% and then 90% but usually you reach 100% effacement befor eyou will dilate any further than 5 cm (learned in childbirth cla__s) but for second time moms, the process can happen simultaneously. So you may be 1cm and 0% and go into labor. either way, it doesn't tell you if/when you will go into labor, you can walk around like that for weeks.
