Okay I know when you get the epidural (sp?) they leave a thing...i dont know what its called...coming out of your back but how do they take it out after labor and does it hurt? And how long does it take for the epidural to wear off after labor?

It's just a catheter, and you don't feel it when it comes out. It's just like the IV in your arm. It took about 3-4 hours for the full effects of the epidural to wear off for me. Slowly I started feeling more and more. Good luck!

I agree. I didn't feel anything when they took it out...later that day I could feel maybe it was a little bruised, just like when you give blood through an IV. My epidural wore off much faster than Erin's though, mine wore off about an hour after, maybe even less, cause when they made me try to urinate...it stung pretty darn bad. As in Erin's thread...I would have one again, mine went great, but some women do have side effects...nothing life threatening, just uncomfortable. I had a little itching after so they gave me a shot of cortizone. I loved my epidural and be sure I'd do it again...maybe even sooner next time.

I didn't feel mine when it was taken out. Having the IV put in my arm hurt worse then the epidural going in. It was a little uncomfortable but not bad at all. The worse part for me was being scared and while I was bent forward I was sweating like crazy! I guess from being scared. The nurses started babying me after it was in because I was sweating so much. lol. I'd definitely recommend the epidural. I did have trouble after I got home. I was given a prescription pain medication and I did have some back pain from the epidural for a couple of weeks. It wasn't much pain at all. But one evening I forgot to take the pain med. and I had spasms going thru my back-it was bad enough to make me cry. But it did finally ease after a couple of minutes and my husband was practically shoving a painpill in my mouth by that time. lol. That's the only time that happened. And now my back feels fine. With my first child i just had the pain med thru the IV. And I felt every contraction! It was awful. I didn't feel a thing with the epidural until at the end right before I started pushing. That's when I felt pain in my pelvic area. It was pretty painful but it didn't last too long for me before I got to see my beautiful little boy for the first time! Good luck to you!

I had an epidural from about 4cm on. I pushed for 2 hours and then required a c-section. But the effects of the epidural wore off immediately for me. Once they wheeled me back to recovery, I could actually move myself (with some help) to the other bed. I would have an epidural again, although i do not want another c-section (not sure if the epidural had anything to do with it). By the time I started pushing the epi wore off (they had to top it off for the c-section).
