How well do they work?

I really wish someone would post in here because I am wondering the same thing. I'm 18, 7 weeks, 107lbs, 5'3"....I'm so scared of the labor part and would really like to know what all I can do to make it as comfortable as I can... THANKS! =)

Epidurals are a girl's best friend! I had an epidural with my first child after about 12 hours of labor. After the epidural, I was able to sleep and I could not tell I was having a contraction unless I looked at the monitor. It was great. When it came time to push (about 10 hours after I got the epidural), I could tell it was time, but still did not feel any pain. Getting the epidural allowed me to have much more energy to spend with the baby in the time after the delivery.

Mom of 2, an epidural is a catheter that stays in your back until after labor.

I had an epidural with my second, and it was nice, except one area on the right side of my pelvis never numbed, and I could feel the full intensity of the contractions there. It did, however, make the pushing stage much more pleasant.

i had to have 2. the first one was placed wrong and only worked on my left side and would wear off every 30 min on my right side so they redid it. by the time they did he second one i didnt even feel it, but i must have had problems accepting it bc they kept on having to give me more every 1.5 hours. and by the time it came to push i was in so much pain from the pressure of the baby bearing down in me that they couldnt do anything about it bc the epidural doesnt fix pressure pains, only contractions. so right before i started to push they gave me another dose and the guy said it was the last dose he could give so i pushed like there was no tommorrow to avoid any chance of it wearing off. needless to say it only took 30 min of pushing. but to avoid contraction pain they are WELL worth it.

3 hrs into labour i requested for it. the doc had to try to fit it in twice. after which she told me it takes a while to work. and when i toldher it still hurts, she told me not to confused pressure with pain. WTH!! So, needless to say, i was still screaming and pulling my darling husband's shirt screaming for help. (curiously, I could still wonder at that time how women can deliver c section with epidural!!) But one thing is true, when you panick it starts to hurt very much more. Then the nurse came in to check on me. turns out I am 10cm dilated but not effaced. So i felt a lot of pressure!! doc was called to come in immd. I was told to push anyway. half hr later, my doc came and sniped me there after proclaiming that the epidural was useless and gave me a regional shot to numb the saddle area.. 15 mins after doc arrived I had my boy in my arms!! So epidurals don't work on everyone. My mom had one when she was delivering me and guess what?? It didn't work too!!

I just had my baby on June 4th. My hospital staff was great. They believe in doing whatever the mother wants and I have a very low pain threshold so asked for epidural when I was 3 cm dialated. the anethesiologist was very experienced so he did a good job putting the epidural in place. I was completey numb from waste down but could still feel the pressure to push when it came down to it. it made the whole experience SO much better so instead of feeling the pain. I was able to REST before pushing, and able to concentrate more on pushing, and able to enjoy my beautiful daughter immediately afterwards with no pain to intefere. I highly recommend it. I know it doesn't work for some people.. but why not try? if it works, it works GREAT.. if it doesn't work.. you can try something else.

Iw oudl never ever have an epidural. With my 1st baby I had gas and air and with my 2nd I had nothing. After my 2nd was born it was brilliant. I could sit there and say I have experianced child birth with no pain relief at all. It is amazing how quick the labour is with nothing. I think pain relief slows it down. 5 hours after having my daughter I was back at home. That would never of happened if I had an epidural. I don't like needles at the best of times but for them to stick one in my spine. No thank you. If I was to ever need a section I would much rather be put to sleep than have a spinal block.

I just had my first baby at the age of 17. I as well am very small, 103. However, I had the epidural which did not even compare to the pain of contractions. Actually, the IV hurt worse than the epidural. I slept through the entire labor not feeling a thing. I woke up they told me to push and with in 15 min. I had my baby with absolutely no pain. GET THE EPIDURAL!!!

Oh my gosh, you all have helped me so much... I was terrified to go into labor, but now, knowing how much an epidural can (and probably will) help, I will definately get it and I'm not as scared... which is great! Thanks!!! =)
