Gel Induction

HI - I am being induced on Wednesday evening with gel. My question is why do I need gel if I am already 3cm 80% effaced? why wouldn't I go straight to pitocin?

I've been induced 3 times with gel and its generally set me off very quickly - even when once I was just short of being 36 weeks and probably no-where near ready to deliver...But if you're already 3cm 80% it will maybe kick start you quickly and painlessly..I've heard a lot of people say pitocin can make for painful contarctions??

Trust me if they started you on pitocin right away you would not be a very happy camper for long - pitocin really intensifies contractions.....gel is the less intense way to start - if that works out well you may not need pitocin at all.....

Thanks ladies, I have had a pitocin induction before. ( i didn't mind it per say) But I was wondering why I would have to use gel first this time? Should I plan on staying Wednesday night? I was gonna drive my self they say I should only be there for 2 to 3 hours and then I can go home. ( I am to return the next morning for pitocin) But since I am so far ahead of the game dilatation wise could I go into labor from the gel? I must have scored low on my bishop score because I am still really posterior and baby is -2 but this is my third pregnancy? I am confused. I failed my NST on friday and had to go to the hospital and I just asked the Resident and he wasn't sure why I needed gel first either. Not that I put much stock in Residents!! LOL Any help is appreciated thanks in advance

I hate to say it but my 3rd was my longest labour - 3 hours lol! - but I was over my dates too...I would think you just need a little kick-start,, hence the gel and you'll be flying on before you know it...Lucky you to get to go home after the gel...here in the UK they make you stay, and won't use the gel last thing at night at all!! I guess it depends how far you are from the hospital and how quick your previous labours were....

Well I never got the gel I was bumped for gel and induction. I did however have my membranes stripped the morning of my induction. That was at 10am I gave birth at 9:58pm the same day to a lovely 8lbs 9oz baby boy!!
