Is Your Mom S Experience A Good Indication

...Is your mom's experience and her mom's experience a good indication of what yours will be like? My mother says nothing bad about it at all, that the contractions almost felt GOOD to her and she had an epidural only for the last hour and it all took or felt like only a few hours total. I may be in for a big surprise, and I've been open-mindedly listening to everyone I can about what labor contractions and pushing feels like...I'm afraid to have an epidural and may welcome other pain relief, but is there anyone out there that can say contractions and labor ISN'T that painful? I have what I like to believe as a pretty high threshold for pain. Anybody out there with a very easy labor and delivery??????

Unfortunately your mothers/grandmothers experience means little when it comes to yours!! With my first I didn't even register I was in labour, I went to the hospital due to slight bleeding (I was 34weeks) and they found me 6cms with my waters gone! No pain med and I delivered him a few hours later. With my second I laboured for two days, his heart rate dropped to 60BPM, they threatened a c-section, I was in agony, had no pain meds and once he turned I delivered him an hour after they broke my water when I was 4cms. My third I delivered at 37weeks (induced due to cholestasis) and used only Gas&Air once I hit 7-8cms and until them I had no pain med. Apart from my second I didn't believe my first or third labour was particularly painful and am looking forward to how my fourth will go. I have been warned though to expect a quick labour as they have all been relatively quick - my second although I was contracting for two days I didn't dilate. Once they broke my waters I went from 4cm to complete on one contraction! Good luck and if you use the idea that the contractions can only get worse the pain just never seems to get that bad. I know that might sound silly but if you feel the first pain and immediately panic the pains will feel a whole lot worse than they maybe are! Good luck!

Yeah I agree with Tory. My mother had to have 2 C-sections, one with me, and one with my older brother.
I went through labor nice and easy with my first child, second one on the way and hope its as pleasant.

And also, when I went through labor, sure the pain hurt, not going to deny that, but I went through without meds, and I think I have a high pain tolerance. Honestly, all the hype about it, and it wasn't that bad for me. But everyone's labor and deliver is different. Good luck!

With my mom, both myself and my brother, her labors were really short and no drugs. She said with me it was 2 hours and with my brother she had 1 contraction and he came out after 1 hour of labor. With me, i started getting contractions at 8 pm and I had my boy at 10:37 pm. I pushed for an hour and 10 minutes out of that.. *lol* I had no epidural, I wanted one, but now I am glad that I didn't get it. The pain is manageable. Just remember to breathe, when you are pushing, push like you're going to poo (you probably will too... hehe, i did, i think).. For me, contractions were coming in waves and I could prepare myself and when you are pushing try to think about pushing rather than pain of contractions. My boy had a HUGE head *lol*, but luckily I didn't tear and recovery was very fast. So I would say my labor and delivery were pretty easy.. Breastfeeding on the other hand... hehe.. painful for a month...

Sorry, but no. My mother went into labor naturally with my oldest sister. She went to 10cm and ended up having a c-section. 23 hours of labor for a c-section. lol. With my firstborn, I had to be induced, had a natural birth, no problem and was in labor for only 4 1/2 hours. Very different labors. Every single one is different.

Oh and I forgot to mention. When I had my son, I was very afraid of labor and the pain. But I can't honestly say I was in excruciating pain. I really surprised myself completely.

I believe every labour is different, and depends on the individual. My g.mother had 3 kids. the 1st 2 births werent painless but manageable, but the 3rd was unbearable. my nans says she didnt believe that you could actually experience pain like it!!. My mother on the other hand had a bad labour with me and it lasted 72 hrs from to start to finish and had all the pain relief goin, my younger sister didnt want to come out at all, 14 days overdue, and mums was rushed for a c section as the cord was around her next. But in my case I had a fantastic labour. Slight period pains, then I had a dip in the bath and thought mayb my waters broke. Spoke to my midwife and went straight to the hospital, only to be told we will probaly send you home as you have had the runs you may have a stomach bug. this was at 4.30am. I was examined immediately and told that I was 10cm dilated.and 5.27am my daughter arrived. THATS THE WAY TO DO IT!! Hope its similar if not better for you. GOOD LUCK!!
