Hi, luckily some other women have asked my epidural questions...but for those of you who have had children before..what is the healing/pain like for the perineum after giving birth? Esp from those of you who had tearing- my mom tore with all 4 :( so I probably will too Im thinking. How do you pee with sitches down there, esp right after delivery?? OW! How long before you felt normal or could have s_x again? Did your 6 week checkup hurt like h__l? Im such a wuss with pain! Do episiotomy scars actually SCAR or do they tend to heal up completely like incisions made in the mouth? And finally, in your opinion, is episiotomy or tearing better?? Thanks!

I delivered in December and had an episiotomy. TO be honest I was very uncomfortable from it, I was swollen and sitting upright irritated it a lot but they gave me pain meds and it only lasted a few days. I was most scared of that first bowel movement and even with stool softeners hurt like hell. As far as peeing after, they tell you not to wipe and gave me a squirt bottle to rinse off real well and they gave cold and hot compresses to help comfort the area. People say different things about tearing vs. the epis. I think that a lot of doctors cut before they need to because its easier for them, so I asked that he not unless it was necessary. My little guy got stuck and they had to vacuum him out so he cut. I don't think there's a scar but who's going to see it?? I had s_x 3.5 weeks post birth and it was a little uncomfortable and I bled a little but I was stil bleeding a little anyway. Don't worry about it. Oh yeah and the 6 week check up was not painful, I was completely healed by then. Good luck!

This will be my fourth birth. I tore clear down to my b___t with my second baby. I was st_tched, but you can't see a scar. You are going to feel so uch lighter, and better once the baby is out, the discomfort will be miniscual. Good luck.

I also delivered in Dec. I had a second degree tear. My baby was 8 pounds. It wasn't that bad. I was sore, but not in terrible pain or anything. I was uncomfortable sitting on a hard surface and itchy! When you begin to heal it will itch. Honestly I had more pain from the hemorriods I got from pushing my baby out than from my tear. It didn't hurt for me to pee. They will give you a peribottle to squirt warm water on yourself as you are peeing. It feels great. I used my bottle for about 3 weeks, also it helps to keep you clean with all the discharge you will have. I had my 6 wk postpartum check today and it was no more uncomfortable than it usually is. I was able to have s_x at 3 wks post partum. again it was uncomfortable but not painful. Just use lubricate and go slow. This was my first baby and honestly nothing was as bad as what I was expecting. and like Erika said it feels so good to have that weight and pressure off of you after you have the baby. Oh and I don't think you can see any scar from the episiotomy or tear.

klm - wow 3.5 weeks with an episiotomy! I was so afraid to do anything down there for so long. This time I was natural, and am still scared of s_x at 4 weeks. With the epsiotomy I felt normal after the six weeks, and I asked my husband if I have a scar, and he says he has never noticed one.

I tore when i had my 1st daughter and i found it to be very painful. It was swollen and i even found that walking really made it ache and sting. I found having salyt baths to be very soothing. That was 3 1/2 years ago and occasionally during or after s_x i will start to hurt right where my st_tches were. I didnt have st_tches after i had my 2nd daughter or my son, the midwifes said i tore a tiny bit but now enough to warrant st_tching.

when i had my son i didn't tear, thank god, but here they don't like giving episiotomy's because you have a higher chance of tearing that more then if you didn't have it done at all. i mean think about it, if you tug on a peice it won't tear until a surtain point, but if you already have a tear in it, it will rip apart... i waited until the bleeding stopped until i had s_x... and even then it was a slow process of making sure everything will be ok.

I delivered in August and I had a 3rd degree tear. They told me it was better to tear b/c the tissue has not been cut straight across, and the fibres can rejoion more easily. Whatever....it hurt like hell! I was really sore for about 4 days, then it started getting better. By my 6 week appointment, it felt SO much better, and wasn't painful. We held off until 8 weeks to have s_x (I got sick), and it was a little bit painful, but gets better everytime. I do have a scar....but who's going to see it besides my husband and when I get waxed?? I'm not really concerned. Good luck to you!!!

Had epi and a C - January 21

Hi, I had a v____al birth with an episiotomy to my rectum which was quite tender for about a week...completely painfree and healed by 2-3 weeks. Second baby I had to have a c due to breech baby, the episiotomy was NOTHING compared to the c-section pain! Peeing hurt because they had put a catheter in for surgery, taking a BM was nearly impossible because my stomach muscles wouldn't let me even try to push, like they were preventing me from hurting them! The pain and exhaustion from the c-section took much longer to go away. I don't know about a natural tear, and I don't think I have a scar down below too, at least hubby hasn't mentioned one.
