It does not hurt when your water breaks. It can either break on its own or the doctor will break it. It just feels like you are peeing yourself nothing different.

This is copied from my answer in "labour procedure"
In about 15% of pregnancies the water breaks before labor or on the onset of labor. The rest of the time it either breaks naturaly at the hospital when you are in labor(the force of the contractions make it "pop") or the doctor will break it for you. It does not hurt! My water broke before labor with my first baby and it felt like all the blood fell out of my body:) lol It didn't hurt but I felt a little woozie for a sec or two. With my second baby the doctor broke it at the hospital when I was at 3cm because my labor had slowed. The doctor used what looked like a hook on a stick:) I didn't feel a thing! =

I heard from my cousin who just had a baby a month ago that the doctor broke her water and it was the most painful part of the labor. I don't know about it breaking on it's own though.

I think if the Dr breaks your water it can hurt but doesn't mean it will. My best friend said with her first 2 it never hurt but with her 3rd, it was the most painful part for her. My water broke on it's own and I honestly thought I was just peeing on myself, no pain at all!

It does not hurt, but you will KNOW when it breaks or should I say when it springs a leak. It will feel warm like pee and more like a trickle as opposed to a large water balloon hitting the cement, but you can't "pinch the penny" to make it stop, it just keeps on coming.

When someone says it hurt when their water was broken by the doctor, they have to be talking about the same pain you get when they check you durring a contraction. Maybe if the plastic "crochet hook" they use brushes up against the cervix it might cause pain, but there are no nerves in the actual membrane to cause you pain. I had one break on it's own and one broken by the doctor. Other than the big gush when the doc broke it, I felt nothing.

it CAN"T hurt because there's no nerves on the amniotic sac. I had an ARM (artificial rupture of membrane) and I didn't feel a thing.
