At my 39 week appt, my dr asked if I would like to be induced at 40 weeks, if I'm still pregnant then. I declined, because I am too scared of induction. I just wondered when others were given the option of "choosing" induction and when/if they took, or plan to take, the opportunity?

Hi Katherine,
I agree with you for turning it down. Most doctors do not give you the option of inducing until at least six or seven days past due. This is because the due date is really just an estimate and if your periods were irregular then the due date that you were given may not be the actual due date. Also, you don't have worry about anything until you are about two weeks past due when the placenta stops functioning properly. As long as your little one is o.k in there then you can give him/her a little time to come out when he/she is ready. I would take the opportunity about 6 or 7 days past due. Then you can be almost 100% sure that your baby's lungs are ready. Good luck!

Well, we went in yesterday for the 40 week appt. I was leabing toward going for it (you know, sick of being pregnant, on the edge of labor for over a week, etc.), But, we had a non-stress test and ultrasound and everything looked good and I haven't made any progress, so we decided to wait it out. My dr gave me an appt in 1/2 a week, instead of making me wait a week, though, so we can see how things are going then and what we want to do. I suppose I'll try to wait until at least 41 weeks, as long as everything is going well. I was surprised she offered the option so early, though. But, she seems to be supportive of our decision to wait.

I don't see what the problem is with inductions. I was scheduled for an induction with my last child, but my water broke 3 days before. This is my second pregnancy and my doctor has already said she would induce me. I am happy about the decision, I don't think my body can handle being pregnant much longer. I have already dilated 3.5 cm and I think I am progressing, and induction would only speed up the process. What is the big deal?

Induction can just lead to other medical interventions, so I'm concerned about that. Also, I guess I want to make sure the baby is really ready to come out before forcing the issue.

Hi....I'm glad you asked, b/c my doc wants to induce me on Tuesday-a week before my due date, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. I have to give them a decision by Monday morning. I am at 3cm 50% effaced, but I am a little scared about it all...anymore advice for Katharine and I? I want to hear the good the bad and the ugly !! Thanks and good luck Katharine

Well, she got out, and quickly, but the labor was more intense. I just had my water broken, but didn't have any pitocin. I don't think I would do it unless I was already making some progress. I can't imagine going from nothing to delivery so quickly. I did find out, though, that my dr left on vacation the day after my induction : )

I was induced and I would not do it again if given the choice. I think it would be okay if you are already showing progress on your own. It'll just boost it a little bit. I almost had to have a c-section because I had to push for so long. Who's to say what would have happened if I wasn't induced. I think people should do what feels best for them. I was induced because my BP kept spiking really high. I had been on bed rest for a week and was 4 days past my due date when given the choice. I believe it made my delivery much harder but if I had waited and my BP went up again, I or the baby could have been in danger. I'm glad you didn't have to be induced Katherine. My sister did the same thing with both of her deliveries (had her water broken) and her labors were a breeze compared to mine.
