Why Do Contractions Stop

I am at 40 weeks and started getting contractions yesterday around 1 am. By 9 pm that night, they were less than 5 minutes apart and I couldn't talk through them. So we went to the hospital thinking this was it. Upon examination, I was barely 2 cm dialated and my cervix was still thick (the same as it had been at my check-up the day before). So despite all the contractions, my body wasn't progressing. I was given some medicine to take the edge of the contractions and that caused the contactions to get farther apart to every 10 minutes. With nothing left to do and me not being in any pain, we decided to go home at 3am and get a good night's sleep. Now it is almost 24 hours later and I am having no contractions at all. Isn't that weird? Why would I be so close to labor one day and then nothing the next? Has anyone had a similar experience? I know my baby will come when she's ready, but at this point I'm concerned that I will have a hard time dialating and will have to have a c-section.
