Does Castor Oil Really Work

The first day with the castor oil omelette did nothing! I didn't even end up running to the bathroom so I tried again yesterday taking 3 Tbs of the nasty oil straight. The stuff tastes like eating a tube of cheap lipstick! Yuck. Took it at 11:30 and found myself running to the bathroom from 1:00 to almost 4:00. I had 4 or 5 light contractions. Nothing to get excited about. Guess he's just not ready to come out yet. Can't make a baby do anything they don't want to. Overall not a bad experience. Might try again in a week or so.

I am 39 weeks and I tried castor oil last night, I do not recommend this to anyone. I know people that it has worked for and they went into labor a few hours later... but for the people it doesn't work for (like me) it is terrible. I got horrible diearea, and almost felt like I was going to die. I had contractions that went along with the cramping of my intestines but they didn't put me into labor just grief. My body is absolutly exhausted today and my pelvic mussels feel like they are torn to shreds (same with my other areas).

Castor oil, enemas, fresh pineapple, spicy foods, s_x, nipple stimulation, evening primrose oil and walking... these are all natural ways of inducing labor, but they are also very "hit & miss". The conditions have to be just right in order for any of these to really work, but I think if I had to choose, I would much rather try the ones that don't result in painful diarreah first. That may very well be exactly what it's going to take in order to jump start things, but I wouldn't want to risk the embarra__sment of c___pping all over myself, the doctor and the baby in order to accomplish it. That's just me, though. This is really a personal decision that only you can make. Just make sure that it's an informed decision and that you are not only aware, but also prepared for any negative drawbacks these different remedies may have before you try them. Some of the methods I mentioned earlier such as walking and having s_x, don't produce any ill symptoms and are considered perfectly safe and every bit as effective, just so long as your caregiver has not placed you on any type of restrictions. Good luck!

Hi Joanne, I'm 2 days overdue and have been having bhs for 12 days 10 mins apart all day every day, this is my fourth pregnancy, we contemplated castor oil but our midwife advised against it because although in many cases it can do nothing if it does work it can make your labour very fast and cause the baby distress, aswell as giving you the runs and cramps (why hurry the cramps? contractions are bad enough!) I tried it with my first pregnancy and didn't get the desired result. You've waited this long the end is near so have lots of pampering and read some good books. The more relaxed you can be the more likely things will go well.

I bought a little bottle of it with my last pregnancy. I drank the whole thing in a 3 hour period. Get this.....NOTHING happened at all. I didn't even get diareah which is the intended use for castor oil. All I got was an upset stomach cause that stuff tastes TERRIBLE. If you are ready, you're ready. Nothing other than baby being ready or medically being induced by a dr. is going to put you into labour.

It worked for my mother, myself, my oldest daughter and many of my friends. It worked for my last two pregnancies, but I was 6 days late with one, and a day before my due date with the other. I would not recommend taking castor oil anytime too soon before it's due date. 2 Tablespoons each time did it for me, and I was always dialated 1-2 cm, and 80 effaced when I took it. My sister and my daughter took it 2 1/2 weeks before due date, and had horrible painful labor with diareah before delivering baby.

I would not wish it on my worst enemy! i took it w/ my 1st, and now on my 5th and would just suffer being overdue. I was on the toilet w/ excruating pain and a trash can in front of me (from the feel it left in my mouth and on the way down!) I had the worst diarreha and vomiting and still no baby, walked around for about a month dialated to 2-3 and had to be induced at 41.5 weeks. It may work for some but I will definitely would NOT do it again. Soooo gross just thinking about it. Hope my opinion helps!!!!

I can't get over the fact that so many people are willing to put thier baby at risk by drinking this c___p. Why can't ya'll let nature take its course?

One nurse todl me the theory why this stuff sometimes works is that it clears your body of waste making room for the baby to drop. She would not recommend it because it can put the baby in danger and gives horrible runs, but rather suggest you eat plenty of fiber and make sure you are very regular.

My body is ready (dialated and effaced), the baby is low, and I am full term. But I dont have any castor oil around the house right now.... I heard that using a little bit of vegetable oil does the same thing....is this true? Thanks- Id really appreciate an answer! : )

Castor oil didn't work for me. I tried it with my last pregnancy....didn't do anything at all (not even the runs) I am desperate again and I've tried it twice now with this pregnancy (trying to avoid medical induction) and same results.....NOTHING happens to me at all. And I would welcome pooping right now...*lol* lovely constipation that comes with pregnancy. Castor Oil just tastes HORRIBLE and makes you feel sick to your stomach. I've read that you can use Metamucil (sp) cause it should help stimulate your bowels...and that's all you want....cause that is supposed to stimulate the uterus to contract. Good lcuk if you decide to take it....just remember....it's not a magic potion and much more of a "wives tale" than anything else. When it's time...it's time. Or if you are like me you'll have to be induced. This is my third baby and I am probably going to be induced again! (I was due may 3rd)

i am nearly 39 weeks i tried castor oil took 2 teaspoons with orange juice 1st but then read something and dont think i took enough so had another table spoon of it with OJ it did make me go to the toilet but nothing to bad..... I woke up the next morning at 7am (yesturday) with terrible back pains and tightenings in my tummy so i got excited thinking something was happening but then it eased off :-( so took some more at 3pm that day but still nothing as yet i still have terrible back pains but not regular contractions. saw midwife today and she thinks i could be in slow labour? I took some more about half an hour ago just waiting now? but after this lot im not takeing any more cause obviously im not ready if it doesnt work this time. But i havent had the runs bad so maybe thats why?

Hey y'all! Well I posted on here a few posts back (above)- and now my baby girl is 3 months old! Shortly after posting, I went and took castor oil (but I didnt have any other liquids around- so I had to mix with chocolate soymilk...yuck! hehe.) I took 1/2 with 8 oz. of soy, waited an hour (took a shower and rubbed oil on belly,) then the rest with 8 oz. Then I went to bed. Now, keep in mind- I was full term, and had been dialated to 5 cm. for two weeks!!! I was miserable... Around 3 am. I felt weird "downstairs", so I kept getting up all night- feeling mini gushes, but not much. Around 5 am I went and said to hubby "my water might be breaking" and JUST as I did- it broke all over my legs! We went to the hospital, and needless to say....I now have a baby! The castor oil seemed to help with me- but I think because I was already ready. It did stimulate my contractions more- but who knows.... I also got an upset stomach, and was in the bathroom for the beginning part of my labor (both at home and at hospital.) It was not fun! Really bad upset- but I didnt mind, becaues once I went into actual labor, I didnt have to worry about the dread bathroom on the table ordeal... Anyways, be careful ladies, and only do what feels right to you! : )
