Castor Oil is/can be used as a powerful and some times painful laxative. Its very old fashioned - taking a small dosage supposedly encourages contractions, but as far as I know it has not been researched I am going back on the raspberry leaf tea. Just got back from midwife - the head has moved down - so hopefully not much longer.

Okay UPDATE: at about midnight I woke and sat on the toilet for 1 1/2 hrs, very bad diarrhia and cramps, then finially after that was all said and done I did have some contractions, but no labor and no baby.

can you use mineral oil instead of castor oil

I think it only works when your body is ready for labor...i took 2 oz at 37 weeks, pooped a few times, cramped, contracted and I am now 38+2!!! S_x works better in my opinion, i went to the hospital on saturday for decreased fetal movement, i was 1cm and maybe 20% effaced....the nurse told me to have s_x two times a day until my next appt. which was 3 days later...as uncomfortable as it was, we did it, and i ended being 2cm and 50%, so at least i had some progress, which is more than I can say for the castor oil...my ob "stripped" my membranes on tuesday, and i have had some spotting and cramping since then, if i am 3cm and 75% on tuesday, they will induce me...the baby is over 8 pounds at this point!!!! wish me luck...and good luck to all of you who are ready and waiting!!!!!

I took it with my son and it caused him to have a bowel movement before he was born. I would NEVER take it again. It also caused me to make a huge mess on the delivery table. I had a horrible reaction to it.

Also.......I wasn't over due nor was I early. I was 40 weeks. It was the worst thing I have ever gone through. They took my baby away to get him cleaned before he took a breath. There was a special team of doctors in the room. Trust the nurse. She knows what she is talking about.

I am due for my second child December 27th but because I have type 1 diabetes (before pregnancy) they want to give me another c-section as my first was delivered that way. I really want to experience labour and wanted to try castor oil just before my c-section is due at 38weeks. Alot of people have said thay've used it but not many people have said at how many weeks they used it. So if anyone has used castor oil at 38 week sucessfully I would like to know. Thank you.

First of all i can understand the lady at 37 weeks with symphis pubis disfuntion wanting to bring on labour, as i have it too and it's extremely painful, but the other lady who is not due yet wanting to bring on labour,i think it's disgraceful that you would take such a risk if your baby clearly is not ready to be born, i'm sure i'll get my head bitten off for saying that. Anyway i am 3 days overdue and i just took castor oil about an hour ago, i had the runs once, and i am getting contractions at the moment, but they are not causing me any major pain so just waiting for them to progress.

I only have 2 days till my due date and believe me I know about wanting to have the baby asap, but I think that you should just wait it out and let nature take care of its self. the most you can go over is 2 weeks and whats that youve been pregnant for 9 months already. I cant say that I havent thought about drinking Castor oil but why take the risk you'll have the baby when the baby is ready, as far as walking its good for you so walk alot. Ive also heard it makes delivary easier.

it worked for me but not until the 40th week of my last 2 pg. never before then. and your cervix has to be soft.

Mez - September 17

It worked!!!! Well at least i think it was the castor oil. I am now the proud mum to a baby girl! Born at 39 wks and 5days.
