Epidural Question

Okay, this might sound like a really stupid question but here it goes, when you get an epidural , you can not feel anything from the waist down , so how do you know when you have to go to the bathroom? It is easy to have an accident? Does the nurse check your bladder? or what?

They will usually insert a catheter.

Sometimes they insert a catheter. Which you will not feel because you'll be numb, but not always. I had they epidural and I didn't have a catheter. They kept putting those bed pads under my behind and changing them when they got dirty. Not meaning to sound gross, but wether you have the epi or not stuff will come out of you in labor. You dribble pee and poo when you are pushing. Plus blood and fluids. It's just a part of the process. If it helps I was Soooo freaked out about pooing on the table in labor, but once I was in the middle of pushing I couldn't have cared less. My nurse made me feel better about it she would say poo is good it means your pushing effectively. She said if poo doesn't come out than you aren't pushing correctely. After I had the baby they catherized to empty my bladder, by the time I was cleaned up and in my postpartum room I could feel when I had to go, and go to the bathroom by myself.

For both my deliveries with an epidural they put a catheter in ( a tube to drain your urine directly from you to a bag). It was great because I didn't have to worry. And, yes, Grantsmom is right - you will most likey have some other fluids coming out of you during labor but that is totally normal. I asked my hubby if it was gross watching the whole thing and he said "not at all because it was for such a great cause! " Good luck to you.
