Hi THere -- well...if your water breaks in a gush... I promise you will know! It will feel and look like a water balloon broke, and there will be a lot of fluid. If it trickles...its harder to tell... basically though...its like you're peeing yourself every so often in small amounts, and its not pee. You cannot control it. It smells like the cleaner COMET or sweet, some say like a man's s____n. If you lie down, then stand up... it might trikcle or gush a bit more. If you need a pad to absorb the flow... you'll know. If you're not sure... the OB can do a test to find out. They like contractions to begin within a few hours of water breaking... if they don't... say within 24-48 hours...they are likely to induce in order to decrease the risk of infection. HOpe this helps.

I have had my water break with both of my pregnancies. With my son it was a gush and you can tell. It was like wrightofway said ... like a waterballon popped... Contractions did come but it took about 15 mintues... With my daughter my it trickled. I bent down to bathe my son and it came out... I thought I had peed on myself at first till I bent down again and I could not control it.... it just kept Trickling.... Again my contractions started within about 15 mintues.... Good luck... And I promise you you will know when your water breaks....

With my first baby I didn;t know my waters had broken - I a__sume it was in the toilet when I went before bed (I was 34wks and not expecting labour). I had had cramps all day and I was restless but this was nothing new but when the contractions hit was after getting off the toilet and walking into my bedroom. With my second the hospital roke them for me and it was a sudden gush. Wih the third they broke them again due to a medical induction due to cholestasis and they just kept trickling as he was so high(37wks). That was very weird. Usually though you will know if your waters break but it isn't guaranteed.

Mine broke on their own well into labor. I thought it was the baby's head coming out and then "pop" and gush........

My water broke after I had already started labor, both times I felt a little pop and then a warm trickle.. after that the contractions got alot more intense. With my 1st I had a leak and the doctor decided to break them the rest of the way, it was a gush you would not believe so you would definatley know if it just burst.

Mine broke 2 days into my 3 day labour and believe me you'll know! It was more than a gush and it felt like it wasn't going to stop. The quicker I mopped it up the more it came running out. I tried to get changed and ended up soling the new underwear in seconds, even with a huge pad.
So, I decided not to worry about it and forgot about bothering to wear underwear and just let it all happen.....

I've had four babies, pregnant now with fifth. First baby waters were broken with a huge contraction about 3 hours after labour began. Second son, waters were artifically ruptured around 2 hours after labour began. I was 10 cm dialted when I got to the hospital, but couldn't break my waters by pushing, so they broke them and he was born 20 minutes later...I thought I had it good with our DD and thought that because I'd been told I had strong membranes, and regardless of how fast my other labours had been (5.5hrs and 2 hours) that she wouldn't be born until we'd gotten to the hospital. She was born in our car in the carpark of the hospital in 45 mintues. I felt my waters break about 30 minutes after the contractions started and they went all over the seat! (along with everything else that came out when she was born!) but they gushed out twice...with our last child born here at home with DH delivering, a 25 minute labour, waters broke literally 2 minutes before he was born. This time, I'm wondering what will happen...I've never experienced the trickling or at least being prepared by waters breaking first. I was expecting that with my first...but have never gotten a breather in! Who knows what will happen in your experience? It'll be unique! GL
