Ive had two now. one on Wed, which didnt hurt abit. I then had another on Fri and the midwife did say she'd be more brutal, and belive me that one was uncomfotable. I went home and started spotting, i then got quite regular pains but decided to sleep on it. I wish i hadn't. When i woke up pain was gone! Im gutted, now they'll be inducing me tomorrow. I really wanted to avoid that. Hoping to get another sweep done today. Its fustating but i do think it would have worked, well worth any discomfort the midwife causes ive been induced before and thats the horrid bit for me! Ill post again if a 3rd one works. Some babies are stubborn, this is my second im 3cm and fully effaced but its not budging!

Why are my nucles so painful?

Beth - July 5

At my 38 wk. visit, one of the doctors in the group said he stripped my membranes during my exam, but I didn't feel anything remotely painful. If he did what he said, it didn't hurt a bit. I have another visit on Tues. (will be 8 days till dd) and I'm seeing another doctor in the practice, so I am going to have him sweep my membranes again. To Sabrina, if you are close enough to your due date and there are no complications, you should be able to have your membranes swept with no problem. From what I have heard, a lot of doctors will do them in the last month of preg. as long as everything is ok.

I am due in 5 days and had my doctors appointment today. They did a membrane sweep it didn't hurt a bit no spotting or anything. I was surprised because during my first internal I bled so much. Go figure... I hope this moves things along...

I have no clue about this, so I guess my response is also a question to you ladies out there that have had this done... (1) seems to me that a membrane sweep would hurt more if you were less dilated as opposed to more dilated and more room for their fingers to sweep... (2) seems also like it would be very similar to a regular internal exam where they are checking for dilation, effacement, station, etc....PLEASE CONFIRM

I am due to have a membrane sweep in 2 days time and feel a bit worried about it. I must say that the comments about being 'raped by an elephant' are totally disgusting and shouldn't have been put on this site. Us mum's to be need to hear the truth but not put in such a horrible way.

Sam and overdue bump! - September 9

Hi I'm 3 days overdue and have had 2 membrane sweeps! To be honest the best advice i can give is to relax!!! If you are tense it feels like when you tenses up when a man is trying to enter you! The first was awful I didnt know what to expect so i was extremely tense, and the couldn't reach! So she only walked the cervix forward. The second one Which was on tuesday, i was so relaxed because i knew what to expect she managed to easily perform a membrane sweep and i was 2cm dilated! God knows what i am now though ive had a few contractions and ive been drinking rasberry leaf tea (YUK) and tried castor oil, the midwife advised me not to use castor oil but to take 10ml of lactoluse twice a day. (its a mild form of laxative) I hope this helps you all if you want to email me then my adress is samantha_stoker@yahoo.co.uk luv sam and bump xx

Membrane sweeps dont hurt at all as long as you relax.

I am about to have a sweep tomoorow at 41 weeks and am now in a complete state because of the 'elephant' comments. Would be nice if people in our situation supported one another!!!

Lauren - September 19

Just did mine today and you can feel a slight stretching feeling which can hurt a little but nothing to worry about at all. The little bit of pain if you do feel any goes away as soon as the doctor is done.

I went to the doctor today but I didnt see my regular doctor cuz he wasnt there...but she told me if I did he would have stripped my membranes..but im scheduled to see him on monday...on friday they told me i was dilated to a 1 and 75% effaced and today i was almost to a 3 and 80% effaced..and i'll be 36 weeks tomorrow...What is their reason for stripping the membranes??

leanne - September 22

my doctor told me she couldnt do the membrane sweep cuz i was 2 cms dilated... is this a load of bull or what

Cait - September 23

I want 2 go into labour naturally as hated induction last time. My dr. suggested a memb. sweep and as i know little about it i' a tad nervous. Imust say though that reading the replies so many of you gave has helped put my mind at rest so THANK YOU!! But what about u negative fear inducing idiots? We all want honesty but surely we're all in the same boat and need some comfort not extra stress. At least ur in the minority and i'd recommend u keep such negative thoughts 2 urself as they can do no one any good!
