When I showed up to be induced with my first I was having contractions 1-2 minutes apart and didn't feel them. So its different for everyone.

They normally don't start out painful. It's not like you see in the movies.

i started having contractions at 11:30am every 5 minutes apart and they didnt start to hurt until about 3:30pm that same day. I go to the hospital at 4:20pm and by about 6pm, they were unbarable and were 2 minutes apart. They gave me a shot to try to stop the contractions because I was only 34 weeks along and sent me home at 10:30 that night. At 2am, I was crying uncontrollably because of the contractions every 2 minutes.
With my first though, i went from smiling one minute to screaming at the nurses and my boyfriend. Everyones pregnancy is different

Same with me. I was ok one minute and the next everyone had to leave the room. I think it was after they checked to see how far I was dialated. I think it put my labor into high gear.
But in the beginning it felt like period cramps, not anything too intense.
