7 Weeks Pregnant Empty Sac

I'm very confused by all this now! Today I am supposed to be 8 weeks pregnant, and we went in for our first ultrasound. The doc couldn't find the baby, only the empty sac. The sac was round and I've had all the normal pregnancy symptoms--no bleeding or cramping other than when the egg was burrowing into the uterus a while ago. Tomorrow, I go in for another u/s and blood tests, but I want to be hopeful. The doc mentioned a DNC if the results tomorrow are unfavorable. But is there a chance they just can't see my baby--or that it's too small yet? I don't want to abort my baby if it's really healthy and growing.

Hi ladies - Kate the same thing happened to me today. I am 8w1d today and I had my first sonogram and it shows and empty sac. They took blood and I go back Wednesday for more to see if my levels are doubling or not. I am trying to stay positive - the stories on this forum help :) Keep me posted - I woould like to hear the progression of someone in the same boat as me :)

Kate and Jennifer... My Email is "Jarhead4me2@aol.com"... If you email me, I will send you my 7 week 5 days ultrasound. I am 100% sure on my conception date, for it was only one day, lol... So, you can see if it looked anything like it. My last pregnancy sounds like both of you. Except we seen a tiny fetal pole that did have a slight heart flicker. It just never got any better after about 3 weeks and then the heart finally stopped The sac was also perfectly round and I also never had any bleeding, cramps, nothing!!! It wasn't just the ultrasound that made me know it wasn't going so well... My HCG was only going up, but not doubling. Anyhow, I got pregnant 5 weeks after my loss and am now going on 18 weeks. I had an ultrasound at 5 weeks 6 days and we seen the fetal pole and yolk sac with a cardiac flicker. Then at my 7 week 5 day (from gestation) scan, (5 weeks 5 days from conception)... the heartbeat was very strong at 166 bpm and it looked like a shrimp. You could also see the tail and the yolk sac. I'll send you the pic if you want. :)

Hi all, I'm not 100% sure of my dates, but I think I'm around 8-9 weeks. I started to bleed about 5 days ago, it was bright red and moderate, and lasted for 3 hours. I think I lost 1-2 tbsns of blood, then nothing until 2 days ago when I had minimal brownish blood, just when I wiped on and off for 1 day. Then Monday very light pinkish-red blood, on and off only when I wiped. I had an u/s and a trans vag u/s done yesterday (Monday), and was told I had an empty sac, that measured about 6.5 weeks gestation. No heartbeat, no fetal poles. My doctor gets the full report today, and said we may need to do a d&c. I'm getting some pretty bad cramping on and off, but no bleeding to go with it and I still have my pregnancy symptoms (frequent urination, sore b___st, a little nausea). I had a baby May 28 2005, and I am wondering if because this pregnancy is so soon after my last baby, if that could be part of the reason I'm getting the cramping, and if like some of you other ladies, I should wait another week or two and see if anything progresses. I'm scared to build up false hope for myself, just to be let down again though. After reading through some of the posts, I was amazed to see how many of you were told you had an empty sac only to go on and have the babies. Any input on my situation would be greatly appriciated.

Well, the difference Marie is not only is your sac measuring weeks short, your also bleeding. Unfortunetly one out of 4 pregnancies end in a m/c for whatever reason. Usually early on just for the simple fact that the cell division didn't happen properly so it never developed. Or if it did, it didn't correctly, so finally disolved, but the sac remains and stays growing. Just very slow until the body realizes there in no baby. You will know for sure if your HCG isn't doubling. Anyhow, the good news is... its not because you got pregnant so soon after giving birth. Also, if you have this D&C then you will ovulate once your HCG hits 0. You are very fertile, so if you want to TTC again, have your dr. test your HCG down to 0 and have fun that week. I've lost 3 pregnancies and this one that is going to best for me is the one that I got pregnant my first ovulation after my last loss. So, keep your head up!! LISA--- We had to reschedule the ultrasound for this Friday. So, 3 more days!! whoohoo!!

Hi again, thanks for responding to my post Daniella. I got the numbers back from my beta HCG tests. 2 weeks ago they were 2800, and on Thursday (9 days later) they were 13,000, which sounds like it's ok to me. The ultrasound report unfortunatley was not ready today, but will be tomorrow. Do you think the numbers are appropriate?? My husband and I are strongly pro-life, and want to make the right decision on this.

P.S. I also sat down and thought about it and figured out my lmp was Oct. 11, so I'm 8 weeks today.

Hi Tamara I too am 7.5 weeks PG and last week u/s showed sac only, no baby, now this monday had another u/s and shows fetal growth but size matches only 5 weeks, but there is no heart beat. I have another u/s this monday to see if anything has changed. Let's pray for one another :)

Kate - December 7

I want to know, too. I had two u/s this week and my second blood draw. HCG levels are consistent with 8.5 weeks of preg. But doc is fairly certain I have an empty sac, too. My husband is completely distraught. I grieved on Monday when we saw no baby in my womb. I'm not feeling very optimistic. But I have had no spotting or cramping at all! If my HCG levels are still rising (results tomorrow), I have to keep testing and waiting. If the drop, I will most likely need to get a D&C because my body is clueless.

Kate - December 7

Something someone said about the sac measuring smaller than normal also makes me think we lost our baby. My LMP was over 8 weeks ago, but my sac measures around 5.5 weeks. My HCG levels are 22,000 (from Monday). Tomorrow, I'll see where they stand. Unless my period was screwed up, the numbers don't look good. My doc said two key stats: at 6 weeks, you should see a fetal pole and something is visible on u/s at 1,500 HCG. If my HCG rises a lot from Monday, I have to keep waiting and testing.

Jennifer - December 8

Kate - I had the same scenario as you on Monday when I went in for my first appt. My dr just called - my levels were 29,285 on monday and yesterdays were pretty much the same, only went up a little so I have more blood work done tomorrow and another sonogram on Monday. I am so heartbroken. Have you got your results back yet?

Hang on everyone! - December 9

If you can, look around this website and you will see lots of posts that were done when someone was terrified of what the doctor did not find - go up to the top and in the search area type in low hcg at 7 weeks and you will see where a husband posted about his wife's experience - the truth is this is not an exact science and sometimes the dates do not match - sperm can live up to a week in the womb waiting for an egg - so timing can be off up to one week there and then that throws everything off. Just make sure the doctor doesn't rush you into anything - I have had two d&c's and do have a beautiful baby - but the I only had the d&c when I was 100% possitive that the baby had not lived. I hope that each of you will hold your babies soon - and I hope I will too!

Daniella found out anything yet? The gender:)

Daniella - December 12

Marie at 8 weeks your HCG should be at least 40,000. THey should at least double every 48 hours. My HCG was 134 on 13 dpo. 370 on 15 dpo. 6 days later 21 dpo they were 4467. then a week after that they were over 40,000. HCG can totally vary in the amount. BUT it does have to at least double every 48 hours. Also, Kate - you are correct. They usually say once your HCG hits 2000, you should see something in the uterus. MEANING a sac. Not truly anything else. Just the sac for sure. I will say that if you are 8 weeks you should see a definite looking fetus. I have my 7 week 5 day ultrasound (I know my exact date of conception) if anyone wants it. Email me and I'll send it. My Email is "Jarhead4me2@aol.com" At 6 weeks we seen a little fetal pole, yolk sac and cardiac activity (heart flicker). At my 7 weeks 5 days u/s you could see the head arms, tail (lol) and yolk sac with a heartbeat of 166. At my 11 week visit you could see a baby. You could see it dancing, waving its arms, kicking its legs. My last loss was at 12 weeks pregnant and it didn't even look the size of my 7 week on this time. So, we knew it wasn't going to make it. The heart stayed a flicker for 3 weeks and then finally stopped. I had a D&C and got pregnant first ovulation (5 weeks later). I had to switch doctors because the first one wanted to do a D&C before the heartbeat had stopped and I said "no way would I do that" He made a horrible comment like, "Well, its not like its going to make it" OH MY!! So, I went to a different place that actually can not legally do a D&C until there is definitely proof of no cardiac activity because its a Christian hospital and thats the rules and regs. there. But, if you know 100% that its not a viable pregnancy, then a D&C is absolutely great!
