HCG needs to "at least" double every 48 hours.. in the beg. it should double every 36 hours. So, if its hardly going up, much less doubling, then that doesn't sound good. Mine was 134 at 13 days past conception. 2 days later it was at 370 (so, tripled)... 6 days after that it was at 4467 and a week after that it was over 40,000. My last pregnancy, it was just slightly going up, but not doubling.... and it wasn't growing. I had a D&C and got pregnant 5 weeks later on my first ovulation and today I am 23 weeks with a healthy boy. Its sad to go thru, but there is hope!!

I just got off the phone w/a friend of mine who spent the night in the ER - 7 weeks pregnant - did an U/S, saw the sac but nothing in it. She's worried and so am I - having gone through 2 pregnancies myself, I've never had this happen

Nikki- why was she in the ER? pain? bleeding? At 7 weeks, still may be early because sometimes you can be wrong on your dates or implantation could take longer..... but, what drove her to the ER?

I have had 4 empty sac m/c but 2 healthy pregnancies in between. I just want to know what causes this empty sac and how can we prevent it???

Nat - January 13

I first wrote on 15th Nov. I had a scan at 6w 3d and only saw yolk sac and ges sac. I went back 2 weeks later, everything was fine and measuring right for dates. Now 16 weeks and everything is great. Hope this brings some hope x

i too, just found out today that i had "an empty sac".... im very young to be having a baby, but even at knowing that, it hurt seeing "nothing" instead of a growing baby. i started to blame it all on myslef, because i could not get to a doctor until today (around 10 weeks) becasue most of Drs needed my medicaid card, which i had to wait to be send...... and to find that out shocked me. i still feel sick and hopeless until reading this forum... mi would like to get another u/s done, even tho i know its just a waste, but to me, nothing can waste hope. i wish hope to all of us, and ya'll will be in my prayers every night.

Lilian- (and to the rest wondering the same)... and empty sac was once NOT empty. What causes a "blighted ovum" is that the cell division, chromosome abnormality, etc., etc. caused the embryo to not funny develope and stop growing and the sac just absorbes it leaving it to be absorbed,, and the sac could keep growing without a baby for even 4 weeks until your body realizes, hey.. there's not a baby in here anymore. That is why a lot of woman have D&C's when they know it stopped growing, or isn't there anymore.. because it can take a long time to miscarry... plus, once you know its not going to make it, its hard living everyday knowing there isnt a viable pregnancy in your body. Anyhow, the embryo may have stopped growing right after implantation or stopped growing and the body absorbed it weeks into it. Either way, it happens far too often. Yet, your chances are high that you will have one complete to term after. Have faith, it will happen!!

nov 16 i m/c at about 16 weeks. i had to get a dnc. :( i was told could try again after my first af. had my first af dec 23. and today i visited my dr. due to the flu. he did an ultrasound and said that i had ulcers. im only 21!!! he also told me that it appeared that i had "empty sac syndrome" my period isnt late until tomorrow. dr says that e.s.s. can trigger the ulser syptoms. isnt it a bit early for him to try and diagnose this when i dont even think that im pregnant? anyone else experience this? well good luck to all ttc!

Reneeb- sounds like you might need to get a second opinion. I say this because even if you were 2 weeks past conception, you couldn't see a gestational sac in the uterus. So, I have no idea why he would say any of that to you. I would ask for your quants (HCG) taken to see whats going on and if you are even pregnant. For all you know it could be left over from your D&C that may have not got everything. I've known some woman that had to go in a second time to get everything out. Especially if you were further along. I was about 12 weeks.. (at least) when I had my last loss and D&C. It took me 5 weeks to ovulated for the first time. If I didn't get pregnant first ovulation, my first period would have been exactly 7 weeks after D&C. My HCG the day of the D&C was 10,000. You can't ovulate again until your HCG is all the way down. oh, just reread what you wrote.. any possibility that Dec. 23rd was implantation bleeding and not AF?? Because that would be about 5 weeks after your D&C also. If so, then maybe you could see a gestational sac on ultrasound. Yet, not enough to make a blighted ovum (empty sac) diagnosis. Just a thought. My best advice is to get your HCG checked and go from there. See if they're doubling. Here's some hope though... I got pregnant 5 weeks after my D&C and we couldn't see anything in the uterus until my HCG hit 2000+ and then we seen a sac and then a baby and a heartbeat. I am now 24 weeks. So, there is hope!! Get everything checked out before you come to the "empty sac" conclusion. I wish you the best!!!

This happened to me. For my third pregnacy, I went to the doctor at 8 weeks and since I hadn't really had a period since my previous preg, she sent me to get an ultra sound. I knew something was wrong, they saw the sac but no baby. I guess that sometimes happens. Your body thinks and acts like your pregnant even though the baby just didn't develop. But if your doctor thinks everything is all right, I wouldn't worry about it. hope every thing goes well. GOOD LUCK

Unfortunantly yesterday I was given the grim news that my OB believes I have what is called empty sac syndrom. I had my last period Nov. 21st and found out I was pregnant on Dec 15th. The week before Christmas I had my first ob appt. it was to early to see a heartbeat by us. The follwing week my ob did a v____al us and sawe no heartbeat then ordered blood work everything hormone wise came back ok. My hormones have been rising and rising but very little growth on the sac has occured less then 50%. Now after my fourth v____al ultrasound still no heartbeat. Iam scheduled for a D&C tommorrow 1/26/06 It fells crudy. Iam really glad to be reading all these comments now I dont fell so alone.

Brandy - January 26

I forgot to make a comment Iam noticing that in alot of the postings women are only getting a ultrasound roughly two weeks after the last. This is odd to me I would think that the doctors would do one every week like with myself to track growth of the sac more effectively. Let me know if you agree.

Brandy _ I dunno.. I got my ultrasound every week on my last one that I ended up having a D&C.. and many other woman said they are having one ever week also. It just depends on the dr. and if you want a D&C.. if your going to miscarry naturally, then it doesn't really make a difference to keep going in for an ultrasound just to see its not going to make it. If your going to have a D&C, you want to make sure that its not before you have the surgery. Each week I had my scan (for 3 weeks straight) the heartbeat stayed at a flicker. It wasn't growing how it should at all.. I was 12 weeks and it showed about 7 weeks. Everything looked good if I was actually 7 weeks, but.. I wasn't. I was 100% "at least" 12 weeks.. hey, I know when I had s_x last. lol.... but, the dr. kept trying to insist that maybe I'm not. I was like, whatever.... anyhow, after weeks and weeks we finally seen the heartbeat had stopped and had the D&C the next day. Its so hard... but, if your trying to conceive again.. Brandy, just get your HCG checked down to 5 after your surgery.. you ovulate again once your hormones are fully out. It took me 5 weeks for my HCG to get down to 0 and I ovulated and conceived that day and I am now 25 weeks. Also, don't have s_x for the 2 weeks they say after the surgery. I did 10 days after and it aggravated my uterus and made me start bleeding all over again. After the surgery, there was hardly any blood and it lasted less then a week. Never filled a pad. So, I thought I was OK... It just depends on your HCG is at the day of your surgery. If its not that high at all, then you might need to have s_x 2 weeks afterwards. lol... just make sure you have the facts (numbers).. Good luck!!!
