7 Weeks Pregnant Empty Sac

Hi I just joined this group and read few of the postings. I am 12 weeks pregnant and had my ultrasound on April 24th. They could not see the baby. This whole thing is completely new to me and I am totally devastated. I do not have any symptom of miscarriage. My doctor ordered another blood work to check if the hormone levels are rising. If not, she wants me to book a D&C. I had no nausea or vomiting in this pregnancy and kept thinking this was teh best pregnancy. An empty sac is completely new to me. Is that mean the baby was never there or it died or is there possibility it is going to appear sometime soon? Any suggestions????? LisaI

Well after my post on 4/18. On 4/22 I miscarried it wasen't so scary like I thought it would be, I thought my sac at 8 weeks was empty but after really checking my miscarriage there was a ambryo in the sac, I was so devastated to experience this but I had to know if there was a baby. The embryo looked like it was a 6 week gestation I miscarried at 9 weeks 6 days, but I am just happy that everything came out Placenta, Sac, Embryo. So what happened was that my baby Died at 6 week no more growth when I went for my 8 week App... I just thank god that I have 2 other healthy children, I will be trying again, I'll keep you Posted. <img src=http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h195/karlita1102/NewPics/6week.jpg height=200 width=200>

We went for our first u/s today unsure of our dates. We are likely 8-9 weeks but could be as early as 6 weeks. There was an empty sac which measured 5 weeks 4 days. Our OB thinks we should have seen a fetus given our HCG quants were 9000. Anyone with similar hcg and gestastional sac values who waited for another 2 weeks and saw a baby?

JSS, Please see my post, it is three above yours and my situation was exactly the same. I am currently at 11 weeks and things are going along fine. Good luck to you! Jayne

Hi Dulce, I just read your posting and wanted to know how your pregnancy is going so far? I miscarried 2 days after my posting and I can't wait to get pregnant again. My doctor tells me to wait one cycle which seems so long to me at this point. Anyways wish you best of luck this time.

After reading all the posting on this site, I am not sure what to do. I went in for my 3rd u/s today and the doctor said that they could not see a baby. When I went in for my last u/s (a week and two days ago) the doctor said that they found a heartbeat but that it was only 49bpm! She thought that it would be best then to check my hcg levels, they were still going up, but it took them two weeks to double (measuring at 29900). they said that i'm about 7 weeks pregnant right now. So if they saw a very faint heartbeat last week and nothing at all, except for the sac, this week...does that mean it'll definitely be a miscarriage?

I went to the dr last thurs with my husband because i was cramping alot and had decteted some spotting. when we met with the dr he told us about the tube baby and the empty sac. that right away got me scared. he then did an ultrasound but there was no baby. he also told me that for me being 5.5wks my sac did not look normal. he asked to have patience. i go back this thursday to get the results on my quantative hcg's and a repeat sonogram. i am very scared and do not know how i will react if we again see nothing.

RERE2 - May 31

Recently I just found out that I was pregnant at 5wks. Well by the sixth week exactly on mother's day I started spotting and as the days went on I started having some cramping and back aches. The spotting came and went and was never heavy. I went to my family dr. because all the OB doctors couldn't get me in for at least 2-3 wks. Well my family dr. did urine test and blood test and was only able to tell me that I was pgt. which I already knew. Not satisfied I went to the ER that following Monday. I got a whole work up. Blood work, ultrasound, and pelvic exam. MY u/s showed a sac but no baby and my hcg levels were 3,000. I was told that either I was earlier than expected or may have a missed preg. I cont. to spot up until today. The last couple of days the bleeding has been brown like old blood and the cramping has been stopped. I went back to the doctor yesterday and had more blood work. I am supposed to be 8wks. I am showing and everything. My uterus is enlarged as normal for prg. My hcg levels are only up to 4,125 a wk later than first test. The hardest thing about this is not knowing what is going to happen. I go back to dr. for u/s and blood work on June 6th. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I am 7.1 wks today. At 6.4 weeks v____al u/s revealed an empty sac, and my hcg was almost 10000. I am extremely worried as the dr told me he's not sure it's a sac and not a pool of blood, and said it could be an ectopic. He told me to come back for another u/s 1 week from then, which is 3 days from today. I am so scared that it's ectopic and will suddenly rupture. For now, i have no bleeding or cramps, just some slight pain on & off on the sides. I am a nervous wreck with a short fuse and i feel so bad because i have no patience for anmything and my poor husband has to put up with all this c___p. We got preg by IVF so dates are sure and I am on progesterone, which I think makes me more moody. I am 35 and nearly premenopausal according to my hormones and follicle count, so i am really scared i will never have the baby we want so much. I love my husband so much, I want to have his baby more than anything in the world. I'll let you know what happens. You are all in my prayers.

Hi again, i have been reading some of the questions you all have been asking and there are a couple things I have found out from reading medical research reports and stuff like that. 1- if you have a molar pregnancy your hcg will be abnormally high, never low. High hcg can also mean twins, though, so you need a u/s to know for sure. 2- If your hcg does not go up 66% in 2 days it is usually a bad sign. If it doesn't go up, goes down, or goes up only a little, say from 2000 to 2100, it is an extremely bad sign. This could be a blighted ovum (empty sac preg) or an ectopic, which is extremely dangerous. 2- if you hcg is as above and you have pain in your side DON'T take any chances- it is likely to be ectopic. 3- hcg levels in about 15% of ectopics do rise at a normal rate. If you have a normal rise but NOTHING in the uterus, not even an empty sac by the time there should definitely be one, it could likely be ectopic. Be very very careful. 4- If your hcg rise is abnormal AND there is no sac, it probably IS ectopic. 5- If the hcg rise is abnormal and the sac is not round/oval but tapered at one end or flattened out it could be a pseudosac, which is a collection of fluid such as blood. This happens with ectopics, so watch out if this is your case. 6- Early ectopic pregnancies can often be treated with Methotrexate, so you might not need surgery.

I absolutely had to respond when I read the above posting. Sure, the world would be perfect if every pregnant woman could say for sure that one thing (such as low hormone levels) meant the same thing for everyone, but that is not the case. ABSOLUTELY NOT THE CASE!!!!!!!!! At 6 weeks, I had an empty sac and excruciating pain in my left side. I could not laugh, cough, sneeze, or roll over in bed without doubling up in pain. I was positive that my pregnancy was tubal. My doctor was pretty sure and had me getting checked out every other day. (please see my much more detailed post above). My hormone levels only were at 30,000 and after 48 hours only went up to 39,000. I was told repeatedly that this "was not a viable pregnancy" Because I had to travel on business, I could not have a D&C as the doctor wanted. When I finally went in for my pre-D&C checkup there was a baby, a heartbeat, and perfectly shaped sac! After speaking to many people about this, I found that NOT EVERY WOMAN has the "right" hormone levels at any given time, and while the rise is a good sign, there are plenty of HEALTHY pregnancies that did not have them. As well as many miscarriages that had wonderful hormone numbers. So please do not a__sume that what has happened to one woman is what will happen with you. As long as you are not miscarrying on your own and the doctor says it is safe to forego the D&C for a while, don't do it until you are sure there is no chance. I believed all that stuff about the D&C giving you closure and whatnot, but I can a__sure you that I am so thankful I didn't go for it! Do what is right for you, not what is right for some of the people, if you want to wait, wait. If you want it over with, end it. But don't make that decision based on any inflexible advice. Nothing in this world is 100%. I wish you all the best of luck and healthy happy pregnancies, whether it be now or in the near future. Feeling fine at 15 weeks :)

Hi, this is in response to Jananet. First of all, congratulations on you preg. I'm glad to hear it's going well for u. I don't think you read my post carefully, or you would have noticed that I was not saying 'if you have x it means y'. I was simply relaying information that I have found in several reliable sources, regarding the warning signs of abnormal preg because when it comes to ectopics people should be aware. The sooner it gets taken care of, the less damage and danger to the mother, and it's better to be safe than sorry. If you read my post carefully, you would have noticed that I said 15% of ectopics DO rise at a normal rate. I think I made it pretty clear that none of these things on their own or even in combination = a diagnosis, but that they should be taken seriously. Only a doctor can diagnose you. Regarding you 'low' hcg I don't know why your doctor thought the rise from 30000 to 39000 was abnormal, because hcg is only expected to double every 48 hours at the beginning, slows down after it reaches a point, and even goes down near the end of the pregnancy, from what I have read. Anyway, all the information in my previous post was from medical journals and you can verify it for yourself. I hope you have a wonderful, boring, uneventful pregnancy. I have also had low hcg, although in my case it only went to around 10000 at 6.4 weeks and at that time they saw an empty sac and sent me home although they weren't sure it wasn't just a pool of blood. All weekend I have been so stressed not knowing whether I have an ectopic or not. I guess I'm find out on Tuesday what's going on and I hope it turns out as good for me as it did for you.

sonia989 - June 4

btw... I never said anything about anyone getting a d&c, which are useless when it comes to ectopics anyway.

jananet - June 5

Sonia989, I am hoping for the best for you and will keep you in my thoughts for a healthy pregnancy. I did not mean to imply that you were recomending a D&C to anyone. I wanted to make it a point to mention it because through the 4 weeks when I had no idea which way things were going, many people suggested one (doctors and nurses included) to help with a "sense of closure". I was hard put to find anyone saying otherwise, so I wanted to make sure that in a forum like this someone mentioned it. I also realize that I never completed a point I started to make, that is during those 4 weeks, I was told repeatedly that I had a tubal pregnancy. It turns out that I didn't, which was a relief for me, as I had one many years ago that caused many physical problems and infertility concerns. (this is my first pregnancy since) As it turns out, the pain I was experiencing was fortunately not from a tubal pregnancy, but from a tremendous ovarian cyst. After doing much research on the subject, I found that many women who develop cysts in early pregnancy experience the pain (of course) that mimics an ectopic pregnancy (firsthand, I can tell you the pain was identical) and then hormone fluctuations that can appear as a non-viable pregnancy. With all of the information out there, it seemed important to me to mention that there is always hope. I know sometimes it is hard to find it, I know in my case, all of the information I got pointed to me having no chance of a successful pregnancy. And I will honestly admit that every single day I worry about something going wrong, but I do now believe that even when there appears to be no hope whatsoever, sometimes there is. I hope that things work out for you, and will keep you in my thoughts. I am sorry if my post seemed to point fingers, it wasn't meant for that at all. Please keep posting and let me know how things work out. I absolutely wish the best for you :)

First I want to thank everyone who has contributed and shared. It has made me feel more peaceful, which is pretty amazing. I have had 2 u/s one week apart, both showing 2 empty sacs. I have been spotting on & off almost the entire time (with no pain) so I was hopeful maybe my dates were off. I thought I was 8 weeks, but maybe could be only 5 (as measured in first u/s). I was ready to accept the inevitable, and still am, but now I know I want more information. I was never told my HCG counts, just that they were increasing too slowly. I had to wait for 3 days for my HCG test results, and it was only after I called and begged for info and explained my fears did they finally get them for me. The 2nd u/c appt, they were running over an hour late. I asked them to call my Dr. to get the HCG results, they did not. During the u/c, they took about 5 mins, told me nothing (size, expected dates, etc.), seem to know nothing, and for my HCG's, confirming they hadn't bothered. but that is not the worst part ( I know - hard to believe). Then the Dr. said, essentially, I have old eggs, and this happens with old eggs. I know I am 36, but really... Then he said this could keep happening with my old eggs, and the odds will never improve. He said it is a 1 in 6 chance that the pregnancy will end this way, and that next time, my odds are no better. God forbid he give me the slightest hope! Thank I called my OB, and asked what to do next. She said didn't the u/s Dr. tell me? I told her he only told me I could wait for mc or have D&C. This was Friday. She said come in Monday to schedule D&C. I said no, I want to wait for natural. She said if it did not happen over the weekend I should come in Tuesday. Very pushy for giving my no info. 2 final points: 1) The good news: my husband and I only just started trying in March, so we are grateful we got pregant so fast, and only hope we will again. 2) I asked my Dr. for my prenatal test results (which they only said were "fine") and asked specifically about chicken pox. I discovered that I was NOT immune to Chicken Pox. Whatever the outcome of this pregancy, I will be getting my Chicken Pox vaccine before I try again. The bad news is I have to wait 6 Months after the vaccine to try again or there could be a problem. I suppose this discovery could also be looked at as good news, except I really really do not want to wait that long. :) Sorry for the long post - it is quite cathartic. I guess I just wanted to pa__s along the chicken pox info for anyone who may be in between and in the same situation.
