Blighted Twin

My sister is currently seven weeks pregnant and had her first ultrasound last week. They found a viable fetus with a strong heartbeat but there was also some material surrounding the baby that they were unsure of. They described it as possibly an empty sac and made it sound like there was more material than just the one empty sac. The material is also much larger than the fetus. She was sent again this week to a perinatologist to have another ultrasound and they still found the viable fetus with an even stronger heartbeat but were still unsure as to what the surrounding material was. She has been told it was "possibly" a twin or triplet pregnancy where one or two fetus failed to develop but they were just unsure. The perinatologist was going to take it to committee. Is anyone aware of any other possibilites besides a blighted twin that the material could possibly be? My parents are extremely worried and I'm trying to ease their fears. Any information would be very helpful! Thank you, Allison

The only other thing I can think of is a hematoma (blood clot) in the uterus. I had one of these at 8 weeks and it looked just like another sac. In my case we knew it wasn't another sac because I'd had scans done at 6 weeks and 7 weeks which only showed one baby. I was told by the doctor though that around 6 weeks is a common time to lose a twin so it could well be an empty sac. Did your sister do fertility treatment? I did ICSI and the doctors told me empty sacs are more common after that because the doctors put back more than one embryo. Hope everything works out for your sister.

Thanks for your response. I'm hoping it's a blighted twin simply because there seems to be fewer complications and a better outcome for the fetus. She did not have any fertility treatment nor do we have any history of twins in our family. Were you able to progress through your pregnancy without any complications from the blood clot?

It probably is a blighted twin if that's what the doctors said it is. My baby is fine, thanks for asking - had my last scan at 21 weeks and every check was fine and clot had gone. I did bleed 10 times from week 6 to week 14 though, its scary but didn't harm the baby, just made the mother a nervous wreck! I'm 23 weeks now and doctors think everything should be normal. Hope everything's fine for your sister.
