My best friend is now 6 weeks pregnant and was admitted to the hospital with a blood sugar at 500 plus. They are getting her started on insulin and doing everything they can but I am really worried. I am 18 1/2 weeks and can't bear the thought of her losing her baby like I did last year. Anyone else have this happen to them or know anyone who has and had a postivie outcome.

It's actually very common to get gestational diabetes while pregnant. It's possible to get normal diabetes too. So long as her blood sugars weren't wildly elevated for months, she should be okay.

I am 7 weeks pregnant and am a diabetic. I've had it since I was 9 years old. Your friend should be fine as long as she listens to what her doctor tells her about her diabetes management. One number that high isn't going to hurt the pregnancy as long as she gets it down and keeps it there. Diabetes is very manageable, but can be frustrating because anything from the common cold to hormone changes can send it into highs or lows. Tell your friend not to give up, it'll get easier. Good luck.
