Worried Husband - April 8

My wife is 14 weeks and has been having a rough time since week 7. First she was diagnosed with hyperemesis. We were referred to Matria (great bunch of people) and they put her on a Zofran Infusion Pump. That worked for a bit and we now have to supplement the Zofran with Reglan. After we got this under control, her feet became swollen, bruised and very painful. So painful that she can barely walk. Soon after this she came down with a sore throat that has made it very painful to talk. She has numerous ulcers on the back of her throat and it is becoming harder and harder to eat and drink for her. We have been to 8 doctors (2-ER, 2-GP, 2 Vascular Surgeons, 2-OB). They have ruled out and circulatory problems at this point. The best we can get is...."I know you need help now, I just don't know what kind of help you need." Needless to say this is very frustrating because I am watching her quality of life dissipate with every waking moment. They believe she has an auto-immune problem and want to start her on either heparin or coumadin next week. The only way she is currently getting any relief is by taking hydrocodone. We did not want to use this med for fear of damage to the baby, but the pain became absolutely unbearable. We are concerned for the baby but I am more concerned about my wife. Anyone with similar symptoms or ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated. I told her our next step was a voodoo witch doctor.....(just kidding) Thanks........

I am not qualified to help you in any way. The only thing I can offer is to keep your family in my prayers. I hope you can find the help you are looking for.

I'm sure you have already combed the internet for any answer you can find... have you seen the www.hyperemesis.org forum? I didn't see you wifes latest symptoms mentioned, but I don't know if someone there might have some support to offer.

I think you need to ask your OB for a referral to a specialist. There are OB's who specialize in difficult pregnancies. Also, could her symptoms be a side effect of the antinausea meds? Ask the pharmacy you got her meds at. Hydrocodone is safe during pregnancy, for the baby, but there is a possibility of your wife becoming dependant on it. If eating or drinking is painful for her, try making "drinking jello" get regular jello, and use twice as much water as the package directions call for. Pour it in a pitcher instead of a mold, and when it's chilled it turns into a slightly thick liquid that feels good to a sore throat (it sort of slithers down).

Thanks for all the tips. We saw a high risk OB this a.m. and they wanted to draw more blood for more testing. We will just have to wait and see.....Thanks again.....
