My blood type is negative. A year ago I got pregnant by one of 2 people. One has negative blood, the other positive. I had a miscarriage after about 5 weeks and I wanted to know if I had the miscarriage because the father was the one with positive blood. If so, what do I need to do to ensure that this pregnancy, (intentional pregnancy by my husband) will be o.k.?

D21, I also have negative blood type. You need to make sure that after your miscarriage you were given a shot called Rhgam. This is very important because if will keep all other pregnancies healthy. You can't let your blood mix with positive blood of the babies because it will most certainly cause miscarriages. I have had 2 miscarriages already and got the shot both times, so it may not have anything to do with your blood type and whether the fathers blood was positive or negative. It would have only mattered after you would have given birth, or had a miscarriage/abortion. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have further questions. afellman@ncen.com

Amy is right. The because you have had a misscarriage, your body has probably built up antibodies to Rh positive cells, if you were exposed to positive blood cells during your misscarriage. If you have become pregnant again, these antibodies will attack and destroy red blood cells of the unborn fetus. Your OB can give you sinjections of an immune globulin which can prevent this. It is usually administered right after a misscarriage or about 28 weeks of pregnancy then again immediately following delivery.
The best advise is to see an OB asap so the proper prenatal care can be established.
