It's called toxoplasmosis. It only applies if you let your cat outside. Cats being cats will sometimes catch birds; eating raw meat, no matter the source, is how the cat contracts toxoplasmosis. You can be tested to see if you have ever had it, if so you have nothing to worry about. You cannot catch it again. If you have not had it, can't be tested, or can't get someone else to clean the litter box wear gloves and a mask when cleaning the litter box. Wash up thoroughly afterwards, accidental ingestion of cat feces is how humans contract toxoplasmosis. You should also take care when gardening as strays or your cat might decide the flowerbed is a perfect litter box!

oh yeah--I have four cats. I was tested for toxo early in my pregnancy. Unfortunately I never had it, fortunately I haven't contracted since then. I have limited my contact with the kitties and of course I never change the litter box--my husband does. A litter maid may be a good idea, it does all the scooping for you.

Well that is good info, thanks for replying. My cas are all inside cats, always have been and always will be... should I still be cautious... what are the symptoms of toxoplasmosis ? Does that mean i should also not cuddle with my feline friends ? I have one who shares my pillow with me at night ? Thanks again for the info...

If you NEVER give your kitties raw meat you should be fine. No problem, I was really freaked out at first too, but my kitties are indoor/outdoor.

Remember you don't have to get the name brand pregnancy tests, the Walmart brand Equate works just as well if not better than the name brand. I am due any day now. In any case, I wish you the very best!
