Dragonfly, thank you so much for your kind advice. To update you, I rang my doctor yesterday and said I should come to see him asap. I went in the afternoon and he removed my coil. I said I had strongly believed I was pregnant, but he just said that the urine test was negative so... I now have really bad cramps, which I am sure is from the coil being removed, but am very concerned that my worries about ectopic pregnancy have been so lightly dismissed. I will go back to the doctor again if I still feel bad. I am bleeding as well, but that is normal after coil removal - isn'it it?

Charmane, Congrats on getting so far along in your pregnancy! You are doing a great job :) have you been on any restrictions at all? Or have been able to go about your usual routine?
Tracey it is normal to have some bleeding after they remove your IUD, but if it persists I would call your Dr. back.

Tracey---Yes, I've heard it is true that right after the insertion or taking out the IUD, there is slight bleeding. I bled for a week after they inserted it into my uterus (lightly, mind you, but still there was spotting). I guess it's the waiting game for you to either see if you continue after a week or so to have the same symptoms or if the hormone levels are strong enough to show that you are indeed pregnant. I tell you this...don't believe what they say if you feel strongly that there is something wrong or that you are pregnant. Sometimes you get these d__n doctor/know-it-alls who don't give a you know what! They're just trying to get you to believe whatever so they can get out at 5PM to go golfing! Of course, not all doc's are the same. I myself have good insurance that will allow me to see a midwife service that also acts as my OB GYN. Ya know, I hope all of the women and their partners who care take it to heart that you don't have to stay with the same physician, whether it be OB's or your dentist or whether you're on state low income healthcare or have the best health insurance out there. BE PROACTIVE! Stick up for yourselves & don't let some doc tell you what is wrong or not wrong with your body! You know what you're feeling & if it doesn't feel right (the answers that you are getting), then either ask more in-depth questions or find another doc that you feel more comfortable with. Don't "settle"! But I do feel for your situation. Good luck & I hope you get some answers soon!

Dragonfly, thank you for your kind advice. I am in the UK, so subject to the good old NHS! But I take your comments on board regarding sticking up for yourself. Things seem to have settled down now, I just have to worry about what I'm going to do for contraception now. Going back on the pill seems to be the best option, although I'm not over keen on more hormones. We don't know if we are ready to say we've had all our children and opt for a vasectomy - the Mirena was sold to me as the next best thing!

I am in shock over reading these posts. I can't believe it. I have 4 children (3 planned, one concieved on birth control pills) and my youngest will turn 2 next month. My husband was going to get a vasectomy but meanwhile I was having horrible periods. We just moved and my new gyn suggested the mirena and that with the mirena there is no need for my husband to get surgery. SO I get the mirena inserted about 6 weeks ago. No problems, went in easy no pain. After a week I checked the string like I was supposed to, it was fine. So my husband and I started having s_x again. No problems. Well its been 6 weeks and I have not had my period yet. I was told to check the string after each period and since I have not had it, I checked for strings yesterday and could not find them. I also have pregnancy symptoms (which I know well since I have 4 kids). I found an old home pregnancy test left over from my last child and it turned positive in immediately. I am home panicking. My husband is at work and he will FREAK when he finds out. I have not even gone for my IUD follow up and I'm pregnant. My follow up is next week. Is it possible the IUD fell out without me knowing it?? Or is the string up in my uterous?? My head is just spinning over this and I don't know how I'm going to tell my husband. I am so upset at my doctor. She has NO kids herself and she a__sured me that this was equal in effectiveness to a vasactomy and here I am pregnant 6 weeks after I got it. I don't understand HOW. Has anyone had theirs fall out without realizing it?

Mt story is so similiar to so many that I have read....I had the Mirena IUD put in in march....followed by heavy bleeding for three months...then finally regular periods.....this month I felt the "pregnant feeling" (we have three beautiful children already) but took two test that came up -. I still feel the same, only spotted this month for two days....does the device cause a false - result???

Amy, yes there is a greater chance of expulsion within the year after insertion. So it is possible it has fallen out, perhaps while going to the bathroom that you wouldn't have noticed....but it could also, shift around a bit toomaking it more difficult to feel the strings. Either way with a positive home pregnancy test, you should go back to your doctor right away! Good Luck and let us know what happened.

Well I have read everyone posts. I am glad to see a couple of perople who are doing great in their pregnancies. I haven't had a perirod in 11days. I did an hp only to find out that it messed up so no resulsts. My hubby thinks that I am overreacting and to wait unitil payday to get another one. By the way I have the paraguard IUD. I see so many poats about the merina one. I know that if I am pr that I will just take it one day at a time. I am so tempted to go to the store now and take a test becasue of everything I have read in the posts.

It really is disgusting that we've all been sold the idea that an IUD is as effective as a vasectomy, when from reading everyone's stories here it clearly isn't. I have now gone back on the pill and will wait until I turn 40 for my husband to get a vasectomy (he doesn't know yet). If men had the babies we'd have better birth control and better pain relief during childbirth.

Oh, Tracey! I'm so sorry that you feel that way! I can tell you're fed up with men in general. And I'd like to expand on your notion of men having babies & better pain/birth control if they actually could get pregnant. I think these might be the same indivduals who design womens' bras & pregnancy clothes. Why do they design such uncomfortable holsters for such a delicate area?!!! And why in God's name would anyone think that a pregnant woman wants to look like a cow with a huge bow strapped onto the belly of a dress?!!! It isn't cute! In fact, some of the ugliest fashions I've ever seen have been in the maturnity section of any store. But I digress...I'm sorry you're not getting the satisfaction from from your healthcare provider as you would like. Is there any way you can see anyone else? Perhaps a woman doctor (who has children) & is more empathetic?

Hi Lori, I'm going through the same thing. I just had a scan today and I too am 6 weeks along. My doctor as well could not locate the string to remoe the IUD. He did tell me that it would be safer to leae it until deliery than to remoe it any other way. He told me my chances of a miscarrage are only 5% higher than a womans without an IUD. I hae 3 kids and unexpected pregancy. But this is my spouses 1st. So now that I am pregnant we really want. Best of wishes to you. Your in my prayers keep me in yours. PLEASE.

most of the complaints are with the mirena iud. I have a paraguard iud (no hormones) that I have had for 7 years. Its been great.

Just relaized I made a typo, meant to say I bought and took ANOTHER test. The one I took the other day was old and left over from my almost 2 year old. Bought a new one and different brand.
