Progesterone Level

I have had 2 miscarriages, and now in my 3rd pregnancy, I am 12 weeks. I have been on progestorone since I found out, (since 5 weeks) and my doctor said to keep going until 14 weeks. He said my placenta would take over....so far so good. We saw and heard the heartbeat at 9 weeks. Going again for another ultrasound. Good luck everyone.

Your doc should perscribe you a supplemental progesterone, either in the form of a pill, cream or suppository to help bring your progesterone level to where it needs to be and keep it there. I am currently taking 200 mg of Prometrium daily. This is not harmful to your baby if you're body is unable to produce the proper levels naturally. If you take progesterone while you are not pregnant, it will keep you from becoming pregnant, but if you're already pregnant, it will help to keep you from miscarrying. I almost miscarried my second child due to low progesterone levels. As a matter of fact, after performing an ultrasound, My doctor said the best thing I could do was to go home and just wait for it happen, but the progesterone suppositories he perscribed saved my baby's life. I did have a miscarriage about 4 years later due to the same problem. Now, almost 9 years later I am pregnant again (7 weeks). This time I knew to ask for the blood test immediately so that I could begin hormone therapy before it ever posed a threat to my unborn. The best advice I can give to anyone who has ever experienced this problem in the past is to get checked immediately after testing positive for a pregnancy. As a matter of fact, insist on it! Don't let your doctor put it off even for a day. Good luck to all of you!

Denise - 13.8 is not bad, especially if it hasn't fallen from a lower number. If that's what it's been throughout and your baby is growning, it may mean that you are just one of those women who do not neet a high progesterone level to carry a pregnancy. My doctor said he has had patients who have carrried to term with prog. levels of 7!!! Hard to believe. He didn't seem concerned that my prog. level was 11.9 at 5 1/2 weeks as my HCG was good. I was still nervous, though, as I had a miscarriage and an ectopic earlier this year, so I pushed for the progesterone. He gave me crinone - really gross. Who knows... maybe I don't need it, but who knows for sure? My ultrasound is on Thursday. I'll be 7 weeks 4 days, so should get some definite answers re: viability. I have serious morning sickness (all day) so I am being cautiously optimistic.

ladies, i'm so glad if found your thread. about 2 wks ago, i had my 1st appt with an RE. i have pcos and have trouble ovulating so it was going on about 10 months ttc (since m/c last dec). RE saw a follicle on u/s so advised my dh and i to try. 4 days after my appt, RE ordered prog. bloodwork. my levels looked "kinda low" according to the nurse. well, this morning i took a HPT and BFP!!!!!!!!! but i'm finding it very difficult to get excited because my prog. were low. is it too late for the RE to prescibe something that will help me keep this baby? thanks ladies!!!

Hi all, to start I will give a quick history, this is my 5th pregnancy, I only have 1 child, he is just turning 10 and is the love of my life, My 1st pg was ectopic, the 2nd was a mc the 3rd I was sick as a dog the whole nine months and I had my son, no supplements or anything was taken to have him, last year in I had a mc baby stopped developing at 7 weeks 2 days, I didn't start bleeding until 13 weeks. Now I am 6 weeks today, I had an HCG done on 08/31 the level was 6235 had another HCG done on 09/02 the level was 8300 the nurse did not tell me what my progesterone level was, she only said that it was normal level for a non pregnant woman. I was prescribed a progesterone supplement. I have a us scheduled for tommorow. Is there anyone outhere that has had success with progesterone therapy after conception. I am just kinda numb don't know what to feel right now. Please let me know if anyone else has gone through the same thing or similar.

Ruby- It is not too late to start progesterone. I too have PCOS. We finally got pregnant this past June after 8 months of trying, both with fertility drugs and without (got pregnant without). My progesterone was 8 when I was first tested. I beleive I was tested at around 5 weeks. I was put on PIO shots (progesterone in oil) from 5 weeks until the beginning of the 13th week. I am just about 15 weeks and things are looking good. I say call your doctor and talk to him/her. Good luck! Jen

hi ladies!! okay, i have a question, and it might be a stupid one but i'm gonna ask anyways since i can't ask my dr because it's afterhours. i just finished taking my 1st dose of progesterone, 200 mg. but i noticed on the bottle, that it says "Do not take this medication if you are pregnant or are trying to become pregnant." now, of course, i'm freaking out. can anyone explain to me in non-dr terms why this would be GOOD to take right now? thanks a lot ladies!!!!

Ruby, Warning labels can sometimes be a bit confusing or scary when you don't have the "big picture", but I can a__sure you that it's perfectly safe! The only thing I would recommend is that you take it in the evening after dinner or before bed, because it may cause you to feel a bit dizzy or light-headed and you'll need to be somewhere where you can lay down, if necessary. Good Luck!

Just a quick update - I had an ultrasound at 7 weeks 3 days today and saw baby and HEARTBEAT! Yeah! I think everyone comes to this board looking for advice and rea__surance so let me give some here: 1. I did not know my progesterone was low until it was tested at 5 weeks 11.9. I started Crinone the next day. Definately worth starting progesterone even after you're pregnant (even a few weeks so). Next - I only saw a gestational sac at my first ultrasound (5 weeks 3 days). Two weeks later baby is right for dates and heart is beating away! Finally - Crinone is foul. I have lots of discharge. Sometimes it's white, sometimes it's a salmon or light brown color, othertimes it is gray. Last night I pa__sed a HUGE blob that was very tan and DARK gray. I think it had been sitting up there a while. I had an internal today and Doctor said this discharge is normal. I am NOT bleeding or pa__sing any tissue. Hope some of you can take comfort in my findings. Wish my luck from here on out!

Oh yes, one more point. I had light pink mucus-like discharge after intercourse at 5 weeks, then very small amount of light brown spotting (size of a nickle, maybe a quarter, when wiping after peeing). So it looks like that was Ok afterall. I have NOT spotted once since beginning Crinone, although I haven't been having s_x either!

I just wanted to stop by here to give some hope to you ladies who are going through a tough time right now. I posted somewhere back in November and then a few times since then. I had a progesterone level of around 5 at 7 weeks. The dr told me to be cautiously optimistic. I had had a m/c only 2 months prior to finding out I was pregnant, and now had had some major bleeding and cramping. I was put on 200mg of progesterone (suppositories). I stayed on them until I was 13 weeks. The 2nd trimester and 3rd trimester went by with only a few minor little problems. And then on August 12 I delivered a very healthy 8lb boy! He is now 4 weeks old and is absolutely perfect in every way. I was so sure that I had lost him at 7 weeks and was ready to give up every having a successful pregnancy. But I kept hope and took the progesterone, and this time it turned out wonderfully. There is hope. It is possible to have a successful pregnancy after starting out with a very low progesterone level. My son is proof of that. Good luck to all of you ladies. You are in my thoughts.

Thanks Andi - and Congratulations!

I am 8 weeks pregnant and my progesterone level is 15.2. My doctor said as a precaution she wanted to put me on Prometrium. I am so sick with it. I am considering stop taking it.
