With my first pregnancy I had a small subchorionic that resolved by 11 weeks. My daughter is now 2. However, I wasn't so lucky this time. I had a very large one that wrapped half way around the uterus. I would hemorrage and clot ma__sively every few days. I was put on bed rest, and unfortunately I still lost the baby at 11 weeks. It is very scary, and my heart goes out to all who are going through this.

hi everyone. i wrote in a few times before. i was diagnosed at 12 wks with a sch and partial abruption. i am now 23 wks and baby boy seems to be doing just fine. had to have an amnio because the bleeding threw off the afp blood screening and they thought that he might have down syndrome. but the test results came back that we have a very normal healthy baby boy. that was a relief. like the rest of you i have had very irregular bleeding but only the first day was bright red and very heavy flow all the other times have been just spotting dark brown blood. i have delivered 3 very normal babies with no complications at all in my pregnancies. and have had 3 miscarriages very early in. but this is for me the most complicated, scariest pregnancy. i was put on bed rest for a few days but then just no heavy lifting or cleaning. basically just take it easy. but my specialist and my ob are very optimistic that every thing will be just fine. but everytime i spot or i go several hours without feeling him move i get terrified all over again. there is still always a big chance that the rest of my placenta will pull away or it wont move off of my cervix. but i feel this is in gods hands now and if he wants us to have this baby well then we will. only he has all the answers. but we can stay strong and lean on each other. and as hard as it is try not to get too stressed out. my perinatologist says that is the very worst thing possible that we can do to our baby. keep yourselves occupied and focus and the good. dont stress over not getting any answers. because the doctors still dont know what causes this or the best course of action to take to stop it. no matter how smart or long they have been in practice. its a mystery that may never be unraveled. but to ease our suffering (thank god for this site ) we can share our stories and see that we are not alone in our most stressful and troublesome time. there is hope ladies. and i have found that getting my husband to talk with me and share our fears with each other is the biggest eas____nt of all. lean on your men ladies. once my husband opened up to me and we shared our fears most of mine and his went away. just knowing he was there for me and understood and was going thru the same as me. other than that the only advice i have is be calm dont over exert yourself , take it easy and open up and share your fears. good luck to everyone.

Hi Ladies,
Back again with an update. I am 10.2 weeks. I go to the perinatologist in 8 days. I can't wait. It has been over 2 weeks since my last visit to my family doctor and since my last big bleed. I have been spotting brown when I wipe for over 2 weeks solid. Question for all of you wonderful ladies - What is the longest you have spotted for? Right now, it seems that it is regular discharge "tinted brown". Has anyone had that? I don't know why I think this but if I can just get to my peri appt I will be fine, the baby will be fine. I just need to know what is going on. All I know is that I have a hematoma. I don't know where it is or how large it is - nothing. It is driving me nuts. Hang in there ladies - a big hug to all of you.

For Donna:
Hi, I have had spotting for a whole month now!! It began by being brown, then dark brown, had 1 night of bright red blood (went to the ER and they discovered the hematoma) and then eased off to watery pink discharge. I also had another episode of bright red after a bowel movement which stopped immediately (Re said a tiny clot burst). Over the last 2 days howevery I have had hardly any spotting at all, very watery slightly beige colour. They say the hematoma has reabsorbed so I guess it is just the end draining out.
I had a friend who bled all the way through to her sixth month and delivered a healthy baby boy who is now ! If you need a__surance ask for a scan, that is a long time to wait and ease your mind, thankfully I got to have 3 in 3 weeks and it made all the difference to my worrying and stress.
I also got to hear my baby's heartbeat for the first time yesterday on the doppler-so wonderful.

Hey Shaz - I am so happy that everything is working out for you so far. Your pattern is very similar to mine - over the last week it went watery slightly beige like yours and now it is more mucous like with a slight beige tint. Did you get the mucous with the beige tint too? I find in the morning after lying down all night it is darker beige but as the day goes on it fades to the point where I have no spotting when I wipe. I really hope this means my hematoma is correcting itself too. That is so exciting that you got to hear the heartbeat on the doppler. I only have 7 days left till I go see the peri and get the full ultra-sound scan. I am a little scared to try the doppler until I know for sure that the baby is ok via the ultra-sound. I found out that I lost my daughter at 30 weeks with the doppler couldn't pick up the heartbeat. Needless to say, it is too stressful for me at this time. I really would like to thank you and all the other ladies that have taken the time to respond. I am so freaked out about losing this baby too and your support and answers/questions have really helped. One more question - do any of you have mild cramping? Just recently I started to notice very mild cramping - it could be because I am looking for it but my uterus feels really "heavy". I think I remember feeling this way with my daughter but I can't be sure. Thanks again, Donna C - 10 weeks 3 days - only 7 more days until I see the peri!

Hi ladies, I found the following on a radiology site regarding bleeding in early pregnancy. I thought some of you may find these stats interesting:
Section 7: Bleeding in Early Pregnancy - Threatened Abortion
Threatened Abortion: Bleeding in the First Trimester.
Vaginal bleeding occurs during the first 20 weeks in nearly 25% of clinical pregnancies. Since almost half of these pregnancies will be lost, it is a source of great concern, and a major indication for ultrasound examination.
Incomplete Spontaneous Abortion (Embryo Dead):
In many cases, the embryo will have already died, persistent chorionic function maintains a positive HCG a__say. Expulsion of the sac is often delayed several days, though it may be seen to slowly migrate from the initial fundal location toward the uterine cervix.
The Living Embryo and threatened abortion:
The presence of an embryonic heartbeat is highly rea__suring. When visualized by Low Resolution Abdominal sonography, more than 90% of pregnancies continue. Visualization by high resolution v____al sonography is a__sociated with a 70% continuance rate. The apparent discrepancy is because the heartbeat is a stronger positive sign in the larger more advanced embryos seen by transabdominal scanning.
The rate of pregnancy loss with positive heartbeat varies with gestational age and the presence of v____al bleeding:
-Heartbeat at < 6 week., With bleeding 33% are lost, 16% are lost if no bleeding present
-Heartbeat at 7-9 week., With bleeding 10% are lost, 5 % are lost without bleeding present
-Heartbeat at 9-11 week., With bleeding 4 % are lost, 1-2% are lost without bleeding present.
The prognosis for the living embryo improves as gestation proceeds.
a__sociated Findings in threatened Abortion:
Subchorionic Bleeding :
Often visible as endometrial fluid surrounding the external (Decidua Capsularis) aspect of the gestational sac. As long as the placental (Decidua Vera) interface of the gestational sac and decidua remain intact, the pregnancy often continues.
From the standpoint of Hemorrhage volume (Estimated from formula Length (cm) X Height (cm) X Depth (cm) X 0.52 = Volume ml), less then 75-200 ml. is often a__sociated with continued development.
Slow Heartbeat:
Embryonic heart rate < 85 BPM is a negative prognostic sign, but is less reliable in small embryos.
Small Sac:
When the mean sac diameter (MSD) exceeds Crown Rump Length (CRL) by less then 5 mm., loss rate is 80%, however this "small sac" sign occurs only 2% of the time.
Conclusions:
When Yolk Sac in small sac is seen (< 13 mm.), and particularly when heartbeat is seen in larger sacs, expectant management will identify a substantial majority of successful pregnancies, even in the face of v____al bleeding.

Donna: My discharge continues to be watery and I find after lying down all night I have none all day but get some v v light pink sometimes in the afternoon - usually when I am feeling exhausted because I haven't had a lie down all day! Also, sometimes I think it is because I haven't drunk enough water - but I usually get a headache to let me know to lie down and drink a couple of bottles full.
Yes, I do get the "heavy" feeling down by my panty-line area, it comes and goes - I thought it was the hematoma but maybe just part of being pregnant?
I have to odd little "diggy" pain sometimes also but I'm guessing it must be my uterus stretching because it stops shortly after it begins!
I'm so, so sorry to hear that you lost your baby at 30 weeks, that is uncomprehendable to me. This is my first baby after 8 years of trying and 2 IVF's! It is very, very scaring to have this bleeding but must be even moreso for you after suffering such a terrible losss.
I think your spotting sounds like it is clearing up also. Everything will be fine with your scan, please check in and let us know afterwards! I now have 7 whole weeks to wait until my next one!!

Hi Anita, Thanks for you best wishes. The baby is doing fine per the ultrasound, quite active (8 wks)! The hematoma is 5.9cm, but they think it's resolving - hopefully that's the case. I did ask my doctor if it made sense for me to be taking progesterone ONLY because so many people on this site mentioned taking it. Her response was, "you're not already on it?" and she prescribed it. So thanks everyone for sharing all your info.!

I just found this site and I am thrilled to be able to communicate with others who I have gone through this. This is my third pregnancy. The first ended in miscarriage at 11 weeks. The second resulted in a beautiful baby boy who is 2 and 1/2. I was diagnosed with a hematoma on the 18th of July at just about 12 weeks. I was given no restrictions at the time. However, the next evening I began bleeding heavily, to the point that blood covered the floor below my desk. I lost consciousness and was rushed to the emergency room. The baby was fine with a strong heartbeat, but I was sent to bed until a follow up one week later. My pregnancy with my son began the same way and I bleed off and on for nearly four months. No cause was ever determined although there were numerous sonograms. My son was born healthy and without incident. Upon my follow up on Tuesday - they found the hematoma was twice the size of what was found just last week. I have been put to bed again until at least August 9th when I return to the doctor. I am now bleeding a brownish color and do encounter some mild cramping. My doctor has been very honest with me that bed rest cannot be guarenteed to help anything but it is the best course of action at this point given my prior history. I have another follow up next week and everyone's input on this site has given me a great deal of information to inquire of my provider.. Thank you so much. Trish x 14
+2.

Hi everyone. I didn't have a chance to post last week. I went for my f/up ultra sound last week and found that I still have a large hematoma. (I'm not sure the exact size). I also found out that I'm expecting twins!! Both babies had a good heart beat but I was really concerned because the hematoma was as big or bigger than both of the egg sacs. I'm still bleeding brown and I also have some mild cramping. I'm scared to death, especially since I found out there are 2 babies. I go back next wk for another ultrasound and I will be about 9 wks. Does anyone know of any other web sites which discuss hematomas?? I've found some info but most of it is just about 1st trimester bleeding. Love and prayers. Sue

Hello Ladies - Just checking in after a long weekend here in Toronto. I am happy to report that I have had no spotting - no nothing for 5 days now. I keep thinking that it is the calm before the storm. Last time I had no spotting for 1 week only to get up at 4 am in the morning bleeding heavily. I go for my 1st peri appointment on Thursday (August 4th). I am really hoping that everything is ok and that the hematoma has gone away or looks like it is going away. I am so scared of finding out that something bad has happened to the baby given my past history (lost our daughter Elizabeth at 29.6 weeks due to a cord accident). I am now 11.1 weeks. I wish I could find comfort in pa__sing the 12 week point but I don't think I will rest easy on this one. I hope you are all keeping well. Shaz and Kathryn if you are out there, let me know how you are both doing ok? Where are you at now Shaz? Kathryn, I haven't seen any postings from you in some time. Let me know how things are going. I will let you all know how it goes for me on Thursday. Take care, praying for all of us.

Hi Donna, I'm here!
I had my last scan at 11 weeks 1 day and then heard my babys heartbeat last week with the specialist. I don't go for another scan until 18 weeks - seems like forever, but I have another RE appt. in 3 weeks so will be rea__suring to hear babys heartbeat again then. Try to relax (I know it's soooo hard) and take 1 day at a time. This is day 4 for me with no spotting - they did say at the last scan that the hematoma had resolved but I kept spotting. Anyway, I am really happy it has stopped, I think it has "bled out" so you be happy too - your baby will be fine!!! Keep in touch with updates please!
Shaz

Can i join in? I was also diagnosed with this but unfortunately miscarried when i was 6w5d last July 3. The hematoma was much bigger than the sac thats why i pa__sed it all and have a d & c to clean it up. We're ttc again but scared that the hematoma might come back. Is there any possibility to recurr a hematoma when you had a history on it?
