Subchorionic Hematoma

I have a question. I'm trying to determine if I’m going to go straight to an amnio (I’m +35) or do the preliminary blood testing (our hospital call is ADH) for chromosome problems. Does anyone have any insight into whether or not a hematoma would impact the blood test results (I've heard differing opinions). Thanks (I'm 12 wks, last bleeding at 7, "appears" to be resolving).

Kathryn - It is so exciting to hear that you are having a baby boy and that the baby is doing well! Congradulations. I really hope the hematoma is on it's way to being gone! I am 13 weeks today. I have had no bleeding/spotting now for almost 3 weeks. I really think I might be done with it. I see the peri again on the 30th of August. We are hoping to find out the s_x but it still might be a little too soon. I will just be happy if the baby is ok. Take care ladies - love and prayers to all of you.

Hi Everyone - I was diagnosed with a sch last week at 8wks. My dr. said its tiny, but its seems to be bleeding so much! It just started the day before it was diagnosed. Mostly when I get up at night, so I a__sume its the blood that's gathered while I sleep. How long do they usually take to clot over to brown blood? My dr. would like me on bedrest, but its impossible with my 14 mo daughter, although I've been resting and taking it easy as much as possible. I love this board - I read it every night when I wake up with bleeding and need comfort! I wish everyone well....

Theresa- I too, have the same thing. It makes me a nervous wreck. I am 10 1/2 wks and I wake up with clots and bleeding also. The bleeding has been getting much better then when I was first diagnosed with it (at least I'm not filling the toilet as much with blood but clots are still there.) I go into the doctor's every week to two weeks to get checked and tell them everytime that I had a m/c and they send me in for an ultrasound and my little person is in there jumping all around with a strong heartbeat. It is unbelieveable to me because I have had three perfect pregnancies and have never gone through this. I know this has to be God's awesome grace that I don't deserve. I hope I'll still have my sanity by the time I give birth though. I'm on bed rest this week. I have a small daycare in my home that keeps me busy also. I'm hoping this thing will heal this week but I have had this bleeding since 5 1/2 wks. I'll be praying for you and your little blessing. God Bless!

Kathryn, Sabrina, and Justine, thank you very much for your comments and support - it really is comforting. Quick update - checkup this morning showed baby is a week farther than they thought - measuring 11w5d - and doing well. SCH is unchanged. Have had very little spotting for a week now. Dt. says I need to stay on the Prometrium til at least 14 weeks. Anne, he asked me how I felt about testing for chromosome problems (I'm 41) and I explained my concerns about the risks a__sociated with amnio. He told me that they're getting much better at non-invasive screening and asked if I'd want to go to a high-risk specialist and have ultrasound screening where they look at things like tissue density and nasal bone size, etc. I said sure. So maybe this would be an option to consider if you're not keen on the amnio testing? Blessings to all, Paula

Yes, I have a subchorionic hematoma. I had heavy bleeding at 6.5 weeks, lasted just 2 days and turned to brown spotting. Went for ultrasound that day. Baby was fine. I had a followup ultrasound at 8 wks and also at 9wks (when hematoma was found, large and unchanged from wk to wk. Which I took as good news because I've heard they can grow. I am now 11 wks and have had no bleeding or spotting for over a week. I was told to take it easy. I have been but today I took a 3 mile walk with by two toddlers. To me that was more of a destresser than staying home trying to relax with a 2 and 4 year old. I actually felt good. Has anyone been told they can resume their exercise program if the bleeding has stopped. I don't want to sound like exercise to me is more important than my baby. It is a big part of my life and it keeps any stress down to a minimum. I was able to run up till the last month of my previous pregnancies so right now I am going a little nuts!!!!! Any feedback? Thank you.

Yes with my 3rd pregnancy. Now 33 weeks along. Hematoma is down to 4cm from 7.5cm and no longer over my cervix. Never had one of these before so not sure whats going to happen.Had bleeding at 12, 14 and 16 weeks when I was admitted into hosp for 4 days tobe monitored and rest. Have had regular scans since then to monitor babys growth and clot size. Bleeding stopped about 2 months ago.

I went into the ER with lower abdomen pain and upon doing the u/s found a pocket of blood 20mmx10mmx9mm. I am 9 weeks along and this is our first baby. I have a follow -up u/s in a few days and I was told not to worry. I havent experienced any bleeding like many of the other women and I have not been put on bed rest. I have been taking it easy and keeping my feet propped up at work and taking the elevator for my own peace of mind. Our little "bean" looks great saw the yolk sack, hb at 170-180 bpm, and a little spot where the brain is forming! Thank goodness for this website- I was not finding anything about subchorionic hematomas in the books I have.

Help! I wrote about my hematoma earlier. I've been spotting disgusting brown blood now for 2 weeks, every day. Although I know it is a good thing that old blood comes out, I'm worried. The last 2 days the blood has had a terrible smell. How can you know that there isn't some sort of infection in the uterus? Can the old blood somehow get infected there if it stays there long enough? Doctors told me to only come back if I get heavy bleading again so I can't very well ask them about this. Sooo worried.

Kathryn - August 17

Johanna, I certainly don't want to worry you as I promise this sotry that I will tell you is not common but I think you should go back to your doctor because a friend of mine lost her baby to a SCH at 18 weeks because the uterus became infected by the blood clot. The first she knew of an infection was when her waters went. Better to be safe than sorry but I promise you my friend was very unlucky and this is rare but don't risk it. Even if they can give you antibiotics as a precaution? Kathryn x

Justine - August 17

Johanna - You should see your doctor again or at least phone them. The blood should only smell like blood - like your period would. You may have an infection - they are very common in pregnancy esp. v____al infections and urine infections. The doctor can test you to see what you have and prescribe what you may need. Most infections are treated by antibiotics. You shouldn't worry about bothering the doctors - it's what they are paid for. Its always best to go to the doctors with anything you are worried about. You'll be fine but you do need to get any infection treated asap as untreated they can lead to complications.

i go tomarrow to see how bad it is.I'm scared this will be my 4th ultrasound and I'm almost 9 weeks.Hopefully it's good news.i won't beable to handle it if something goes wrong.Wish me luck.

This is actually an answer to Anne's question re: blood screening. My doctor informed me that with the hematoma, the results to the tetra screen could result in a higher percentage of false positives for the asp portion (spina bifida) of the test. I'm 14.5 weeks along with a SCH diagnosed at 11.5 weeks and am wrestling with the idea of doing the screening anymore. I'm 34 and was planning to do the screen but no amnio. By the way, this board has been very helpful. Information from my doctor and the internet have been scant. I go in today for a check up and may ask to see a perinatologist based on some of your recommendations. Good luck everyone!

Sabrina - August 18

Hi Johanna! I don't know if anyone actually reads all these answers way back or not, but I first wrote in on June 13th. I was freaking out and very scared. I appriciate all of you that have been consistant in writing and sharing your journey. Time really has pa__sed quickly. Anyway, I too, spotted brown for over three weeks and at one point it had an awful smell to it. Justine suggested an infection and I "bothered" my Doc yet again and did have one and was put on atibiotics. It was gone in 10 days but the smell was gone almost overnight. This sight gave me the chance to ask questions and get suggestions which eventually has lead to many answers from my Doc. I am so glad to have you all here!! We can make it together!!!! Thank you all!!!

Johanna - August 19

Kathryn, Justine & Sabrina: Thank you for your advice! I saw a doctor and got antibiotics in case it is an infection. U/S showed that baby was fine (weeks 15+). Unluckily there are now 2 hematomas, one is bigger and one is smaller. Also the placenta looked unusual, it seems to have bled and perhaps even "detached" (don't knew the correct word in english...) a little during my earlier episodes. But it's not bleeding now and that's a good thing. This is indeed the best site ever! I hope eveyone here makes it allright till the end!

Kathryn - August 19

Johanna - so pleases, it's best to get the antibiotics just for a piece of mind eh. Sooo glad baby is measuring good and as for having two hemetoma's me too at one point! I did bleed one out though and am now 21+4 anmd baby doing fine so try not to worry. Take care, Kathryn x
