Thank you to everyone for writing and being so supportive. In response to Amy, I actually miscarried during week 11 but I am not sure what the gestational age was. I have not talked to my doctor after the D&C but am eager to find out if he can tell me anything about the cause of the miscarriage. There was a confirmed heatbeat on two occasions prior to the news that a miscarriage was inevitable. My husband and I are going to wait at least three cycles until we try again. I know in my heart a baby will happen for us but I just wish it had happened this time. It is uplifting to hear stories of those who have gotten pregnant after a miscarriage (or two). My thoughts are with everyone else who is having a difficult pregnancy or who has also experienced loss.

Hi Girls, I live in the UK and at 5+5 weeks I started to spot brown tehn red blood. I had my hCG levels monitored. They had not risen very much. I then was sent for an internal scan and everything was fine and a HB was detected. What they discoverd was a SCH. It was small and I was told that I may have a bleed but it would most probably be reabsorbed.. I had some spotting for about 5 days after and then it stopped. However, yesterday I was resting on teh sofa and went to have a shower. When I took off my underwear, tehre was lots of fresh red blood. I panicked. I phoned the Early Pregnancy Unit at our local hospital. They said as it was a Saturday, I couldn't get a scan till Monday. In teh meantime keep an eye on teh bleeding. Unfortunately, it got quite heavy. I had to wear a sanitary towel. There were small clots. I rested and when I got up early this morning the bleeding was lighter. I breathed a sigh of relief. However, in last hour it has gotten heavy again. I am now 7 weeks pregnant. Do you think the bleeding is a result of the clot, or do you think I am miscarrying? Tomorrow is a long time to wait for a scan. I am so scared. Any advice welcome.

I'm sorry you are going through this. It is definitely rough. I think a lot of us have had similar experiences with very heavy bleeding early on and have been surprised to find a heartbeat during a scan. I know bedrest is not prescribed in the UK but I would suggest laying down, drinking lots of water, and trying to keep positive while you're waiting for the scan. If you bleed so much that it is pouring down your legs to the floor go to an emergency hospital as that can be life threatening. Please hand in there and let us know how it goes. Amy

Hi everyone, I was diagnosed with a subchorionic hematoma at 5 weeks and bled ma__sively, with clots, till i got to 12 weeks. During this time, i thought i had a miscarriage because i had severe cramps and also the HCG level started going down. I was sent to hospital because they were going to do a D&C, but then thought they should do an ultrasound to check..........and there was a heart beat. Anyway, i was in hospital throughout the pregnancy, at 26 weeks (threatened premature labour), and then at 31 weeks. I finally delivered at 39 weeks. Unfortulately, the baby was small and was growing very slowly after the first bleed. The baby also was born with a totally blocked aorta (coarctation) and 2 holes in his heart, as well as hypospadias. I have a feeling this was all due to hematoma at 5 weeks, and the fact that the hormone level dropped. I think my body told itself it was having a miscarriage and the development stopped for a bit, resulting in the heart problems etc. I was induced because my water broke and then had to have an emergency c section after 8 hours of labour because i lost so much blood. Found out later that i had a placental abruption, and i think that was causing my bleeding throughout the pregnancy and the baby to grow slowly. Even though i had so many ultrasounds during the pregnancy, no one picked up an abruption, i think because it was probably not the edges of the placenta that had torn away, but the middle. I want to have more children but am worried that this will happen again, especially having all the heart problems. Does anyone else think the heart probs could have been from the HCG level dropping in the pregnancy? Also, do you think that the placenta just never attached properly over the hematoma in the beginning, so i already had an abruption from 5 weeks? Also, do you have a higher chance of having a hematoma again in other pregnancies or is it random? In my opinion the hematoma caused so many problems for me, heart problems for my baby, poor feeding as a result. My baby still has a NG tube for feeding, because he never fed straight after he was born, because he had his first heart operation on day 1.

Hello everyone I am 13wks + and from week eleven I have been spotting brown, red, dark brown and back to brown. I felt really anxious and thought I would end up having a miscarriage. The first scan showed the baby was fine and the correct size for dates and I felt elated. The spotting seemed to fade away but kept recurring every couple of days then over the last weekend I had a big gush of dark brown old blood when I went to the bathroom after lying down. I got a shock and after much heavier spotting I returned for another scan and yet again the baby looked fine( thank God)! My cervix is completely closed and the placenta looked good and intact as well, but there was a pocket of blood maybe a hematoma in the uterus and this is what seems to be leaking out of the v____a. They don't seem to think it is affecting my baby in any way. They said it could be reabsorbed or it is in a position where he blood has a good exit. I am so fed up of this trickling sensation and the anxiety that accompanies every bathroom visit not to mention having to wear a sanitary towel. The bleeding is currently heavier than I've been used to and I feel like it will continue for the rest of my pregnancy. My blood loss is at it's worst if I have been resting then get on the move again so I don't bother any more. My scan was very rea__suring but I still would love for this problem to leave me. I'm supposed to be going on holiday on Monday with my older two sons (had no problems having them) I just know this problem will ruin everything. I don't want to let it rule my life but it does! Thanks for this forum I now know I'm not alone and good luck to you all! X

hi all, i'm 12wks and have had four bleeds so far.I have had a scan after each bleed and the baby was still ok.At my last scan the hematoma was bigger than last time and all i was told was to wait and see what happens.Well i found this hard b\c i had a m\c three months ago,and am still dealing with that.I have a four year old daughter.I hate wondering everyday what is happening inside my body.I haven't been told about any drug that can be used, also i live in australia.Does the chance of it affecting the babies life decrease with the further along you get? Thanks,my prayers are with all our babies.

Since my last input I've spent a night on the Gyny ward after having a ma__sive bleed I suppose a haemorrhage is a better description lasting a good few hours. I thought that was the end of my pregnancy and was so scared and upset. The bleeding calmed down from the next morning to the amount similar to a menstrual bleed. I went for an ultrasound and in the space 2 days since my previous ultrasound I had developed another bleeding sight on the other side of my placenta. But amazingly my baby is still alive and kicking. I have been advised to quit my job as a mobile hairdresser because of the long periods standing and generally take it easy. I'm still bleeding but I'm happy that it's calmed down. I couldn't believe my good luck that the baby was still in there as they had prepared me for the worst. There are no guarantees that it won't happen again and I will have to go for more check ups to monitor the situation. The blood sights are on either sides of the placenta and the only concern is that the bleeding in the uterus could travel around the back of the placenta and then it could become detached and that would be disaster but hopefully with more rest all will be well. I have a supportive partner and my two sons aged 15 and 10 are so looking forward to our new addition that they can be reminded to stop stressing me out like they sometimes do. I feel like stress can play a big part at times like this. This forum is a good help to me thank you all! X p.s never give up hope!

I there, I thought i'd just ask if anyone had there subchorionic bleed a__sociated with placenta abruption? If they found out early on i mean. I had my first bleed at 5w, then 8w, 11w, 13w, and then i was induced at 18w (baby stopped growing at 14w because of the placenta coming away from the uterus). I'll have to wait a few weeks to find out if the sub-bleeding was due to placenta abruption, or that sub-bleeding caused placenta abruption. My ob said that i have a rare case, and that it wont happen again. Im 21, and have had a m/c already. Next time will be better, i know it!

I am sorry to say that I lost my baby at 14wks. I can't believe it's been one week tonight! I began having colicky cramps over the previous weekend. I thought it might be a water infection (wishfull thinking). I went to ante natal on Monday morning to hand in a water sample but I explained to the midwife about the cramps. She arranged a U.S and it showed no movement or heartbeat. With medical management I Miscarried my baby. It was a tiny boy. I was told earlier that it is possible with careful monitoring to have a safe and sound delivery. The roller coaster ride is over and I just feel unlucky! x

Here's a note of encouragement to everyone. I was dx with sub hem at 14 weeks after a bleeding episode. I am 38 y/o; this was my 2nd preg. First baby I miscarried 07/05. Throughout the duration of my pregnancy I had complications with the placenta. Partial abruption, mild cord damage, with 2 LARGE blood clots on both sides of the placenta. The perinatologist felt I would not make it past week 22 because of a likelihood of complete abruption, preeclampia or growth restriction of the baby. This pregnancy really tested my faith. From 16 weeks I bled again and stayed on restricted bedrest until I reached viability (24 weeks). After that I resumed normal activity however I did exercise pelvic rest. My Pastor, church and family continued to pray for this pregnancy to at least make it to 6 mths. After I reached 28 weeks I breathed a little easier...28 turned to 30, 30 turned to 32 and then I bled again with premature labor. I was given terbutaline from week 32 until week 35 and delivered a healthy baby boy at 7 lbs 14 oz August 1, 2006 via c section week 38. My OBS stated my placenta was "the worst placenta he has ever seen since practicing medicine." Please pray and take care of yourself. Believe GOD for your baby! I quoted scriptures the entire pregnancy. Blessings to all of YOU!

I'm currently in my 18th week and had a subchorionic bleed in my 10th week. The bleeding has stopped now since about 10 days or so. I'm scheduled for an amnio this week since i'm 39 yrs. old. Has anyone had an amnio with a subchorionic hematoma?

My sister is now entering her 8th month of pregnancy and the physician told her to stay in hospital for the ninth month. She didn't have any bleeding since the 10th week but kept taking the medicine and supress contractions. Could there be any complications from the hematoma during delivery? Any further tips or suggestions?

ive been told that i have a subchorionic bleed and a 7.5cm blood clot in my lower uterine segment. they are unsure as to where the clot is coming from since it is away form the placenta and the clot is so dense they cant see much. im going tomarrow 9/6 for another ultra sound to see what all is going on. i am bleeding but it is dark brown "old" blood. im very worried as to what is going to happen. ive been home on modified bed rest but it does feel somewhat like house arrest :) i just want a healthy baby.

I’m so grateful to have found this forum, but have to say after reading all of the responses, I’m angry about the care I received. I’ve had dark brown spotting at different points throughout my pregnancy, but it stopped around 8 weeks. At 10 weeks I had my first appointment. The midwife who examined me, said I may bleed after the exam because the cervix is very sensitive when you are pregnant. After having a reddish bloody discharge for 8 days and finally pa__sing a quarter-sized clot, I called the doctor about it. I was only told to not have s_x for a week, when according to everyone else’s posts, I should have been put on bedrest at that point. A week later, I spent all day working in the yard, probably 8 hours pulling weeds, which I NOW know I shouldn’t have been doing. I took a shower and was resting on the couch when I felt a gush. Went to the bathroom and saw a ton of blood. I was sitting on the toilet and blood was pouring out of me, along with a bunch of clots. I was sure I was having a miscarriage. I was trying to get dressed to go to the hospital, but just walking from the bathroom to put on a pair of jeans, I had soaked through my pad. In about 10 minutes I went through 5 pads. After pa__sing a fist-sized clot (which I thought was our baby) the bleeding stopped. We finally got to the hospital and were surprised to see our baby in the ultrasound kicking, flipping around, measuring at 13weeks 1day, with heartbeat of 182. We were shocked and ecstatic. I was told I had a “threatened miscarriage” (a blanket term in my opinion) and that the blood was coming from a blood clot that was breaking apart. The term “subchronic hematoma” was never mentioned and I wasn’t told to go on bedrest. We were sent home at 2am even though the bleeding had started up again. Stayed up all night bleeding and cramping. I think now I was having contractions and going through childbirth. The pain and bleeding were getting worse, so we decided to go back to the hospital. Just before we were about to leave, I had the worst pain yet, felt like I was going to pa__s out and needed to throw up, so I ran to the bathroom. Just then, I felt that something big was going to pa__s and the baby came out in the toilet. My hubby pa__sed out after seeing the baby. I revived him and took our fully intact little baby out of the toilet and I’m pretty sure I saw boy parts. We’re still waiting on test results, but the diagnosis is still “threatened miscarriage” which is bs. I can’t help but feel that if I had been on bedrest, our baby would still be alive.
