I was just wondering what the hormonal birth control options are for br___tfeeding women. I don't mind using a diaphragm but my husband and I hate condoms and I don't want to use them. I have heard there is a pill you can take that is similar to birth control pills but will not interfere with the milk supply?Any recommendations?

If you are not planning on having any more children soon I recommend an IUD, very little hormones (Mirena) or no hormones (Paragaurd) and it safe to b___stfeed with them in.

I take the mini pill and haven't gained any weight from it. No other side effects either. Only downside (for me at least) is having to take it at the exact same time every day..

I love love LOVE my IUD. I have the Mirena. The worst part about the mini-pill is that you MUST take it at exactly the same time, every day. I can't imagine trying to do that with a newborn. Works well for some though. Good luck finding something! ~spam

The hormone in the Mirena IUD can be pa__sed onto baby through b___stmilk. I'm not sure of what the total effects of this are though. I'm just going to use condoms unitl I'm done BF'ing at 6 months and then take a low dose pill.

Crystal -- Actually, the Mirena IUD is one of the safest forms of BC to use while b___stfeeding. The hormone dosage is VERY low. It's really not much different than taking the mini-pill or any drug at all, for that matter. I've been b___stfeeding for 10 months now and still going strong. I can't imagine using condoms this long, lol. I also am terrible at taking a pill the same time every day, and there's NO way I'd be able to with an infant. My doctor told me that the Mirena was the least likely to interfere with b___stfeeding in any way. ~spam

Hey *Spamanda*, that there Mirena IUD does it stop your period or what? B.c. my doc said yes and then I read the pamphlet and it said it only stops it in rare occasions???... I b___stfed my daughter for 16 months before I got pregnant (then fed for 2 more months) and I am b___stfeeding my 6 week old and really don't want to risk getting pregnant w/ baby #2 just yet lol...[even though I did well using b-feeding as birth control the first time.] and obviously don't want to take the pill! Yuck! So let me know!!! Thanks..

Emsmom -- Well, I did have some spotting for a few months when I first got my IUD. It was nothing major, not enough to need a real tampon, and not every day, but enough that I made sure to use pantiliners. Now I don't have any spotting. However, I AM still b___stfeeding (DS is 10 months) and for the year and a half I was trying to get preggers, I was very irregular, so.... your mileage may vary, lol. I think a lot of women end up having _slight_ bleeding when they would normally have their period, but not like a normal one. Like I said, I'm a BIG fan. ~spam
